Do you have a first line of a novel that has stuck with you, without the need to look it up, regardless of whether you read/finished the book in question?
Mine is: I blame it all on the Hobbit; that, and my supportive home life. (From Alice, I Think)
Beautiful, no notes. (Found it on Facebook, tracked it back to Reddit)

May all of you find jobs and careers to support yourselves, your families, your pets, and may you never spend a single night dreading going to work the next day. May your jobs be fulfilling, safe, rewarding, prosperous, and healthy for you and your goals.
sorry for the mixed signals I don’t know what I want or what I’m doing mostly

let’s talk about how they made it impossible to function without a phone and digitalised everything and then turned around and went “actually! these phone things aren’t safe for kids but it’s magically ok once you’re eighteen. guess you’ll have to have your life dictated by your parents now lol cause we’re gonna take the devices away from you. IT’S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING”
ok my apologies. take away my ability to buy anything too ig because these fuckass stores don’t accept cash anymore. take away my ability to communicate with people outside my house and school because I can’t text and I can’t email and I cant drive to them either and I can’t even fucking get public transport without a phone either. can’t order at a fucking restaurant without being asked to get a membership and install an app and also very sorry but you can only order through our online menu now! have you ever considered that it’s not just about instagram?
It actually really fucking sucks that the two options for much of the internet now are either "get added to a massive database that makes you easier to identify and therefore target, put self at greater risk of identity theft" or "lose access to accounts and access to large parts of the internet".
From what I understand, the risk isn't that sites will know who you are (as it seems a lot of the time they just recieve the result of identification) but moreso that by going through the verification process you are entered into a database that enables things like facial identification. It's not so much the sites you have to be worried about, it's the cops and military, who the data get sold too.
Like, the blunt fact of the matter is that even if the system is blatantly and transparently fucking evil, if I need to find a job and a LinkedIn account would help with that, I legitimately might just need to submit to it. The threat of unemployment might force me to have to relinquish what tiny slivers of privacy I still have left. I'm definitely not doing it yet, but at a certain point I may not have a choice. How fucked is it that they have the power to coerse you into compliance like that? And all for the sake of an evil corporation. Everything is just evil dogshit now, and the ineffectual protest of someone like me doesn't actually achieve anything. Nobody else seems to actually have the power to challange this at all, the vast majority of people seem to accept it and even support it, they don't care. We appear to be in the minority here...

“Pratchett went back to older throwaway jokes (like dwarves being apparently unisex) and used them as metaphors to discuss social change, racial assimilation, and other complex issues, while reexamining the species he’d thrown in at the margins of his world simply because they existed at the margins of every other fantasy universe. If goblins and orcs and trolls could think, then why were they always just there to be slaughtered by the heroes? And if the heroes slaughtered sentient beings en masse, how heroic exactly were they? It was a long overdue start on redressing issues long swept under the rug by a parade of Tolkien successors who never thought of anyone green and slimy as anything but a notch on the protagonist’s sword, and much of the urgency in Pratchett’s last few books seemed to be related to them. ‘There’s only one true evil in the world,’ he said through his characters. ‘And that’s treating people like they were things.’ And in the last of his ‘grown-up’ Discworld books, that idea is shouted with the ferocity of those who have only a few words left and want to make them count. Goblins are people. Golems are people. Dwarves are people, and they do not become any less people because they decide to go by the gender they know themselves to be instead of the one society forces on them. Even trains might be people, and you’ll never know one way or the other unless you ask them, because treating someone like they’re a person and not a thing should be your default. And the only people who cling to tradition at the expense of real people are sad, angry dwellers in the darkness who don’t even understand how pathetic they are, clutching and grasping at the things they remember without ever understanding that the world was never that simple to begin with. The future is bright, it is shining, and it belongs to everyone.”

Cormorant fishing in Yangshuo near Guilin, Guangxi, China. Christian Vaisse
Cormorant fishing is an old tradition in which fishermen use trained cormorants to catch fish.
I can't find any mention of a photographer Christian Vaisse that's not reblogs of this post, but I want to add smth about this guy:
Most cormorant fishermen are essentially historical re-enactors, who post for photos for money. Sort of like the Elmo guys in Times Square, if they dressed up as pilgrims.
Lao Huang, photographed here by Peter Yan, actually grew up doing real cormorant fishing for a living. He's now retired, and does this more as a hobby (although he does make a good income from breeding the birds). As such, he's one of the few remaining authentic links to this pre-industrial fishing technique.
More photos and an interview with the photographer
in the contemporary world, the most fundamental human right - and, it often seems, the least protected one - is "being both Allowed and Able to go Somewhere Else." the rest is commentary.
the torments of prison are predicated on Not Letting You Leave. the most terrifying and degrading aspects of childhood are predicated on Not Letting You Leave. misogynists wail and moan and fearmonger about divorce and equal opportunity employment because they Allow Wife To Leave. borders and immigration restrictions exist, in no small part, to Prevent People From Leaving countries where they will be exploited and/or oppressed. fuck you for trying to leave. fuck you for exerting any control over your life whatsoever. that makes you the one at fault, actually.
david graeber described three fundamental freedoms: freedom to move, freedom to disobey orders, and freedom to reorganize social relations

Scooby Doo has great life lessons to teach:
If something evil is happening, it’s probably an old white man trying to make money.
thinking about how when you experience a lot of shame in your formative years (indirectly, directly, as abuse or just as an extant part of your environment) it becomes really difficult to be perceived by other people in general. the mere concept of someone watching me do anything, whether it's a totally normal activity or something unfamiliar of embarrassing, whether I'm working in an excel spreadsheet or being horny on main, it just makes my skin crawl and my brain turn to static because I cannot convince myself that it's okay to be seen and experienced. because to exist is to be ashamed and embarrassed of myself, whether I'm failing at something or not, because my instinctive reaction to anyone commenting on ANYTHING I'm doing is to crawl into a hole and die. it's such a bizarre and dehumanizing feeling to just not be able to exist without constantly thinking about how you are being Perceived. ceaseless watcher give me a god damn break.
sorry to put your tags on blast on this insane breach containment post I have since muted, but you're right and you should say it.
It is defeatable. Go for the throat.
