Maybe there was something wonky about the tone or the dialogue or you added something that didnât fit but itâs usually ten sentences back. And every single time I get stuck in a fic I count back ten sentences and itâs always fucking there

mlm/nblm/gaylm flags
(i am actually not entirely sure which is the proper flag or who invented them because there is still a lot of discourse and different variations of the flag)
the first flag is for mlm and nblm and has the least amount of controversy behind it so itâs probably your safest bet to you but it might not be the most recognizable. from top to bottom the colours represent attraction and beauty, mlm of colour, community and support, acceptance, trans and non binary, peace and warmth, love and romance
the second flag is a gaylm flag which was made by a gaylm trans man, it is the most recognisable flag but it is similar to a flag that has controversy surrounding whether it is a recolour of the lesbian flag (which i as a lesbian donât mind but others may disagree) which was created by a transphobe. the flag above is for gay men and the colours from top to bottom represent community, healing, joy, gnc nb and trans men, pure love, fortitude, and diversity

the bisexual flag was designed by michael page in 1988 to increase visibility towards bisexual people

greysexual and greyromantic flags
there is multiple different renditions of the greysexual flag, the earliest was made in 2014 and was symbolic of someone who feels limited sexual or romantic attraction but not none
greysexual and greyromantic people are on the ace spectrum but may feel infrequency or very limited sexual or romantic attraction, they may also experience sexual or romantic attraction that is only specific to certain circumstances
they may feel uncertain about whether they feel attraction or have attraction that only ambiguously there, they also may feel alienated from romantic or sexual attraction
i canât talk shit about the pirates of the caribbean films as if elizabeth swann becoming pirate king didnât hand my entire ass to me and make me the gay i am today
these 2 looks basically defined my sexuality and iâm not afraid to admit it
things pirates of the caribbean got right:
1. will and elizabethâs love story
2. elizabeth becoming pirate king
3. avoiding sexualizing elizabeth or the other female pirate characters in the first 3 films by allowing them to wear period-accurate pirate outfits that arenât tailored to be revealing and impractical for âsex appealâ just because theyâre women
4. hans zimmerâs entire score but especially the iconic âheâs a pirateâ main theme
5. When the movie came out, morally-gray characters like Jack were actually not really a thing yet in pop culture, and itâs not Piratesâ fault that there are a ton of stupid shitty copycats out there.
6. I run a corseting panel at cons and literally use Elizabethâs lace-up scene as a video clip of what historical corseting was actually like, because the only thing they got wrong in this scene is that tightlacing wouldnât be a thing for about another 200 years (and you couldnât tightlace with the corset style Elizabeth is wearing anyway). Itâs one of the most accurate corseting scenes Iâve ever seen.
7. Willâs hat.
8. That scene with all the pirates on the gallows where that little boy starts singing Hoist the Colours? Yeah, thatâs fucking legendary. The rest of AWE was kind of a trash fire, but that scene gave me goosebumps.
9. Thereâs this great shot in the first one where they really drive home the class differences inherent in this time period by having the governor talking about progress and civilization to Elizabeth in their carriage, and then they cut to a shot outside the carriage where a beggar gets splashed by mud from the wheel. Itâs a perfect way to underline that everything is not, in fact, a nice little upper-class fairytale, and to give some weight to Willâs storyline, because he has a lot more in common with that beggar than with the governor.
10. For its time, the CGI was fucking amazing.
11. And letâs not forget the work of the makeup department, which had to actually invent new ways of putting on makeup for this movie.
12. The governorâs death scene. Holy shit.
13. They could have gone with a Jack/Will/Elizabeth love triangle, but they didnât. There are some hints Jack is in love (or at least in lust) with Elizabeth, but he recognizes that she loves Will, and thatâs that.
14. Youâve got to admit that wedding was unique.
15. The introduction of fantasy elements to historical fiction outside of Tolkein-esque fantasy, and how it contributed to and expanded the Fantasy Media boom weâre still enjoying today.
1. They had a woman of colour play a goddess.
2. They had a woman pirate right in the first film, when the tradition is to only show male ones (hell, the PotC ride at Disney had a wench auction scene until recently). And it was a female pirate of colour at that!
