IT’S IN THE CARDS, an adult rom-com with speculative elements about a fake psychic who hires a real psychic to do palm readings at their metaphysical shop. Complete: on submission!

AUGUST ON REPEAT, an adult rom-com with speculative elements about a birthday wish gone wrong that sends a person into a time-loop, which can only be ended by successfully navigating a job interview...without getting distracted by using the loops to romance their neighbor instead. Currently being revised.

Something nobody prepares you for is that the better you get at writing the harder it becomes. beginners write freely because they don't know enough to know what's wrong. then you learn. and suddenly you can see every single flaw in real time as you're making it and you have to write anyway while your own brain is in the corner going "that's a weak verb. that transition is lazy. you've used that word three times." getting good at this is mostly just getting better at ignoring yourself.

From August on Repeat, the time loop rom-com: August and Gabriel take a baking class! Gabriel shows August how to work a piping bag Patrick Swayze Ghost style - if that scene was set in a room full of rowdy children and with buttercream instead of clay or whatever.

He hands me a bag of frosting. “Okay, now hold the bag over one of your cupcakes.”

I do.

“Start your swirl on the outside and then move it inwards.”

I do.

…not.

“Let me show you. I just have to…hang on.” I expect him to take the bag, but instead, he steps behind me. “Sorry, can’t figure out where to go. Is it cool if I like, bear hug you?”

“Um.” I look at the children. “Yes.”

I stay as still as possible as he settles his body behind me. He wraps his arms around my middle, settling his hands on top of mine on the bag. His hands are big enough that they almost completely cover mine. “Okay, we’re going to start with a little pressure on the top so all the buttercream pushes towards the bottom, kind-of like you’re squeezing a toothpaste tube to get it all out.”

I follow his lead, squeezing the tube as he squeezes my hand. And I’m not even weird about it.

“Now we put the tip right over the cupcake. We’re going to start on the outside and swirl it inside, okay?”

“Okay.”

“It's go time!” He squeezes my other hand, the one closer to the tip. Frosting comes out much slower this time. Together, we swirl it inward. “Ta da!”

“Oh my god,” I say. “It looks perfect.”

“Yeah, not bad!” There’s a moment when he lingers with his arms around me before abruptly backing away. Then, he grabs a strawberry from our container and places it on top of the swirl, just like the example. “Now it’s perfect.”

August and Gabriel from the time loop WIP are a Barbecue Couple.

Gabriel is on the grill. He has become a Grill Guy (affectionate). He'll cook the meat and serve it up with homemade sauce and sides. He has a Kiss the Cook apron that was purchased as a joke and worn as a joke but also…he wouldn’t mind a kiss.

August is the official taste-tester. They are, technically, a passable cook but they’ll leave that work to the guy who’s happy to hoard the spatula. Besides that, they’re just happy to be outside. They’ve spent enough time caring for their houseplants and herb garden that they’ve learned to photosynthesize a bit. (Well…in their heart they have.)

Cook is preparing the food, drinking, prepping the grill, drinking, cooking the food, drinking, fending off hoards of hungry privateers, and drinking. He's going to feed all of them, drink some more, and then make the lazy sods wash the dishes under his direct supervision because they obviously can't be trusted to do it right.

Kit and Alice have decided to bug Cook despite his threats to withhold food and affection. They've got lovers' privileges, they can do what they want.

Edward has come prepared with citronella candles and runes to drive the bugs away and had to be threatened to leave his notebook behind during the party. It's not that he doesn't enjoy these things, but it's shockingly difficult to find time to research on a flying ship.

Captain Proulx and Hakim (unlike the rest of the crew) are waiting patiently for the food to be done and doing any setup required.
