Area Man Struggles with Choice Between Basic Morality and Homosexual Desire Toward Worst Person Alive
Featured Article: Crack Van
This week's Featured Article is Crack Van!
Active from 2003 to 2014, Crack Van was a multifandom fanfiction and vid rec community on LiveJournal that became, for a generation of fans, the first stop when exploring a new fandom. At its peak, it was one of the most organised and wide-ranging rec communities the internet had ever seen, with nearly 25,000 recs over ten years.
The community worked by recruiting volunteers from individual fandoms to "drive the van" for a month at a time, posting regular recommendations and writing fandom primers: overviews designed to help total newcomers understand the source material, the characters, the ships, and where to find the good stuff.
Crack Van closed permanently in January 2014, signalling a broader shift in fandom culture, as Tumblr, AO3, and Twitter had changed how fans discovered fanworks and connected with each other, making the curated, collaborative structure of Crack Van feel like a different era entirely. Many fans mourned it as the end of something irreplaceable.
Crack Van also inspired a wave of fandom-specific rec communities in its image, like Crack Impala for Supernatural.
Curious about the community that helped hundreds of thousands of fans find their footing in new fandoms? Head over to Fanlore to learn more!

I started using Head and Shoulders ten years ago for itchy scalp and dandruff, and then for ten years I have not had itchy scalp and dandruff, so I thought βwhy do I still buy shampoo to combat itchy scalp and dandruff when I do not have itchy scalp and dandruff,β so I stopped buying the shampoo for itchy scalp and dandruff and can you guess I have now? Can you predict what currently afflicts me? Itβs alright if you canβt because apparently I fuckin couldnβt either
Cutting something out of your life because you think you donβt need it any more only to realize that it was in fact working as intended and preventing a problem that will return should you stop doing this is a good experiment to run periodically with something small like dandruff shampoo, lest you start to think it would be a good idea to do this with like letβs say public health and the social safety net and vaccines
I had a liver transplant when I was 14 and like six months later I was chatting with my surgeon and he said βthereβs gonna come a time, probably when youβre a teenager, where youβre gonna think, βI feel great, why am I still taking all this medication? I havenβt needed it in years.β and youβre gonna want to stop taking all this medication. Guess whatβs gonna happen then? Youβre gonna go into rejection and your liver is gonna start failing, and youβre gonna be dying again, and weβre gonna have to find you another liver. So donβt do that.β And I said βwhy the fuck would anyone do that?β and he said βpeople are stupid.β
every once in a while when I get annoyed by a pharmacy or donβt wanna get out of bed to do my drugs I think βugh, this is dumb, why do I do this?β and that conversation slams into me like a truck and I remember that I am, in fact, stupid

[ID: Four screencaps from Taskmaster. Alex Horne holds up one bare wrist, where he would normally wear a watch, and says with a frown, "Right, I don't know how long you've got left." Phil Ellis, trying to carry a chair through a doorway, says, "Well, none of us do, don't we? But isn't that life's big question? Part of the fun of it, really." End ID.]

one of my favorite bits in lord of the rings is something the movies didn't really try to do because it's entirely internal, but sam's carrying the ring and it starts trying to do its work on him, so he's having these intrusive visions of himself marching at the head of a vast and terrible army, and he just starts laughing because, me? samwise gamgee? sam gamgee the general sam gamgee the dark lord are you for real? man i just want to go home and do some gardening. and the ring gets frustrated and it starts trying to figure out other stuff that would actually tempt sam and it's finally like, okay, but hear me out: imagine if you could have...A REALLY REALLY BIG GARDEN
and then he's like, i don't know that sounds like a lot more work than a regular garden actually. why don't we just get on with finding mister frodo
