...does anyone else think that mr collins recycled the proposal speech for charlotte from his proposal to elizabeth? going on and on about lady catherine and his reasons for marrying and, dear god, did he mention that she was his third choice? obliquely, of course, but i can just see him thinking it necessary to mention that he had first selected jane and was told she was off-limits--with, of course, many congratulations at the happy event that was no doubt soon to occur--and then tried again with elizabeth and was refused--and truly, he bore her no ill will even though she'd called him the last man alive who could make her happy, but really, no ill will at all--and only then, when he had made himself even more than usually utterly ridiculous, tried to pretend like charlotte was his heart's desire?
and poor charlotte, who had literally no other option than to say yes, however much she might have wanted to say no, had to sit there and listen to it and drown in absurdity as deep as the ocean and imagine what her life was going to be for the next thirty to forty years?
I do think Mr. Collins recycled his speech. Don't know if he would have mentioned Jane and Elizabeth or pretended that Charlotte was his first choice.
I don't think Charlotte wanted to say no though, she went out to meet him on purpose, she snatched this guy with motives, it's awful to sit through but this is what she decided to want.
i do forget sometimes that mr collins, as a character, tends to suck all the narrative air out of any room he's in, and that if one subtracts him, charlotte does get pretty much everything she wants and that, in the context of the world she lives in, she's done well for herself. i kept imagining terrible dark nights of the soul but upon reflection, i don't think it's in charlotte's nature to be unhappy if she can help it; perhaps it is jane austen's comment on sometimes having to put up with necessary evils--and that includes lady catherine, too--in order to have access to the things that we want and that benefit us.
besides, it's in keeping with the themes of the book that austen is subtly (or maybe not so subtly) showing us that while happiness may be some matter of chance, it does take work on our part, too (i'm sure i'm not looking at mr bennet at this point). so, if this is what charlotte decided she wanted, then it is up to her to make it as bearable for herself as she can, and because she has done that, she may have a real chance at being, as she puts it, "tolerably happy."
Unlike some other mismatched and unhappy marriages, Charlotte stays respectful of Mr. Collins and seems to do her duty by him (unlike Mr. Bennet and Maria Bertram/Rushworth). She will need to make her own happiness, and I think the novel allows us to wonder if she always will, but she went in with her eyes open. In some ways she's like Persuasion's Lady Elliot, she wasn't in love with her idiot husband but she made the most of it (at least Sir Walter was hot tho...)
I think Charlotte is an example of the ridiculous choices that women who are in the gentry but have no fortune feel themselves forced to make. While Jane Austen/the narrator may not endorse the choice that Charlotte makes, she certainly understands the factors that drive it.
I find Charlotte vs. Lizzie/Jane particularly fascinating because for me, Jane Austen falls culturally in that fascinating space where marrying for romantic love is becoming the ideal, but the older habit of marrying to be "reasonably happy" (i.e. financially secure with a non-abusive partner of appropriate social standing) is still common and even seen as the more rational option by many many people (especially older ones I suppose).
Like, today we tend to judge Charlotte far more harshly because in Western culture, the turn towards love marriage as ideal has been completed long ago and anything else is seen as mercenary and low - "settling", as it were.
And of course, in the particular cultural space she inhabits, Austen DOES make Bingly and Darcy rich and of the correct social rank too, so that everyone can agree on the happiness of the ending...

ladies… has anyone ever told you it’s okay to be feminine 🩷 i’m sure no one has ever ever ever reinforced this deeply held secret, that’s it’s okay for you to be feminine. 🩷 i know the world totally tries to tell you that you have to be manly and masculine and grow your body hair and eat as much as you want and get strong and stand up for yourself and make waves and take up space and show your bare face and show your anger. but it’s okay to do the exact opposite actually. 🩷 it’s okay to shrink yourself down to the exact same mold every other woman is expected to conform to. 🩷 did you know that it’s okay to be feminine. 🩷 did you know it’s okay to be feminine. 🩷 did you know it’s okay to be feminine. 🩷 has anyone ever told you it’s okay to be feminine. 🩷 will you be feminine. 🩷 will you be feminine. 🩷 will you be feminine. 🩷 will you just be feminine already. 🩷🩷🩷

I hope I'm online when it happens. I want to see a sudden flood of crab rave memes right after refreshing my dash, and in the middle of it all, the Castiel news meme. That's how I want to learn of it; not through anything solemn or serious, but via overwhelming silly celebration.
