Dr. Seuss' 2nd book to feature Horton the Elephant (after Horton Hatches the Egg in 1940), intended to book to be an allegory about the treatment of the Japanese after WWII (Geisel/Seuss had been strongly anti-Japanese before and during the war) and emphasize that everyone should be treated equally.

The book was an immediate success, and has gone on to sell more than 8 million copies, making it the 4th best-selling hardcover children’s book in English.