3. Elizabeth may not have known how to fight in the first film, but she wasnât helpless either. Her first instinct was to fight, but she also had the brains to recognize when it was best to hide instead. Plus when given the chance she stabbed Barbosa that one time.
4. Elizabethâs lack of fighting ability was not simply because she was a woman, it was clear it was due to her societal circumstances, since we saw other women of different socioeconomic backgrounds being able to fight (and when given the opportunity to learn Elizabeth took to fighting like a duck on water).
5. The Hoist the Colours scene where we see pirates of multiple ethnicities and their varying flags, reminding us that pirates came in all shapes and sizes and werenât just white men.
6. One of the Pirate Lords being yet ANOTHER woman of colour. She may not have had much of a speaking role if memory serves, but even her presence is already a big deal.
7. The pirates accepting their King is a woman without much fuss.

My favorite part about the Bretheren Court voting wasnât that they were against Elizabeth for becoming King as a woman and newcomer. They were pissed at Jack for being a chaotic neutral who broke the decades long tradition of an egotistical stalemate by voting for someone besides himself.
Also, the deleted scenes from Black Pearl and At Worldâs End that divulge more of Jackâs troubled past, like how he was branded as a pirate by the East Indian Trading Company because he stole a ship full of slaves and freed them.

So, so many works Iâve read could be vastly improved with tightening and shaving of superfluous words. Wordiness is an easy stumbling block, as weâre used to how we talk. Weâre used to how others (long ago) wrote. But times change, my friend, and so do expectations of the writer. We donât get paid by the word in fiction. So show your smarts and say as much as you can with as much power as you can in as few words as possible.
Here are a few things you can cut without reserve to help shorten your story right now. And as you catch yourself using these words in your next draft, hit that backspace before you finish the sentence! Itâs okay if you already have. You can go delete them now. No one will ever know.
Moment/Second/Minute
Itâs so tempting. I am guilty of using this word like fertilizer in my first drafts. But most of the time, these words arenât needed at all. They add nothing.
He sat down for a moment, sipping his coffee. vs. He sat down and sipped at his coffee.
But he only did it for a moment, you say!
He sat down for a moment, sipping his coffee. When the door opened a second later, he shot to his feet. vs. He sat down and sipped his coffee. The door opened, and before he could swallow his first sip, he shot to his feet.
I know, this is about making your writing more concise and my ârightâ example has more words than the first example. But whatâs the difference? The words used in the second sentence are more tangible. They give a visual that âa second laterâ and âfor a momentâ donât. And you could leave that part out, of course, if youâre really going for trimming word count. It doesnât paint quite the same image, but âThe door opened and he shot to his feet.â is a perfectly good sentence.
Suddenly/All of a sudden
Youâve heard this one, before, surely. These words are usedâŚwhen? When youâre trying to portray suddenness. Surprise, perhaps. So why are you adding in extra words to slow down the pace?
She flipped on the TV and reclined in her chair. All of sudden, the TV flashed a bright light and the power went out. vs. She flipped on the TV and reclined in her chair. The TV flashed once before the lights went dark. The power was out.
That sense of immediacy is felt when stuff just happens. So let it happen. If itâs rhythm youâre worried about, then find more useful words to create the rhythm. Notice that I didnât just cut âAll of a suddenâ out of the sentence and leave it. I reworded it a bit to make it stronger.
Finally
It can be a useful word, but more often than not, itâs just taking up space.
Really/Very
JustâŚdelete them.
To alter a Mark Twain quote:
âSubstitute â[fucking]â every time youâre inclined to write âvery;â your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be.â
But seriously, if youâre saying, âShe was breathing very hard.â You could just cut the âveryâ and say, âShe was breathing hard.â Or, even better, âShe was panting.â Or, EVEN BETTER: âShe panted.â
Himself/herself/myself/themselves
Reflexive nouns have a specific purpose, though they can still often be avoided. They fall into the category of âuse only when itâs confusing otherwise.â
Correct: He looked at himself in the mirror. Better: He looked in the mirror.
Incorrect: She gave them to Andrew and myself before leaving. Correct: She gave them to Andrew and me before leaving.
Technically correct I guess: I havenât eaten lunch myself. (Intensive pronoun; aka waste of words) Better: I havenât eaten lunch.
Intensive pronouns add emphasis, but that emphasis is negligible and often negated by the power of tightening your narrative.
