Due to trauma and mental illness, I have done some pretty terrible wacky shit, and I am making active efforts to try and better myself and stop using it as an excuse for being a dickass.

I made this blog to just goof off and have a safe space for myself and others.

saw a twitter post about how a non-binary person was bothered by people sayin’ “they is” instead of “they are” and it’s definitely a reason why i created this blog and the blacknbculture blog. no matter how pro-black or anti-racism a white nigga will be they will always find some way to criticize “ghetto”, “trashy”, or “lazy” ways of speakin’ and bein’.

i cannot speak my dialect around white without havin’ to assimilate unless i want people to mock me or just laugh at everything i say, even if i’m actually mad. other times, i just feel like i come off as rude to white people. in english i see examples of my native dialect be used as a “incorrect examples” of Real English. the reason i write in my dialect is so i don’t lose it bein’ surrounded by so many white people who only tolerate me as long as i throw my culture away. usin’ “is” instead of “are” in African American English (AAE) is the most common feature in the dialect i’d argue it’s part of what make it so distinct, along with the accent as well. i will not be fooled by white people bothered by grammar, cause 99% it’s racism they probably don’t even know of.

Hi, quick clarification for baby leftists.

Privilege is when you lack barriers another person faces due to your identity (or perceived identity!) and social position, and it's often unnoticeable that you're experiencing it until someone points it out.

An example: I have privilege over my POC friends because I am perceived as white. My man friends have privilege over me because I am perceived as a woman. So my Puerto Rican man friend and I have privilege over each other in different ways, him because he doesn't face sexism and misogyny the way I do, and me because I don't face racism the way he does.

Relative Privilege is when one person with the same identity as another experiences discrimination or barriers to a lesser degree than the other.

An example: My friend and I are both Autistic, and we both experience discrimination due to that. Our autism presents differently, and (generally speaking!), I am more disabled by it than he is. Thus, he holds relative privilege over me. He is still discriminated against more than an allistic person is, but he is discriminated against for his autism less than I am for mine. This is relative privilege. This can also be applied more broadly, for example, I hold relative privilege over many disabled people who are not Autistic but are also otherwise disabled, because they experience more barriers than I do.

Also please note that privilege, because it's given or denied from larger social structures, is often more about how people perceive your identities than your actual identities! For example, I am not a woman, but I am perceived as a woman, and thus experience discrimination based on that.

Experiencing privilege is not a morally bad thing, and experiencing discrimination is not a morally high thing. It's easy to fall into the identity olympics, but it's not helpful. Where you have privilege, use it to lift the voices of those who don't. You are essential. Where you don't have privilege, learn your history, find your community, and embrace yourself. You are essential.

today is international nonbinary people’s day and i have yet to see a single post about it on my dashboard so i have decided to be a bit annoying about it and reblog a bunch of stuff because, frankly, i am so sick of nonbinary people being an afterthought, ignored, and erased in the queer community. i hope that today and during this week (nonbinary awareness week, the 13th-20th) you, the person reading this, will take some time to engage in some meaningful allyship of the nonbinary community beyond phrases like “nonbinary people are valid,” especially if you are not nonbinary yourself. tell your nonbinary friends they matter, support nonbinary creators (especially nonbinary creators of colour!), learn how to use a set of neopronouns, read up on nonbinary-specific issues and exorsexism and how they intersect with intersex issues and oppression, learn about nonbinary gender experiences in cultures other than your own, learn about some lesser known terms and labels used by the community, stop misusing our language (transfem and transmasc) to push bioessentialist discourse within the trans community and push back against binary gender/sex division when you see it — there is so much you can do and all of it makes a difference!

nonbinary people are not only valid, but an important and foundational demographic of the queer and trans community, and we deserve to be treated as such. we deserve to be taken seriously. and to my fellow nonbinary people reading this: your existence makes the world a better place. you deserve to have your identity not just tolerated, but appreciated and respected. i love you. please stay alive

TRANS PEOPLE CONSIDERING SURGERY- READ THIS PLEASE GENUINELY I AM BEGGING YOU IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE

If you are getting gender affirming surgery, especially if it’s your first major surgery, PLEASE be aware that you can become SEVERELY depressed afterwards ESPECIALLY if you have a history of depression or suicidal ideation.

Post op depression is a natural reaction to the crazy mix of hormones your body goes through after major surgery as well as the stress and anxiety of recovery. Think of it like an adrenaline crash, but dragged out longer.

For me it kicked in about 6 weeks after top surgery and the worst of it lasted until about 10 weeks post op. EVERYTHING felt IMPOSSIBLE. None of the skills I’d been practicing worked. I thought everything was going to be bad forever. I didn’t attempt, but I was in the hospital. If it wasn’t for my support system I probably would have attempted.

This is not regret, but it can feel like it. I remain happy about my results to this day (going on six years later).

This is not you failing to maintain your mental health, but it can make you feel like a failure.

Things are not hopeless, but through the haze of this depression they can feel hopeless.

It can be terrifyingly sudden or it can sneak up on you. I didn’t even realize what was going on until after the depression finally passed and my mental health went back to normal.

I am writing this post because nobody told me about this before my top surgery. I was caught completely off guard. For my subsequent surgeries being aware has made all the difference. Being able to treat those symptoms as an expected and normal part of the healing journey has made them far easier to deal with. Because even when my emotions go to dark places I *know* they will pass. I have been able to tell the bad thoughts to take a bad seat and focus on healing.

PLEASE have a plan in place for if this happens. I know that this topic is taboo because of how often our mental health is weaponized against us, but I desperately want every single person getting gender affirming surgery to be aware of, and have a plan for post operative depression.