Teachers have tried this and are amazed when their classes don’t go feral like in the book. It’s almost as if the book was supposed to be satire and not a treaty on the nature of humanity.
there’s a timeskip
THERE’S A TIMESKIP
THERE’S A TIMESKIP
THERE’S A TIMESKIP
after losing control of the signal fire there’s a FUCKING TIMESKIP and when the next chapter starts everyone’s hair is several inches longer and their clothes have rotted to shreds and they’re still just kind of chilling!!!!
IT TAKES THE TERRIBLE IMPERIALISM MIND-POISONED EXCESSIVELY BRITISH BOYS IN THE ACTUAL BOOK SEVERAL MONTHS TO COMMIT A SINGLE ACT OF INTENTIONAL VIOLENCE, EVEN THE ONE (1) CHILD WRITTEN AS AN ACTUAL SOCIOPATH
AND then when they DO turn on each other it is because
THERE’S AN UNSPECIFIED WORLD WAR HAPPENING
AND A PILOT’S CORPSE CRASH LANDS ON THE ISLAND POST-DOGFIGHT AND THE CHILDREN MISTAKE THE PARACHUTE FOR A MONSTER AND SPIRAL INTO PARANOIA
BECAUSE CHILDREN INHERIT THE LEGACY AND TRAUMA OF VIOLENCE FROM THE ADULTS WAGING WAR AROUND THEM
HURR DURR IN THE REAL WORLD IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN LIKE IN LORD OF THE FLIES -
IT DIDN’T HAPPEN THAT WAY IN LORD OF THE FLIES EITHER YOU JUST HAVEN’T READ IT SINCE HIGH SCHOOL IF EVER AND DON’T REMEMBER WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN THE GODDAMN BOOK
#tbf the dude wrote it to be a dick
yes. yes he did. i’m also gonna direct you to the real life ‘lord of the flies’ which occured in the 1960s, when six tongan schoolboys got stranded on a desert island for over a year before being rescued by an australian fisherman (who, it should be noted, later took on all six as crewmembers because the reason they were out in the first place was because they wanted to see the world, and named his ship the Ata after the island they were stranded on). nobody died. the only injuries that occurred were accidental, and when one of the boys broke his leg falling down a cliff, the others braced it and looked after him so well that it healed perfectly. if they argued, then they would literally go to opposite sides of the island until they’d cooled off. after leaving the island, they remained friends for the rest of their lives. here’s a photo of them as adults, with their rescuer (who is third from the left) and other members of his crew.
i read about this in rutger bregman’s human kind, a book i cannot recommend highly enough, but if you don’t want to go and read a whole book about the inherent goodness of humanity (which again, you really should) then the relevant excerpt can be found here.
Hey @phillipfancypants I am intrigued, go ahead and lay out your argument

Okay so basically this all started in 10th grade when my English teacher (idk if this context is needed but she grew up in Yugoslavia in the ‘80s before moving to the US as a teen and she has a VERY thick accent. She’s about 6’4” and has huge black hair that sticks out all around her head. She’s the human embodiment of a corvid bird. Truly such a fascinating person) anyway she was talking about Lord of the Flies in class and mentioned that a few years ago some students of hers tried to convince her that the book couldn’t have taken place during WWII and that she didn’t believe them because “there have been no atomic bombs except during World War Two” and an atomic bomb is referenced as the inciting factor for why the boys were flying over a deserted island in the first place.