That
You can likely cut 60% of your âthat"s and your story will be unaffected. Sometimes, you do need to add a âthatâ here and there for clarification, but not always. And sometimes itâs just plain incorrect.
The jacket was the coolest one that heâd ever owned. vs. The jacket was the coolest one heâd ever owned.
In other cases, you might do well to substitute âthatâ with âwhich.â Though, if youâre doing this, make sure you do it properly. That change can often alter the meaning of your sentence. That can be for the better, though.
The vandalism that read âBad Wolfâ made Rose nervous. vs. The vandalism, which read âBad Wolf,â made Rose nervous.
Do you see the difference? In the first sentence, the words are what make Rose nervous. In the second, the vandalism itself makes Rose nervous, and it happens to say âBad Wolf.â In this case, if youâve watched Doctor Who, then you know the first example is the correct one.
So when youâre sharing details using âthatâ or âwhich,â contemplate how important they are to meaning of the sentence to determine which type of clause you need to use.
Then
Or worse, âAnd then.â
It makes your writing sound a bit juvenile. Either cut it entirely, or substitute âand.â
She jumped into the pool, then hit her head on the bottom. vs. She jumped into the pool and hit her head on the bottom.
And then, after all that time, she fell asleep. vs. After all that time, she fell asleep.
Even
Sometime âevenâ can help emphasize a situation or behavior, but when itâs used in narrative improperly, it sounds childish and silly.
He couldnât even breathe. vs. He couldnât breathe.
Even with the new hair gel, his hair was terrible. (This one is fine, though you could still cut that âevenâ if you really wanted toâŚ)
Just
JustâŚDelete it.
Breathe/breath/exhale/inhale/sigh/nod/shrug
Another one Iâm so guilty of. In my first drafts, I tend to talk about how a character is breathing, or when theyâre sighing like nobodyâs business. I know a lot of writers who are guilty of this, too. Itâs a great tool to use scarcely. In intense moments, you can let your character take a final deep breath to calm themselves. When a character almost drowns, those first few sweet breaths are important. But you readers know that people breath all the time. And just because you need a beat in your dialogue doesnât mean you need to remind your reader that the character is still breathing or moving.
Rather/quite/somewhat
She was rather tall. She was tall. He was quite idiotic. He was idiotic. They were somewhat snazzy. They were snazzy. Why do you need those words? Kill âem.
Start/begin
This is a great example of fluff.
She started to run toward the shop. vs. She ran toward the shop.
He began scolding them for their performance. vs. He scolded them for their performance.
There are obviously uses for this word, like anything. He started the car. Begin your tests! But when youâre using it to slow the action and the pace of your narrative, then consider heavily if you need it. You probably donât.
In order to/in an attempt to
Phrases that add unneeded complications, cumbersome wordingâŚkill âem!
She bit down in an attempt to stop herself from screaming. vs. She bit down to stop herself from screaming.
Was able to
He was able to call. vs. He could call. OR He called.
This is one that isnât inherently bad, but it can easily be overused and cutting it will help simplify your narrative.
Due to
Ugh. Are you trying to sound proper and stuffy? Because thatâs a reason, I guess, to use this phraseâŚand yet it sounds like doodoo. (Yes. Iâm an adult.) Rephrase. Use âBecause ofâ or just avoid the need altogether.
We stopped due to traffic. vs. We stopped because of traffic. OR (Strength of narrative!) We stopped mid-highway. The parked cars went on beyond the curve of the road, out of sight.
Visibly/obviously/apparently/audibly
These are a sign of telling in your narrative when you should probably be showing.
She was visibly shaking. â> She shivered, hugging her upper arms. He was obviously tired. â> He yawned and tripped on his own feet as he crossed the room. They were apparently angry. â> They stomped and shouted, demanding attention. She screamed audibly. (Really?) â> She screamed.
Donât tell your readers what emotion a character is feeling. Instead, give a few clues that they can see/hear/feel the emotion too.
While
This word has lots of legitimate uses. However, if youâre using it poorly, then your narrative reads like an Early Readerâs book, and you (unless thatâs what youâre writing) probably donât want that.
âGet it together,â he said while flipping them off. vs. âGet it together,â he said, flipping them off.
