What to do if your account gets wrongfully terminated
So by now most of you have probably heard that my account was suddenly terminated (aka banned) on Saturday afternoon. Iām back now, and since I had to do some digging into this on my own, I figured Iād make a post for others to reference.Ā
How to tell if youāve been wrongfully terminated
You will find yourself suddenly locked out of your account. For me, I had just made a post when I got kicked to the login screen. My password wouldnāt work, so I tried to reset it, at which point I got this screen:
Now, if Tumblr legitimately terminated your account - meaning, you broke a rule and they banned you for it - they should send you an email telling you why. So, immediately check your email. If you donāt get anything, it was probably a glitch. These happen shockingly often, so thereās a whole process to it.Ā
How to get your account back
First, submit a support ticket. Tumblrās support email does NOT work, you MUST go through their site. SelectĀ āTerminated accountā. Write a POLITE message explaining the situation. Describe what you were doing when you suddenly got kicked off, and state that to the best of your knowledge, you havenāt broken any rules, or that if you did, you would be willing to delete the offending posts. Include your url and email.
Check your email. You should immediately get an automatic message saying theyāre looking into the problem. If you donāt that means that Tumblr marked your email as spam (because they banned you).Ā If you need to, resend the ticket using a different email address at the bottom. Explain that your account email doesnāt seem to be going through and thatās why youāre using a different one.Ā
Wait.Ā Tumblr Supportās hours of operation are 9-5 EST, Monday through Friday. If, like me, you submitted your ticket on a weekend, you may be in for a wait. If you donāt get a response within 24 hours, DO NOT SEND ANOTHER TICKET, but instead reply to the email they sent you. Iāve seen it advised that you should send another ticket only if the problem isnāt fixed within the week.Ā
Check you url often.Ā Tumblr will likely never respond to your email letting you know what happened or that youāve been reinstated. Check your url every so often, and if it finally loads as your blog (instead of theĀ āThereās nothing hereā screen) you are free to log back in.Ā
And thatās it! If it was a glitch, they SHOULD reinstate your account, but you MUST submit a support ticket letting them know whatās going on.Ā
Okay, so, in the years since writing this guide, Iāve both seen some discussion as well as made my own observations that lead me to believe this is not just a glitch with Tumblrās code.
More likely, if youāre reading this because you got termed, your blog was caught up in a bot dragnet.
Tumblr, like all social media, has bots. And Tumblr also does regular bot purges. Itās strikingly clear to me when these purges happen, because this post will gain a ton of notes in the span of a day. Occasionally, but not always, this will happen shortly after I notice an influx of bot followers.
That means that, for most people experiencing this problem, you are doing something that triggers Tumblrās automated bot removal process. I cannot say what it is. Social media tends to keep their bot removal criteria vague, so that people scripting bots canāt evade capture.
Which sucks for the innocent human bloggers caught up in the purges, but it also means that if you can get someone to double check your blog, you should be reinstated pretty swiftly.
My blog has not been termed again, but if you check the notes of this post, you will see plenty of people who got their blog back using this process, many of them in the last few months. So these steps should still work.
I would like to add a note, make sure Tumblr itself is in a good working order before you send your support request. I tried to email twice during the last remains of the outage the other day, only to go āā¦.shouldnāt they have emailed me by now?ā several hours later. Resubmitted my ticket and got the insta-email. I canāt say for sure how quickly my blog was reinstated because I was on a plane for much of it, but I can tell you it was within six hours.

The Illinois House of Representatives passed a bill on Wednesday requiring frontier AI labs like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind to have their safety practices audited by a third party. If signed into law, AI safety experts tell WIRED, it would be the nationās leading check on the power of major AI companies.
The bill, SB 315, now heads to governor JB Pritzkerās desk. In a post on social media on Wednesday, Pritzker said he plans to sign the bill, citing a need to hold Big Tech accountable.
Since Congress has yet to pass any meaningful AI safety legislation, state lawmakers have happily stepped up in recent years to promote bills that show their constituents theyāre keeping Silicon Valley in check. As AI tools become increasingly popular, and the companies behind them race toward massive IPOs, polls show that American voters are looking for more AI regulation.
As a result, safety advocates and tech companies have zeroed in on state legislatures as the primary battleground to hash out how these laws should look. OpenAIās chief of global affairs, Chris Lehane, told WIRED last week that the companyās AI policy is now oriented around passing a series of similar state laws.
California and New York have the strongest AI safety laws, requiring tech companies to provide information about model guardrails and to publish reports on safety incidents as they occur. Illinoisā bill goes a step further, requiring independent auditors to verify that an AI lab is adhering to its own safety standards. Previously, no independent body was required to keep an AI lab accountable to its own safety claims.
āWe're in a situation where the AI companies grade their own homework,ā says Scott Wisor, policy director at Secure AI Project, a nonprofit that supports SB 315. āShould SB 315 become law, Illinois would require an independent auditor to check whether the AI labs in fact adhere to their safety commitments.āGot a Tip?Are you a current or former government employee who wants to talk about what's happening? Wisor says itās broadly expected that, under SB 315, AI labs could use the Big Four accounting and auditing firmsāDeloitte, EY, KPMG, and PwCāto audit their safety practices. He also says itās possible that AI labs could tap members of the AI Evaluator Forumāa coalition of smaller research organizations including METR, Transluce, and Averiāto assess adherence to safety standards.
Illinois state representative Daniel Didech, a sponsor of SB 315, tells WIRED that state legislatures are playing an important role by shaping Americaās AI policy and acting as a testing ground for any federal laws that might come in the future. āLaws like this create a world where itās more likely for the federal government to pass something,ā Didech says.
Corporate Interests
Illinois has emerged as a major arena in the ongoing fight over state AI laws. OpenAI previously supported a bill in Illinois that would let AI labs dodge liability if their models caused catastrophic harm. However, Lehane has since said the companyās blanket support for the bill was an oversight, and it never supported the liability shield in the bill. More recently, OpenAI endorsed SB 315.
āThe Illinois General Assembly has shown real bipartisan leadership in advancing SB 315 and developing a thoughtful framework for frontier AI safety. As AI systems become more capable, clear expectations around safety, transparency, incident reporting, and accountability matter,ā Lehane said in a statement to WIRED.