But the thing is, if you actually look at all the throwaway historical context details in the book, there is no logical way that it could have taken place in WWII. I realized that all clues point towards an alternate timeline where the Cold War turned hot. About halfway through the book I started bookmarking any scrap of information related the time period and it was getting to the point where each chapter took me twice as long to read because I would continually need to check various articles and Wikipedia pages to cross reference.
Eventually, I ended up writing a 5 -page paper picking the book apart for details which you can read here but I’ll also give you the individual points (a mixture of historical details and borderline headcanon):
Early on in the book, the boys mention that there are probably maps in “the Queen’s library” that show where they are—this was one of the first things that stuck out to me, as Elizabeth II didn’t become Queen until 1952, and WWII ended in 1945
Ralph mentions watching something on television at home. His dad, although a naval officer, would almost certainly not be able to afford a TV in 1945, BUT televisions were already popularized around the time of Lizzy 2’s coronation (or at the very earliest the 1948 London Olympics) and it’s believable that Ralph could have had one at home. There’s also some mentions around space travel/putting a man on Mars that would make more sense during the Cold War
I found Piggy’s character to be very interesting. For one thing, he’s introduced as being fat due to his Aunt owning a candy store (his parents are both dead). If you know anything about the sugar ration during WWII, you’d know that candy stores would have been non-operational and Piggy would probably not have had access to an excess of sweets.
Continuing with Piggy, I’d place his distinctive accent as either London Cockney or London Estuary. If Piggy was from London, he would have been evacuated to the British countryside via train (the same evacuations in which the Pevensies stay with their uncle in Narnia) long before the dropping of the atomic bombs. Here’s where the headcanon comes in: I’d be willing to bet that Piggy was evacuated to the countryside as a baby during WWII and both his parents were among the 27,000 killed in the London Blitz, hence why he now lives with his aunt. By assuming the years leading up to the book are peacetime instead of wartime, there’s no issue around the candy store.
And finally, the most compelling argument imo…WHY WOULD BRITISH BOYS BE EVACUATED AFTER VE DAY??? In the book, it’s very clear that the LOTF boys are being evacuated from their boarding school after an atomic bomb was dropped. Victory in Europe was May 8th, 1945. The bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in early August. In what world would British boys be evacuated by a plane traveling over tropical airspace (historically child evacuations in the UK were domestic and carried out by train) to protect them from a bomb dropped in Japan four months after the end of the war in Europe?? The only plausible explanation would be that the USSR dropped a bomb on an Allied power and the boys are being evacuated from Briton all together to avoid nuclear fallout and/or future bombings.
Final note, at one point the boys consider building a new plane and decide against the idea because they “might get shot down by the Reds” even though the soviets were literally allies with Britain during WWII. Do you know when they most certainly weren’t allies? The Cold War.
Anyway, I end up giving her this essay which she reads and then promptly says “these are all very interesting points, but there was STILL no nuclear bomb besides the ones dropped on Japan in World War 2” and I’m like “Yes!! I know this!! And I’m saying it’s an alternate future!!” But she never really seemed to understand what I was saying.
Anyway a few weeks ago I was at my job (I’ve been working IT some summers at my high school after I graduated) and I ran into her and she says “I was going through my desk and I found that essay you wrote on LOTF! I read it again and it was a really good argument piece, especially for a 10th grader.”
So of course I ask her “oh really? Well, were you finally convinced?”
And she basically says “it was good…but no :) <3”
And I have simply not known peace since.
the libertarian fantasy of safety regulations existing due to sadistic enjoyment of government officials oppressing the innocent small business is kind of hilarious the more you think about it. I hope there is actually a guy out there who just fucking LOVES recalling unsafe food in a sicko sort of way. i'd respect him.
why not have the reader re-read a sentence now and then? it won't hurt him....

