i feel like i see a fair amount of posts circulating on here every couple months about what a travesty it is that so many of the fans of death grips are obnoxious, racist twats that are incapable of paying any respect to their music. which is 100% true, to be fair, but it's always sort of implicitly framed as if death grips was out their doing their own thing when one day, to their chagrin, they serendipitously caught the attention of throngs of chuds. the reality is that said chuds were a demographic that andy morin purposefully tried to court, at least in death grips's early days. iirc andy really aggressively marketed exmilitary on 4chan, would do a bunch of AMAs on /mu/, and hosted the no love deep web ARG on 4chan. like i think zach had some interest in deep web/imageboard culture because his younger brother would partake sometimes, but andy was the driving force behind that shit. they ended up with a fan base of internet racists that saw them as le epic meme band because of deliberate choices that specifically andy morin made to attract that audience.
