The sun had started to set and the fall chill followed. Closing the door behind me, I immediately started to block the door of the room just for reassurance with the first thing I saw which was a lounge chair. My dog companion, a German shepherd that I named Orion. I came across him a few months into the apocalypse. He went ahead of me to search behind any spaces that something or someone could be hiding behind. Finding nothing, Orion soon came back to my side which signaled me that the area was safe. Now knowing I wasn’t in any imminent danger I relaxed slightly and placed my bag and weapon down on the floor near the door. I then searched the room for supplies or anything useful. While I searched the long need for sleep seeped in and caught up to me. Finding some clean rags and spare bed sheets, I proceeded to make a makeshift bed in the bathtub out of the sheets that i found, not wanting to sleep on the bed. I proceed to go over to where my bag resided and stuffed the rags in my backpack and in that process i moved my backpack into the bathroom and setting it down, Orion following me to where we would be sleeping for the night. Pulling out the blanket that I had found a while back that I stored in her bag, I proceeded to climb into the tub and got comfortable, covering myself with the blanket. Orion proceeded to lay down in between the bathtub and the door to the main room, curling up to sleep. I then reached out to give the dog a quick pet and I muttered “…Night Orion..” and closed my eyes and fell into a not so dreamless sleep.
I shot up in cold sweat ,breathing heavy from a nightmare I couldn’t quite remember. I only started to calm down when Orion nudged me with his snout, bringing me back down to earth. After taking a minute to calm down I thankfully gave Olive some pets as hunger ached my stomach and grabbed my pack and searched it for the food she had stored in there. Pulling out a wet dog food can for Orion and a pack of sandwich crackers myself. Searching my pockets for my pocket knife, finding it and not a second after cracking open the dog food can and sat it on the ground, not wanting to waste daylight I start to pack up my belongings while eating the crackers i pulled out. After Orion and I got done eating I pushed the chair out from blocking the door and readied my weapon, which was a crowbar. Putting an ear up to the door and hearing nothing I creak open the door and step out, Orion following close behind. After double checking that the coast was clear I started to speed walk to the entrance that she used to get inside. While going down the hallways I had only encountered a couple of zombies which I took care of with my crowbar, making sure to aim for the head and smashing them in. I had one close call when a zombie tried to creep up from behind which Orion had my back, lunging at the zombie and biting down on its skull, killing it. Soon making it back to the entrance, I creak the door open and peek out. I could only see a small group of zombies within my field of vision, but they were much too distracted with feasting on something. I wanted to hurry up and search the remaining buildings and get it over with so I could get back to my semi-permanent base that resided in a small housing area that was quite a distance away. Not wanting to catch the attention of the zombies in case they decided they were done with whatever they were eating I hurriedly snuck past them with Orion following behind. Unfortunately my foot nudged a stray soda ,alerting one of the zombies to my location. Before the other zombies could catch on I took care of the zombie, smashing their brains in and hurrying off to the closest building which was a small store. Speed walking over to the building and watching where I was walking, I cautiously opened up the doors and closed it after Orion entered. Keeping my guard up I started to search the store while Orion guarded me. I found a surprising amount of stuff on the shelves and in the singular clothing rack that I rummaged through. I ended up finding a couple of shirts, a hoodie, a couple of snack sized chip bags, a pack of AA batteries, and a box of saltines. I hurriedly stuffed the newly acquired items into my bag and made my way to the back part of the store. As I turned the doorknob I was met with resistance from the door being locked. ”..Dammit,” I muttered to myself. I Jiggled the doorknob once more, I sighed, looking around the store and trying to think of a solution. I realized i can probably kick the door if i tried. Before I could do anything I was interrupted by a loud gunshot. I hurried over to the front of the store and peeked out the dirty window. Due to the restricted sight out the window I could only see zombies converging to where the gunshot came from. Standing back up and hurrying over to the door, more gunshots were fired. I hurried out of the door, Orion following close behind me as an accented voice yelped out “SHIT!” along with a single gunshot. Sensing the impending doom I hurried to the source of the noise, which was a rather tall man in an alleyway surrounded by a decently sized group of zombies. He was noticeably struggling a bit to keep them at bay. Jumping into action , I smacked my crowbar on a knocked over trash can to draw some of the zombies over to me with the noise I was making. Luckily some of the zombies decided that I was an easier snack and started to shamble over to me but the rest of them were cornering the man. My crowbar at the ready, I swung at the skulls of the zombies that were too close for comfort. Orion, deciding to help thin out the zombies around the man. He lunged at the zombies, biting and crushing their skulls. The stranger soon started to gain control and helped kill the zombies. Soon the group of zombies were cleared, as I did the finishing blow to the last zombie. Wiping the sweat and grime off my face, I turned my attention to the stranger whose attention was currently on Orion giving the dog pets and cooing. I cleared my throat to get the attention of the man. He jumps slightly and turns his attention over to me.” We need to get moving, because I guarantee with all the shooting you were doing more zombies are gonna be converging on us at any second” I say with urgency. I whistled for Orion to return to my side and signaled for the stranger to follow me. He just sat there still crouched, not making a move to follow. “I would think after what just happened ,you wouldn’t want to be surrounded by zombies a second time but be my guest, “I mention. ”I won’t help you a second time. I started jogging in the direction of my base and in the corner of my vision I saw the man scramble to stand and jogged to catch up with me and Orion.