happy out for a walk bitch day to those who celebrate
if you work in a creative field...or if you do creative hobbies like writing or drawing...you need to make friends with people who don't do those things. you need to befriend normie Steve who has never written a story in his life. and this is because when you are in a creative job or hobby and spend all your time doing that thing, surrounded by very capable people, who you inevitably compare your own progress and skills to, you forget what the baseline human skill at that thing is. and it's usually zero. normie Steve has not written a story since the 3rd grade when his teacher made him do it. he's very good at other things that are not storytelling - but if you tell normie Steve that you wrote a full 300-page book from start to finish, he will think you're some kind of savant. he does not know ANYONE else who has done this. you need this perspective. because when you're constantly on Let's Write Stories dot Com then everyone on Let's Write Stories dot Com will inevitably be like "oh of course everyone on earth has written a book or several at this point!" and you canNOT let yourself think that. that is not even close to the average human experience. you are in a bubble. do not put yourself down. do not give up.
REAL AND TRUE. my newest normie steve does 40 mile bike rides on a whim and excels at outdoor rock climbing. i will always hype him up.

me, calling my brother, urgently: ok, who would win, the knights of the round table or the kpop demon hunters? you may laugh, but listen, the three of them jumped out of a plane with no parachute and landed totally fine IN HEELS at their kpop concert. i dont know that they can take much damage. plus i think lancelot would be really overwhelmed by the concept of kpop. and
initially the knights of the round table appear to have the advantage, attacking the supernatural sirens with confusing hair colors with gusto; huntrix is obviously reluctant to engage with innocent(ish) humans. however, the tides begin to turn when 1) rumi not only holds her own against excalibur, but also glows in a very non-evil-coded manner, which a random hermit explains is the same light as the star of bethlehem; 2) zoey tells sir gawain mid-battle she just wants everyone to stop fighting and he is constitutionally incapable of ignoring a request from a nice young lady; and 3) mira picks up one of the many pieces of cursed furniture lying around and absolutely whales the tar out of sir kay.
at this point actual demons attack and the two groups team up and for some reason lancelot is dressed as a backup dancer. crisis averted, the round table inquires about the obligatory secret familial connection and discover that rumi and merlin have the same demon dad, so that's okay. mira gives kay all his teeth back and they all have a feast, which is interrupted halfway through by derpy delivering a message with the next quest. unfortunately, the WIP is then abandoned before being picked up by a different author who writes 300K about blackpink's quest for the holy grail, the end.
The "abandoned before being picked up by a different author" bit makes it sound like we're talking about a 500,000 word multichapter AO3 story but the medieval romances were exactly like that
there are some things a character should not be able to tell us about themselves EVEN with a gun to their head. depending on the character that could even expand to include "most" things
i'm talking "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink" territory. "i've constructed an elaborate rube goldberg machine of plot to force this character to have precisely the realization about themselves that i want them to, and i'm only maybe 60% sure it'll work" territory. "the deity of their choice reveals it to them in a dream and they wake up and say, 'no, that can't be right,' and promptly forget about it" territory.

Something I really struggle to get people to understand is that like. Sometimes there was no intentional homoerotic subtext, the author was just extremely misogynistic. Sometimes the author wasn't "secretly shipping" those two men, the author literally just hates women so much that they see them as being literally incapable of relationships with depth. Like this is kind of a big thing with misogyny actually. A lot of extremely misogynistic people truly believe that a man can only have meaningful and complex relationships with other men because they literally just think women are so inferior they only exist to birth children and clean the house. It's like when people say along the lines of "no one worships exclusively men quite like straight men do". It's just that phenomenon actually. That happens to be manifesting in a raging misogynist's writing. Writing a man character who literally only puts effort into his friendships with other men while completely ignoring his literal girlfriend or wife is actually an extremely straight thing to write. And that doesn't mean you can't ship those men or that there are no stories with actual intentional homoerotic subtext. I just think it's important to be able to recognize extreme misogyny in writing and acknowledge it without brushing it off and assuming good intentions when literally all evidence is screaming that this was a misogynistic writing choice and not a representing gay men choice.