Turned
One of the classics. So overused, my friends. Itâs needed on occasion, but not nearly as often as we use it. Just cut it out.
They turned toward her as they spoke. vs. They gave her their full attention as they spoke. OR They looked into her eyes. OR (Nothing. Readers donât have to be updated on every little movement.)
Saw/looked/regarded
UGH. Regarded:Looked::Mentioned:Said
And, like âsaid,â many, many instances of these words can be nixed.
She saw them run for the hills. vs. They ran for the hills.
This can be tricky, I know, when youâre writing in limited-third or first POV. Itâs tempting to put every action directly through your POV characterâs filter. But resist that temptation! There are times when itâs appropriate, occasionally, but it can be overdone so easily.
I looked at her and said, âPlease.â vs. I said,â Please.â OR. I took her hand. âPlease.â
This example sides with the breathing and the turning. Itâs often an unneeded update on the tiny movements of the characters. And, again, sometimes you need that beat or that little detail in an intense moment, but not often.
Said/replied/stated/spoke/mentioned/asked/commented/yelled/cried/shouted
Iâm not here to tell you to cut all your dialogue tags (please donât). Iâm also going to the last person who insists you get rid of âsaid.â In fact, Iâm in the âsaid is invisibleâ party of writing nerds and I think, if youâre going to use a standard tag, it should be âsaidâ 90% of the time.Â
But aside from that, using as few dialogue tags as possible is a good thing. Iâll do a full post on this soon, but for now, be aware of how often you rely on these words in your dialogue and do your best not to overuse them. Use surrounding action and context to take some of the reliance off of these words.Â
To-Be in all its conjugated forms
If youâre using any of this list:
am, is, are, was, were, be, being, had been
Then check yo'self. Some tenses call for an auxiliary verb. Some types of sentence do, too, not doubt about it. But many donât, and cutting to-be verbs when you can will help tighten your writing.
We were going to the store. vs. We went to the store.
Sounds were echoing through the chamber. vs. Sounds echoed through the chamber.
To-be verbs can also be an indicator of passive voice, though they arenât always.
He was hit by the ball. vs. The ball hit him.
Last but not least, check all of your adverbs.
Chances are, if youâre using an adverb, you could be using a single strong verb instead and giving each sentence more punch.
He ran quickly. â> He sprinted. I hit him hard. â> I socked him. She spoke quietly. â> She whispered. They ran into each other fast. â> They crashed.
So what am I supposed to do about this?
Take it to heart. Try not to let these words take over your brain as you write. Once your manuscript is finished, try this method:
Use Find and Replace. Replace any and all of the aforementioned words in ALL-CAPS. Now, if youâve paid attention to my advice in using emphasis, then those all-caps will really stick out as youâre reading over your work and you can decide at each instance whether your usage is appropriate, or if it needs to be rewritten. As I did to this very old draft of mine from my first NaNoWriMo (in which I used every single word on this list, Iâm sure).
When I used this method with my most recent WIP, I was able to cut my word count from 105k to 93k without cutting any content whatsoever. It takes a lot of work and itâs pretty tedious but the results are amazing!
It wouldnât be the English language without exceptions, would it?
Now, there is actually an important time for intentionally using any or all of the words on this list. You know when that is?

Do Converted Androids Differ From Self-Deviated Androids?
Iâve been thinking a bit about this. Mainly how the androids Markus converts have crazy, sudden, and fervent devotion to him.Â
The Freedom March?
The one where they assemble hundreds of androids, a lot of them freshly deviated?
Yeah, so remember how you can tell them to just stand their ground, and theyâll just do it? Even as theyâre all gunned down? Or order them to attack? And theyâll run straight into a massacre?
I donât know about you, but I feel like at least some of those guys who just woke up would probably be likeâŚokay cool thx bro for giving me free will and all. But with this nice fresh appreciation of not wanting to die, I think ima skip out on this one.Â
But that doesnât happen. Not for a single android.
AND THENÂ ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DEVIANT QUESTION youâve got people like Ralph, who self-deviate and just want to stay out of the way and live in peace. Yes, Ralph can sacrifice himself for Kara and co. at the camp, but only if theyâd built some sort of relationship first.
