Please do not interfere with nature!

For the last few years we have received quite a few calls from people that scared a hawk or snake away from what it was eating.

These calls always go something like, “I save a ___ from a hawk that was trying to eat it”, which means these people know what they stopped. These people then want us to save what the hawk was trying to eat. We’ve gotten in anything from a turtle with three legs already removed by the hawk, to small song birds to bunnies and the outcome is almost always the same….death, though more slowly and painfully than it would have been had people not interfered.

I want to remind you all, when a hawk captures its prey, it typically crushes it at least to a point. A snake will do the same. This means that the internal injuries are typically such that nobody could possibly save the animal. The most humane thing would have been to leave hawk or snake to its meal and NOT interfere.

Also, hawks are only successful in about 1 in 10 hunts. Meaning you don’t know how long that hawk or that hawk’s babies have been without food and now will go without food even longer.

Hawks have to eat and feed their young as well. It isn’t really fair for a human to decide what a proper meal may be.

We realize this may not be the most pleasant thing for you to watch, so we suggest you turn away. Chasing them away from a meal only does two things; 1. whatever they were trying to eat will now suffer until it dies, when dying would have been much faster had it been left, and 2. it leaves the hawk without a meal, meaning it is going to now go kill something that it wouldn’t have if the person hadn’t interfered.

Please, respect nature and let her do what she is supposed to do!

Also, skin cancer is quite frequent and a hell of a lot more dangerous than what most people think.

Never underestimate any skin condition: it can be a sign that something else needs attention, be it physical or psychological issues.

Sun bathing is good but with time limit and proper protection! In Europe the suncreams have a law-defined standard, so even the ones sold for 6-7€ at the grocery store are reliable for the level of protection it’s written on the package. E.g., for children and people with very light skin, the level 50 (maximum in the EU scale, very efficient) is basically mandatory. I usually use level 30 or 20, depending on the sun intensity and how much I already have sunbathed in the days before.

If it itches, you should go to the dermatologist. I’m not talking about the occasional slight itch of course, but of a recurring, persistent itch in specific areas which gets worse with time.

Don’t underestimate skin conditions in pets too!! Parasites and metabolic disorders are often cause of skin symptoms.

IT WAS ON THE DESKTOP. THIS IS WHAT I SENT.

Every morning, when she wakes, she sees this post-it stuck onto the stone wall and makes herself read it out loud.

“Stop checking on him,” she says, arms wrapped tight around her knees. “He doesn’t miss you.” The words bring the familiar sting of pain, the familiar tightness in her chest, the accompanying breathlessness. There’s still a part of her that rebels at the thought, that clings to what he said before and not after.

She thinks she might have been happier loving a mortal, which is so in fashion these days that her mother is gallivanting about Earth like she hadn’t spent centuries chastising Persephone for the same. If she loved a mortal, she could bind them in ways that it’s impossible to bind a god.

She gets up and gets ready for her day. Being an immortal means that she can’t just spend all day in bed. That path leads to centuries of apathy and she’s still young. So very, very young.

“Go back to Olympus. I should have known better than to let a child into my kingdom.”

There was no “letting” about it. She’d been younger still and in chains and in captivity and in love. She’d beguiled and coerced so that he’d take her with him, made him free her. 

She’d thought she was shedding her chains, choosing new ones that better suited her, but she didn’t see the way her discarded shackles slipped onto him. She didn’t see what a burden she was, what a burden she would become to him, how limiting, how heavy, how stupid.

It’s been five years now and she’s still counting seasons like she has a chance of being let back in. Summer and winter, summer and winter, summer and winter, ad nauseum. Her mother had said that she’d stick to the cycle, that the Earth actually benefited from winter, but Persephone sees the way the summers are growing longer and hotter, the way the winters are short but so sharp she could cut her teeth on them.

Spring? She stopped that a long time ago. The melting of winter is good enough for mortals and gods alike. They don’t notice and, therefore, they don’t ask.
