Representations of Female Suicide by Drowning in Victorian Culture by Valerie Meessen
[image description]: screenshot of text, some of which is highlighted. it begins, highlighted: In death, the female loses the quality of being Other, and becomes an inanimate object that no longer threatens male order. Her body, once 'a site of superlative alterity,' can now be controlled, composed, and dissected. [end highlight] In this state, the woman can be idealized. These ideas can be placed within the nineteenth century patriarchal cult of invalidism that Dijkstra has described. This cult glorified female suffering, illness, and consequently, their deaths. Women who could be defined as either faint, frail or fading away, were set as icons of virtuous femininity. The 'consumptive' look consequently became an ideal of feminine beauty, which prescribed a pale, almost translucent skin, feverish eyes, and an emaciated body. This sort of idealization went hand in hand with an [highlighting begins again] eroticization of the dead female, the ultimate object of male fantasy. [end highlight, end description].
AITA for realizing that my best friend is actually a ghost and not telling him because i'm worried that if he realizes he's dead he'll finally be able to accept it and fully pass on and i won't be able to hang out with him anymore?
AITA if i've been dead for a while but haven't told my best friend yet because he doesn't seem to have realized i'm a ghost and if he does i'm worried that he'll finally be able to accept it and let me go and i can't bear the thought of losing him?
AITA for killing that guy
i refused to stay buried because i love you why are you running
babe it's me i'm just covered in dirt and blood because i had to claw my way up into the light and crawl on my hands and knees back home to you stop screaming
It actually kinda pisses me off that every time thereās an adaptation of some classic work coming out, there are takes like āmaybe we should not judge the adaptation compared to the originalā⦠I think if the creator doesnāt want their work to be compared and judged on comparison, they can make literally any other type of piece. Iām not arguing for a word for word adaptation - I think those are impossible, first of all, and just not fun to strive for. But slapping a recognisable title, names and plots into your work, and then turning around and asking people not to compare your work to the original is simply absurd lol

i would make the worst kind of vampire because i would always be like "hey check out how long i can go without blood lol" as a form of guilty self-harm poorly disguised as discipline and then black out and binge-slaughter a bunch of people, only reinforcing my conviction that i need to develop better self control by starving myself as often as possible
had a fucked up dream i had a book that turned out could never be read again the same as the first time because each reread the characters became incrementally more aware that the events of the book had happened before and they were ārelivingā it and i reread enough times that they became self aware, figured out they were in a book, acknowledged me as the reader, and some lost their minds or had existential crises, became violent to other characters or themselves, some begged me to never stop reading or they ceased to exist and others begged me to end it all stop reading and keeping them trapped in the endless loop of torment, and the literal only way to get the book back to its first run was to hand it off to someone else to read for the first time and for some reason i physically couldnāt tell anyone about it so iād have to just hope whoever i gave it to would only read it once and i could never open the book again to check if they were okay and back to normal because i was terrified of fucking them all up again :(
And while Iām transcribing Klingerās notes, I have to share this one with Tumblr as well. Forā¦you knowā¦reasons:
āAlthough literary critics have minutely examined this scene from the perspective of sexual fantasies (and see homoerotic elements in Draculaās claiming Harker for his own), there seems little reason - in the light of later developments - to see the scene as other than the establishment of a pecking order with respect to food source. Of course, Harker has no idea that he is viewed as a āwinepress,ā and so, putting the scene in the only perspective he can understand, he recounts accusations about āloveā and ākisses.ā It is an interesting comment on Harkerās character (and perhaps his prior experiences) that despite the warnings of the Transylvanian natives, he appears to be readier to imagine homosexual relations with Dracula than vampiric relations.ā

dracula daily is the best way to read dracula for many reasons but primarily because the letters from lucy and mina getting delivered right to my inbox feels like a group chat. me and the girls discussing and analyzing our relationships while lamenting the fact that we arenāt in person because long distance debriefs arenāt the same. is this dracula by bram stoker or an actual conversation I had with my best friend this week? whoās to say!
big fan of when a character is dead and the narrative frames them in a very angelic, soft, gentle manner but then it turns out not only are they still alive (plot twist) but theyre alive in the most gruesome and horrific way. your loving kind mentor who motivates you to fight in their memory came back wrong and theres blood and dirt under their fingernails from clawing they way out of the grave.