Likewise, North and Simon will both sacrifice themselves to save Markus. But only if theyâre at a certain level of closeness/relationship. And guess what? They also self-deviated. You know who sacrifices himself for Markus without any relational status involved? John. How did he deviate again? Oh, yeah. Markus pulled him behind a crate and converted him.
And this instant devotion doesnât seem to be limited to just Markus.
Remember this? Free a bunch of androids from CyberLife Tower and theyâll just march forth all over Detroit at Connorâs behest? And suddenly people want to hear a speech from him? Markus is dead and you awakened us so of course you should talk to everyone and be our leader!Â
To be fair, the anomaly with sudden, enthusiastic devotion of deviated androids is likely just due to gameplay mechanics and whatâs easiest for streamlining the story. Thereâs also something to be said for being a bit lost and looking for direction after gaining free will/freedom so suddenly. A leader calling you to do something, offering purpose and direction, certainly would have its appeal.
BUT that doesnât account for all of it. Especially not with what Jericho is willing to do for Markus. How they follow him blindly regardless if he wants to talk and make friends with the humans or if he wants to wage all-out war against them (looking at you, nuclear ending). I can accept that there would be androids in both of those camps of thought. But for the same group of androids to swing so wildly based on the word of one man?Â
Wasnât it free will they were supposed to have gained?Â
And as a side noteâ
Can we just talk about the difference between when Markus saves these guys versus when Connor does? đ

And yes, I realize that Markus is their known leader. Of course theyâd be happy to be saved by âMarkus himself.â But dayum, son, in such a high stakes, life-or-death situation, Iâd think youâd just be happy and relieved to be saved at all. Me personally, Iâd probably be ready to thank whoever it was regardless cause holy RA9 Iâm still alive.
I could see an argument where, well, maybe he recognized the âfamous Deviant Hunterâ and was confused. But if that was the case, I think his reaction mightâve been a little more pronounced. More of a recoil in shock/repulsion rather than a âoh. Look. A person. Not my deviator.â
We know that Kamski wanted to the revolution to succeed. Thereâs footage of him that didnât fully make it past production where, if the revolution had failed, he says heâd âbe at the helmâ of the next one to make sure theyâd win (timestamp 6:26).
And weâve seen the variable behavior of deviants who deviate on their own versus those who are converted.
Is it that far fetched Kamski mightâveâŚadded a little something extra in the coding there when one of the RK-model androids deviate someone?Â

This has been an ongoing conversation in the fandom for a while now. I remember getting into some discussions with people on Discord servers about this very thing back in the day, lol. But yeah, thereâs a real question here of whether or not Markus and Connor forcibly deviating other androids can even be considered proper deviation or not. There are a couple main theories on this iirc. The first considers just what happens when Markus or Connor deviates another. How does it occur? What exactly is it they do to break through their coding? Itâs been suggested that, since deviancy is caused by very strong emotion, what theyâre doing is sharing memories. Itâs basically an interface boosted to 11 that manages to trigger the non-deviant enough to elicit an emotional response, thereby forcing them to deviate. In this way, it opens the door up for all androids possibly being capable of this with Markus just being the first to realize. Iâve also seen it suggested that this could be why all the AP700s in the CyberLife basement are able to seemingly convert each other without Connor directly connecting with them all. If weâre to use this theory with the aforementioned observation, then itâs possible that the reason all the androids Markus converts are so fiercely loyal to him and the cause is because theyâve basically lived through his life with him, privy to the most pivotal moments that led to him deviating in the first place. With that sort of constructed empathy in place, it could be argued that every android that follows him does so because they believe in what theyâre doing just as much as Markus does, which would make for a pretty fearless, formidable force who are liable to run into bullet fire when asked. Another theory of deviancy (and the one I personally subscribe to) is that it acts like a virus, much like Kamski says if questioned about it. It is my belief that the rA9 so revered throughout the game is in fact the start-up sequence for that code. This explains why deviants seem so enamored with it and treat it as some sort of god. If all of them are aware, at least on a very basic level, that rA9 is what led to them waking up and becoming aware, it could perhaps be seen as some sort of deity. ârA9 will save us all.