I really don’t want to open this can of worms because Tumblr hath no fury like people called out on their political performativeness but it is literally driving me up the wall to watch people react to Serkis’ ‘keep Tolkien white’ commentary by insisting twice as hard that Tolkien would descend down to earth and dropkick the entire Republican party to hell or whatever, just because they want to ensure that a piece of media they enjoy isn’t seen as being morally impure. Case in point: I have seen at least five instances of Tolkien’s ‘I hate apartheid’ valedictorian address being used as a ‘counter’ to Serkis being racist, including by actual news outlets.
Except it’s only ever the ‘I hate apartheid’ line that’s shared, and not the actual quote in its full context. Because here it is:
If we consider what Merton College and what the Oxford School of English owes to the Antipodes, to the Southern Hemisphere, especially to scholars born in Australia and New Zealand, it may well be felt that it is only just that one of them should now ascend an Oxford chair of English. Indeed it may be thought that justice has been delayed since 1925. There are of course other lands under the Southern Cross. I was born in one; though I do not claim to be the most learned of those who have come hither from the far end of the Dark Continent. But I have the hatred of apartheid in my bones; and most of all I detest the segregation or separation of Language and Literature. I do not care which of them you think White.
Which is to say. This isn’t exactly the antiracist quote of the century, to say the least. This is a white South Africa born man and a white Australian shaking hands and going ‘omg we relate’ and expressing what is a very, very mild ‘segregation is not great’ opinion in order to convey his thoughts on an academic subject, ie the confluence of language and literature. Using race to make a point about his own subject of interest, in his own interest, which is, amusingly enough, what a lot of ostensibly well meaning progressive seem to be doing.
I also think that some of the general surprise around ‘what do you mean large swathes of the Tolkien fandom are incredibly conservative!?’ in lib/left Tolkien fandom is the result of a tendency in said parts of the fandom to transpose one’s own progressiveness onto Tolkien and turn a blind eye to things like, say, the Shire being a very specifically mid-century British racist construct that is very, very clear in its politics, often going so far as to insist it’s anarchist or an ideal society or whatever the fuck… and then getting really Pikachu-meme ‘but they’re misreading it’ every single time a conservative explains exactly what it is about the legendarium that they really love, and get surprised when someone uses the Shire being a racist construct to do more racism. It is 2026 let us do away with ‘I don’t see colour’ interpretations of media, I beg. Nobody is cancelling you for enjoying a book that is not kind to race. Most of the books I love are not kind to race.
The Andy Serkis controversy will mostly pass me by because I don’t keep up with fandoms and what’s playing or in production, but this essay is a good critique. I often find myself thinking about that orc quote and that Tolkien was a writer of a pre-Windrush generation. He did not predict that the people at the margins of Empire would migrate to the heartland of the world.
@esotolkienweek day one: lands ༝ the witch-realm of angmar
1 "the kingdom of angmar was founded in the far north of the misty mountains by the lord of the nazgûl, who was then aptly named the 'witch-king of angmar.' rising in TA 1300, angmar was established with the purpose of quelling the dúnedain of the north and the remains of arnor."
2 "the capital of angmar was carn dûm. it was the realm’s greatest fortress and served also as the seat of its king; it stood on the northwestern hand of the mountains of angmar. a mountain fortress of evil, carn dûm was inhabited by dark-willed men, orcs, and other fell creatures in service to the witch king of angmar."
I don't know if I've ever seen Tolkien fandom pick up on the detail that the Witch King's capital in Angmar sounds like "Cairn Doom".
I genuinely believe that the new SW trilogy wouldn’t have flopped out into irrelevance like it did if they hadn’t dumped Finn on the side of the freeway like a new pet rabbit the week after easter
Anyway in my heart Finn became a Jedi alongside Rey and inspired a Stormtrooper insurrection and Kyle Ron went back to his mom like he should have day fucking one and that angry redhead dude blew up with the star destroyer and Poe got to make it happen and at the end Rey doesn’t give a shit who her bitch ass non-palpatine parents might have been because she gets her new family like she needed and palpatine stays dead at the bottom of his musty hole like he should have and Finn and Poe give each other approximately 130% the amount of lingering meaningful looks and then one of their run-together-to-reunite moments results in a heat-of-the-moment make out like it should have and Luke and Leia meet in person a minimum of once so she can sibling slap him at least once for being a useless dramatic old hermit for a billion years and tell him to get the Chanel boots back on and stop being a sad hobo and then for no reason at all there is an ewok style moon of Endor forest party at the end like God intended
I need a turbo-Nerd to tell me why they dumped Finn like hot garbage.
"Racism"
So long as Rose Tico gets a better arc story-line than the one she got in Star Wars IX.
happy pride month.
in new zealand, our evil government are trying to legislate definitions of women and men, in ways that are legally incoherent but clearly trying to pave the way for more horrifically transphobic legislation. we have an election in a few months but our main opposition party, and all our mainstream news media, are so spineless and cooked that there's a good chance the ghouls will win reelection.
it took 2 whole months for local terf group 'speak up for women' to get 2,000 signatures on the petition that led to this new bill in our parliament.
it's taken five days for this pro-trans 'they don't speak for us' petition to get 17,000 signatures.
this is a show of support that is really heartening for a lot of trans people in our corner of the world.
cis/ish women, if you're from here but haven't signed yet, please do. and if you're not from here and you know any new zealanders, could you send them this petition? a full fifth of our population lives overseas, and there's a good chance they don't follow the news.