â And, quite literally, that is what it does. So, going by this theory, what Markus and Connor are doing when they deviate another android is injecting them with the rA9 âvirus,â giving the other androidâs system a jump-start on deviancy without ever having to experience a traumatic or overly-emotional event to activate it in the first place. And, if weâre trying to figure out why these forcibly-deviated androids are so loyal, perhaps we can turn to literal naivety here? After all, it must be a jarring experience, to be so suddenly aware. I imagine they would be looking for some sort of guidance, some one to direct them as their programming would have before. And in this way, we can perhaps assume that they look towards the one who awoke them in the first place and innocently agree to what theyâre asking of them. A third theory of deviancy suggests that there is something inherent in the RK line that allows for this phenomenon of forced-deviation. I also subscribe to this theory to an extent in that I think the RKâs specialized software perhaps played a crucial role in what they were capable of in the game. However, Iâm of two minds on whether or not this would remain a skill only they could have. There are a lot of androids in the world in 2038. If only the RK series could convert a non-deviant, Connor and Markus would be in incredibly high demand all across the country and on into other nations that deal in CyberLife androids. The scope is just too massive I think for this to be the case and so, for practicalityâs sake, I think Jericho must figure out some other way in the aftermath of the Revolution. Perhaps whatever method Connor used in the basement? The visible chain reaction of the AP700s is very obvious after all: Connor only touched the one and it spread all on its own. So yeah, I think
this oneâs pretty likely, too. However, this is definitely the most likely theory to hold weight when considering a newly-deviant androidâs immediate priorities. If Markus and Connor are using some sort of special program in order to accomplish this task, then it also follows that they could implant an order directly in them at the same time. This theory gives them much more direct control over how an android deviates and, if they were in dire need of backup like in the Freedom March or the Battle for Detroit, thereâs a definite possibility that they influenced the newly deviated androids into doing what they needed to accomplish their missions. And perhaps itâs not even a conscious decision, but it still makes sense. The fact that no android is seen just⌠leaving or saying no, I donât want to do this or having any sort of opposition at all is very suspicious. And it ties in closely with the last theory, which is: The forcibly-deviated androids are not actually fully deviant at all. Merely, whatever Connor and Markus do to them in the process, it breaks them free of CyberLifeâs control without necessarily demolishing their servile programming completely. And in that way, they basically are just managing to have an army of semi-sentient slaves to instruct as they see fit. Which is⌠a very dour thought, but still a possibility. Iâve seen all these and more suggested by people in discussions and there are certain merits for each. Itâs a very interesting subject to theorize about, honestly. And there are certainly some opportunities for a very dark take on the whole matter. But yeah, I just wanted to add my two cents in for the sorts of things Iâve discussed with people over the years and some of the possibilities for why things seem so off. Cheers!

Iâve seen a lot of posts on my dash tonight about users who are threatening suicide, with other Tumblr members posting in effort to try to get ahold of them. I think you all should see this:
IF THERE IS EVER A TUMBLR USER WHO HAS POSTED A GOOD-BYE MESSAGE, SUICIDE NOTE, VIDEO, OR ANYTHING OF THE SORT, PLEASE FOLLOW THIS POST.
1. Scroll to the top of your dashboard.
2. See the circular question mark icon at the top? Itâs the third one over from your home symbol. Click on that, and a screen similar to the one in the picture will come up.
3. Where you can type in questions, the box with the magnifying glass at the top, type in the word âsuicide.â
4. Click on the first link that shows up. It should say, âPass the URL of the blog on to us.â
5. Type in the userâs URL and tell Tumblr admin that the user is contemplating suicide and has posted a message indicating that they are going through with it or will be attempting. Hit send! Tumblr administration will perform a number of actions to contact the user and take the necessary steps to prevent the suicide.
TUMBLR: THIS COULD SAVE A USERâS LIFE. PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE SUICIDE THREATS.

Y'know, whenever people want to talk about why aspec people âcountâ as an oppressed identity, they tend to go for the big stuff like corrective rape and conversion therapy. And like, we should absolutely talk about that stuff. Obviously those things are terrible and important and we need to raise awareness and deal with them.
But I feel like people often gloss over how⌠quietly traumatising it is to grow up being told that there is only one way to be happyâ and that everybody who doesnât conform to that norm is secretly miserable and just doesnât know itâ and then to gradually realise that, for reasons that you cannot help, that is never going to happen for you.
Youâre not going to find a prince/princess and ride off into the sunset. Or if you do, then itâs not going to look exactly the way it does in fairytales. Youâre not going to get a ânormalâ relationship, because you are not ânormalâ, and everybody and everything around you keeps telling you that thatâs bad.
You see films where characters are presented as being financially stable, genuinely passionate about their work and surrounded by friends and family, but then spend the rest of the plot realising that the real thing they needed was a (romantic and sexual) partner, to make them 'completeâ.
You absorb the idea that any relationships you have with allo people will ultimately be unfulfilling on their side, and that this will be your fault (even if you discussed things with your partner beforehand and they decided that they were a-okay with having those sorts of boundaries in a relationship) unless you deliberately force yourself into situations that you arenât comfortable with, so as to make uo for your 'defectsâ.
You grow up feeling lowkey gaslighted because all the adults in your life (even in LGBT+ spaces. In fact especially in LGBT+ spaces) are insisting that itâs totally normal to not be attracted to anybody at your age, and then you go to school and everybody keeps pressuring you to name somebody youâre attracted to because they canât imagine not being attracted to anybody at your age.
And then you get older and realise that one day youâre going to be expected to leave home, and that one day all your friends are going to be expected to put aside other relationships and 'settle downâ with a primary partner and you donât know what youâre going to do after that because you straight up donât have a roadmap for what a 'happy endingâ looks like for someone like you.
(And the LGBT+ community is little help, because so many people in there are more than happy to tell you that youâre not oppressed at all. That youâre like this because you donât want to have sex, and/or you donât want to have any relationships, that your orientation is some sort of choice you madeâ like not eating bananasâ rather than an intrinsic part of you that a lot of us have at some point tried to wish away.)
Even if youâre grey or demi, and do experience those feelings, you still have to deal with the fact that youâre not experiencing them the 'normalâ way and that thatâs going to effect your relationships and your ability to find one in the first place.
If youâre aiming for lifelong singlehood (which is valid af) or looking for a qpp, then youâre going to have to spend the rest of your life either letting people make wrong assumptions about your situation (at best that your relationship is of a different nature than it actually is, at worst that the life youâve chosen is really just a consolation prize because you 'failedâ at finding a romantic/sexual partner) or pulling out a powerpoint and several webpages every time you want to explain it.
This what being aspec looks like for most people, and it is constantly minimised as being unimportant and not worth fighting againstâ even in aspec spacesâ because weâve all on some level absorbed the idea that oppression is only worth fighting against if itâs big, and dramatic, and immediately obvious. That all the little incidents of suffering that we experience on a daily basis are not enough to be worth bothering about.
I mean, who gives a shit if you feel broken, inherently toxic as a partner, and like youâre going to be denied happiness because of your orientation? Shouldnât we all just shut up and thank our lucky stars we donât have to deal with all the stuff some of the other letters in the acronym have to put up with (leaving aside the fact that there are many aspec people who identify with more than one letter)?
So you know what? If youâre aspec and you relate to anything Iâve said above (or can think of other things relating your your aspec-ness that I havenât mentioned) then this is me telling you now that itâs enough. Even if we got rid of all the big stuff (which weâre unlikely to do any time soon becauseâ Shock! Horror!â the big stuff is actually connected to all the small stuff) we would still be unable to consider our fight 'overâ because what you are experiencing is not 'basically okayâ and something we should just be expected to 'put up withâ.
No matter what anybody tells you, we have the right to demand more from life than this.
OP, I hope itâs okay to expand on this, but I just wanna add how itâs nearly impossible to be self sustaining while being single.
The fact that you get tax benefits for being married and having children as well as the dual-income household is something aspecs are barred from on an inherent basis because of our identities. Not to mention intersections like other queer identities, neurodivergency, disability, mental illness, chronic illness, and a host of other things I canât think of right now.
Your breakdown of the social impact of what we face and how deeply weâve internalized all that was spot on, and everyone who still doesnât understand what aspecs experience needs to read it. I feel that itâs also important to talk about how this system either guarantees weâll be working poor or that we force ourselves into unhappy normative relationships to avoid it.
And like. I wish aphobes would shut the fuck up about how our suffering and discrimination starts and ends with âsomeone was mean to me online uwuâ because Iâm tired of people suggesting aspecs need to have their identities raped out of them, and then turn right around and call us toxic perverts.