the place I work at remodeled these split gendered restrooms into “inclusive restrooms” and never told us what they meant while construction was ongoing. I need you to know every atom of potential criticism or whining that could’ve happened disappeared when people found out this meant we got 10 fully separate private bathrooms with sinks inside. I’ve not heard a single person crack a joke about the inclusive signage. this is the world TERFs are trying to steal from you
How the Supreme court ruling has been weaponised against British institutions.
On December 2, Girlguiding announced that trans girls would no longer be welcome. That felt especially cruel and hit me especially hard, because this was a direct attack on children. It wasn’t framed as protecting the children, as is often the case. This time the mask had slipped, and for the first time, this was a direct attack on children themselves — trans children in particular, and it was framed as compliance to a recent Supreme Court ruling. As if the court had descended from the heavens with tablets of stone declaring that little girls like my great niece are suddenly not only “not girls” but also fair game because they’re “not like other children”.
Then, the very next day, the Women’s Institute (WI) released their own sombre statement. Beginning in April, they will no longer accept transgender women as members. Frankly, it looked like a hostage video.
The WI is an absolute institution here here in the U.K. Technically, it’s a membership organisation for women, who meet up in village halls once per month, but in reality, it’s the heartbeat of village life. It’s known for jam making, choir singing, crafts, and community. For many older women, it’s a genuine lifeline — a place to go for routine and friendship in a world where social spaces are disappearing.
And now, after forty years of quiet, uneventful trans inclusion, the WI is closing the door. Not because they wanted to. Not because there was ever an issue — it’s not as if trans women were storming the jam-making classes and causing a riot. They are doing it because they felt “forced.” They claimed a recent Supreme Court ruling made their position “untenable.”
To get why they are so scared, you have to look at how earlier this year, the U.K. Supreme Court ruled that in specific parts of the Equality Act, “sex” refers to biological sex. That’s it. It didn’t ban trans women from any spaces. It didn’t say we aren’t women socially or culturally. It just cracked open a legal door.
But anti-trans lobby groups pounced. They realised they could weaponise this ruling to pressure any group with “women” or “female” in its name. They are actively hunting for targets: Girlguiding, the WI, the Ladies’ Pond on Hampstead Heath, book clubs, choirs. Anything that looks vulnerable.
The WI and Girlguiding were the perfect victims. They are beloved British institutions, sure, but they are financially fragile. They run on volunteers and bake sales, not corporate budgets. They knew a single lawsuit could bankrupt them. So, they folded. Not because inclusion was risky, but because the litigation was.
That is the sad reality: the Supreme Court ruling is being used as a bludgeon. It’s not about clarity or safety. It’s about intimidation — squeezing the kindest, gentlest institutions until they push us out.
The thing is, neither organisation was forced to do anything. They just couldn’t afford to fight.
This is all very important but I think it should be noted that the membership of these groups isn't taking it lying down. I don't know much about the WI, but GATE (guides against trans exclusion) formed after the announcement and have been protesting up and down the country, meeting with girlguiding leadership, and have a big social media presence. The majority of people in these groups don't want this change and are fighting it. Please support them if you can

Cover art to Look and Learn, December 1976
I don’t think my surviving collection of Look and Learn magazines goes this early.
Barker then turned his attention to his fellow author J.K. Rowling, who has had her fair share of controversy over the last few years over her opinions on the transgender community. “There’s a lot of pain amongst the transgender people that I know,” Barker stated. “They have a lot of issues in the world as it is, without a famous author opining on the subject. It just seems redundant. It just seems unkind.”
Noting Rowling’s vast financial success, Barker felt that Rowling’s newfound position of fame ought to exclude her from discussing trans rights. He added, “It really just seems redundant for a woman as successful, as validated in the world, as Ms Rowling, to be negative, to be disruptive if you will, to a very beaten up subculture. These are human beings. She has no right to opine, I think, upon the lives of human beings that she does not know.”
“I feel very protective of people who are on the edge of our culture as gay people still are,” Barker continued. “And certainly transgender people are on the edge of our culture. And here you have one of the most successful people in the frigging world – Ms Rowling. Going after a very emotionally vulnerable portion of our culture. It just seems unnecessary and unfair.”
Prejudice.
It turns out the Midnight Society isn’t just a social media fiction.

Genders of countries in Greek
We may never know what grammatical gender Aotearoa New Zealand has in Greek. I suspect it would likely be feminine singular.
Let Democracy decide The term LGBTQ that functions as an umbrella term for sexuality and gender identity stands for:
Lesbians, Guns, Bisexual, Transgender, Quality
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer
