Its funny how Xanxus's people are more protected than Tsunayoshi's even if he's Vongola Decimo
This is pretty much part of the Varia Arc
Tsuna wants to help his friends, which given his general inaction and lack of ability means they have to be in danger and he has to be aware of it and also be capable of actually helping, or he won't even attempt to
Xanxus knows his people are capable, so can be trusted to be off on their own and also be able to return to him
More importantly, for most of the manga, Tsuna's trying to keep his friends away from the mafia/reborn shenanigans
It's only in the Future Saga that this changes, thanks to his future self who decided to destroy the Vongola and send his friends away, so he could fake his death and yeet all responsibility away
nom nom nom on that irony nom nom
Tsuna is in the 'perfect position' as Vongola Decimo to solve a lot of mess. Should have power and agency.
I find his plot interesting (mental ill mom, spare heir sealed and put in a shelf, puppet against Xanxus) good, but him...
He's 14 and gets power and even a little smarter but...still fall for Timoteo's schemes, still befriend his Guardians...still don't act
He is a piece on the board moved around?
Okay so
Xanxus and Tsuna are very much narrative foils of each other.
It's not a perfect foil, but for an imperfect list
raised by different parents ie 'father' vs mother
raised in different economic social status ie vongola riches to Japanese middle class
different scholastic achievement ie Xanxus' seven language minimum vs Tsuna's one language
different social expectations ie politics to Don Vongola vs pity pass out of middle school to work a shit job
different expectations of what 'criminal' entails ie Italy's everyday vs Japan's exceptionalism
different cultural expectations in general ie Italian vs Japan in terms of sports, economics, infrastructure, religion etc
Which makes their similarities a lot more jarring
Mentally ill mothers
Fathers' busy with work
Both as pawns of the Vongola aka Nono
Its funny how Xanxus didn't existed in Daily Arc, it was gag manga
He's the generic rebellius prince with ice theme, I think? Amano forgot him after Varia Arc until he is needed to fight for Tsuna
Evil Heir vs Protag Good Heir, the usurper, the predecessor 'hero', the evil older brother even (cousin)? The sealed villain?
Red Eyes and Black Hairs and Scars? His Aesthetic?
Fandom made him a pretty complex character cause the ground is soft and we are digging, but his tropes, role and backstory are generic (I love him, just saying its obvious and funny)
I mean.
KHR started as a gag manga. So ofc, Xanxus didn't exist. He had no reason to, with the genre being comedy. You can do the Watsonian and Doylist rational to it, but in story, he had to have been gone before the rest of Nono's children to not even rate a mention. So Tsuna's the perceived 5th in line, after the Vongola's lost 4 potential heirs within the past 8 years.
Excellent odds there.
When KHR turned sharply into Shonen via the Kokuyo Arc aka Mukuro causing problems on purpose arc... Amano really had to start giving the mafia window dressing of the gag manga a bit of depth to enable further story/plotlines.
This means world and character building to a degree and so you bring out the tropes, which exist as tropes because they work. Narrative shorthands of the story.
Xanxus' 'theme' is more a riff off of the Seven Deadly Sins, which is again, a classic set of tropes. As is as you said, his coloration.
I wouldn't call Xanxus as someone with an Ice Theme since the whole personal popsicle experience isn't a theme. Nor the snowing on the day of his 'adoption' by Nono. Which um. You really don't get snow in Italy, much less Sicily, where the mafia is most prevalent. So you can actually look up the dates of snowfall, because it is such a rare event.
And yeah, the narrative also tries to set up the Good vs Evil Heir but it also fails to present Xanxus as Actual Evil. Callous and arrogant, terrifying but not without reason. Furthermore you have the Varia as a subset of an entirely different culture (Criminal Underworld Cultural Melting Pot with high internal loyalty vs Japanese power of shonen friendship, when half of them aren't even friends lol) and have different expectations of behavior. Subordinates vs friends. And then also. The Varia fails to adhere to the image presented within those chapters and also later in the series.
You can see why when you really start thinking about it, there's a whole lot of the Varia arc that really doesn't add up. Which is those mafia politics in the background.
Amazing how you get no mention of Xanxus getting punished for using Nono as a robo-battery in the series. There's so many layers of politics within the Varia arc, so it remains a favorite because that sand box is so rich to build with.
And no, Amano didn't forget Xanxus in the Future Saga. And he did get a mention during the Shimon mess. And then got used as a tension builder and opponent during the Curse of the Rainbow Arc. Also as a narrative shorthand for how dangerous the Vindice are.
And yes. Xanxus as the bastard son is a trope. Also the adopted son is the trope. And the denied inheritance because adopted is also a trope. His role as an antagonist is also a trope (but with very tasty politics). His unwilling alliance is also a trope. His sin theming is a trope.
In a shonen plot, he is in fact, pretty damn generic.
Which is why writing him outside of that is so much fun, especially with the window dressing of KHR's mafia/Underworld. Once you get into the behind the scenes and the bones of the culture and more, you actually get An Amazing Character.
He's got his problems but they really do just make me wanna chew on him more.
I find nana one of the hardest to deal with because she has power over tsuna as his mom, but acts like a child
also, camnot handle reality and probally have a psycotic break if you confront her
Yeah. Nana's one of those characters that you first look at and go, 'ah you're the oblivious and naive' type and then as the series progresses, you just have to either take her as 'intentionally and purposefully oblivious' or mentally impaired.
It's the kinder reading on her, to do the latter.
I'm sorry, but there's no other way to really read her character than that.
From the first chapter you see her fall for Reborn's very suspicious ad, but also fail to parent Tsuna in any meaningful way. She scolds but takes no further action than performative... in the land of cram schools, in a culture that takes academic success very seriously.
She also falls for other schemes, such as the vase guys and the mafia land resort tickets. Not to mention, she swallows Iemitsu's terrible lies. There should be a limit on it but no, it does get worse.
Sadly.
She lets a strange adult (Dino) stay the night on Reborn's word, also takes in Lambo, I-pin, Fuuta and Bianchi. That's technically four extra children in the home, because Bianchi's only sixteen/seventeen and thus not an adult legally. I forget when Japan dropped it's legal age from 20 to 18, but it doesn't really matter when Bianchi's not a legal adult in Italy either.
When Iemitsu is home, she caters to him over her own dependents ie the children in her home and allows him to behave in ways towards them that are well intentioned but harmful ie dropping Lambo and giving him "magic water' aka alcohol for the pain.
Anyway, what really irks me most about Nana is how the other characters respond as if her behavior is praise-worthy. Except Kyoko, who actually calls her out on it once and is then stopped by Reborn.

I don't get Erica's plot? She was raped? Why Nono is like that? He wanted her to marry the rapist????
How best to explain this?
Hmm.
Up until 1981 in Italy, a rapist could be forgiven of his crime (of rape) if he agreed to marry the woman he had raped.
This used to be legal for a lot of places. It still is in several parts of the world.
I believe wikipedia has a decent and quite sanitized overview of the cultural factors, how it could influence local relations, how it was perceived and how that perception has changed over time, how legal code was and then was changed etc. Yay biography
So enjoy the history and remember that Umei and Izzy usually place KHR taking place '05, when the manga was started.
Can you share your thoughts on Dino?
Always thought him a little creep? Invading Tsunayoshi's room? Calling him litlle bro? Predatory? A little pushy?
I mean his tutoring was shady
Dino on the surface looks like a well intentioned but other wise oblivious young adult that's experienced and benefited from Reborn's tutoring; that's what the narrative and Reborn says and Dino agrees with him
You peel away that surface a bit and you see the newest Cavallone Don wanting to keep close ties with the Vongola in its next generation; that's business. Dino and Tsuna aren't trauma bonded but both have Experienced Reborn, so it's almost like they have a hitman-shaped common ground
But you look at another angle and you see he's supposed to be Tsuna's Reborn-approved introduction to more aspects of the mafia and it's culture... and thus we get Yamamoto having visited the Cavallone way back in the Daily Life Arc. Like theoretically you also have Gokudera (hitman), Bianchi (hitman), and Lambo (hitman) as introductions to the mafia bit, but that's a personal service gig work industry, not a business and you don't get to have the world's strongest, richest and oldest mafia familigia (Vongola) run on just hired murder services. That they never tried again or that Nono's never sent anyone over is a bit of a plot hole.
And if Dino seems a little pushy, please note that there's a culture clash in what's acceptable levels of pushy, Reborn in the background insisting and so on. Because Tsuna's entire personality is absolutely trash in the Daily Life Arc. Part of it is thoughtless teenage boy stuff but still.
So like the first time we meet Dino, he's clearly playing a role as asked by Reborn. Yeah, he went along with it but also, Reborn is there.
Later, when tutoring Hibari for the Varia Arc, he did succeed in teaching Hibari how to summon Flames. Again, as asked for by Reborn.
Ultimately Dino's more of Reborn's patsy than his own Don in KHR due to how the manga focuses on Namimori instead of say the mafia window dressing so you don't get the deep cultural insights, because everyone is fluent in Japanese, don't ask how :3
Can’t risk it
The duck of creativity. I waited so long for it.
i’m desperate huhu
Please give me some inspiration oh great duck of creativity
Good morning! I’m salty.
I think we, as a general community, need to start taking this little moment more seriously.
This, right here? This is asking for consent. It’s a legal necessity, yes, but it is also you, the reader, actively consenting to see adult content; and in doing so, saying that you are of an age to see it, and that you’re emotionally capable of handling it.
You find the content you find behind this warning disgusting, horrifying, upsetting, triggering? You consented. You said you could handle it, and you were able to back out at any time. You take responsibility for yourself when you click through this, and so long as the creator used warnings and tags correctly, you bear full responsibility for its impact on you.
“Children are going to lie about their age” is probably true, but that’s the problem of them and the people who are responsible for them, not the people that they lie to.
If you’re not prepared to see adult content, created by and for adults, don’t fucking click through this. And if you do, for all that’s holy, don’t blame anyone else for it.
This needs to be reblogged today.
Consenting to see adult content doesn’t mean you should have to see a bunch of shit romanticizing incest and pedophilia you walnut
Except this is the last line of consent before the actual work. So if you’re at this button you have already done the following:
1) chosen to go onto AO3 in the first place
2) chosen the fandom you wish to read about
3) had the chance to filter for the things you do want to see like a specific pairing or a specific AU
4) had the chance to specifically filter out any tags you don’t want to see like, oh I don’t know, incest and non-con and dub-con and paedophilia
5) had the chance to set the rating level if you wish to remove any explicit content at all
6) have read the summary of the story, which aren’t always great but are the only indicator of what the story will be like writing wise so something about it was good enough for you to click on it.
7) have read the tags of the story which will tell you what is actually in the story. If you have used filters to remove stories with things you don’t want then there shouldn’t be anything in here that’s a shock to you but maybe there is. That’s why the tags are there for you to check for yourself.
8) Then you have to actually click on the story. You cannot see anything other than the summary or the tags without personally deciding that you are going to open and read this story.
9) Only here, at step number nine, do you get to the adult content warning pictured above. You have been through eight different steps, the last six of which have also been opportunities for you to see that this has adult content. And AO3 has *STILL* stopped you to ask one last time “are you sure you want to read this because it has things that only adults should see in it”.
If after this point you are reading incest and paedophilia then it’s probably because you specifically went looking for it.
You walnut.
This is the most beautiful thing that I have seen about ao3
Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.
Hey. Hey. Tumblr. Ides of March ppl. We can do this
Hell yeah moon holiday
Ooh coming up we should celebrate
PITCH: We call it Moon Day, and then every 7 years when it falls on a Monday, that's an even BIGGER deal and we call that Moon Day Monday and go absolutely apeshit about it (the next Moon Day Monday is in 2026 so we have a couple trial runs first)
MOON DAY MOON DAY MOON DAY
moon day is 20th July!!!
Scheduling this a day earlier to remind you all and myself about the Moon Day tomorow!
Happy moon day to all who celebrate
This is your reminder to prep for Moon Day on July 20th.

LIKES TO CHARGE REBLOGS TO CAST
you people aren't CASTING
hey did you know that uhh
i. the monster's body is a cultural body
ii. the monster always escapes
iii. the monster is the harbinger of category crisis
iv. the monster dwells at the gates of difference
v. the monster polices the borders of the possible
vi. fear of the monster is really a kind of desire
vii. the monster stands at the threshold… of becoming
oh shit i didn't expect this to actually get notes lmao
these are all direct quotes from jeffrey jerome cohen's "monster culture (seven theses)" (full pdf linked) i highly encourage you to read it yourself!
that said, while i think cohen's writing is evocative, it can be a little dense, so while i'm here, here's my capsule summary (you can also hear me talk about this in the first episode of my podcast) (listen to @ghostswerepeopletoo)
i. the monster's body is a cultural body - The monster is a work of fiction to be analyzed through tools of literary and sociological theory.
ii. the monster always escapes - As long as the cultural fear from which the monster stems persists, the monster will reappear in retellings, reimaginings, and sequels.
iii. the monster is the harbinger of category crisis - Monsters defy binaries and challenge easy comprehension or categorization.
iv. the monster dwells at the gates of difference - The monster represents the Other.
v. the monster polices the borders of the possible - Tales of the monster exist to discourage unacceptable or taboo behaviors.
vi. fear of the monster is really a kind of desire - Subjects can vicariously participate in the disruption of the social order through the monster.
vii. the monster stands at the threshold… of becoming - Within the monster we find information about the self.
people NEED to stop gatekeeping making music like ohhhh i don’t have an instrument ohhhhh i don’t know music theory ohhhhh i’m not gonna pay for some program. SHUT UP. take my hand.
you need NONE of that shit!!!!! there’s a website called beepbox.co. literally all you have to do is press things until it sounds a modicum of nice. it’s easy it’s free and it works on anything which has a browser because it’s a website.
if even ONE person starts making music bc of this post it will be worth it.
making bad music is just as important and okay as it is to write badly or draw badly or sing badly. you AREN’T BEHOLDEN TO MAKE GOOD MUSIC. making music is not utilitarian HAVE FUN. HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!
love how people will encourage people to just start making shit and see what happens when it comes to drawing and writing but when it comes to beginner musicians (music makers if you wish to be less formal) it’s just COMPLETE RADIO SILENCE. it feels like no one even knows you MAKE music it just sprouts up from the ground one day and some guy picks it up. am i alone in this dark cave
Fuck it
I'm gonna try and make music
Call me betovan bc I'm deaf as fuck /j
HELL YEAH!!!
Alternatively if you wanna get into music producing in a more “proper” way, you still don’t need any money.
Ableton has excellent free websites to learn the basics:
Learning Music
Learning Synths
You can learn basically everything you need on YouTube. I recommend:
Mercurial Tones Academy
Dan Worrall
Bthelick
A lot of your favorite artists, mainly in electronic music, likely have done track breakdowns, you can watch those to learn how they do things.
DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) ultimately all do the same things, and Cakewalk is a great FREE fully fledged one. Sure it has some issues, and doesn’t have many plugins included, but it works just fine. All the music I released so far was made there, before I made the jump to Ableton.
As for VST plugins:
Vital is an excellent free synth
Native Instruments Komplete Start is a good free collection of plugins
TDR Nova is a great free EQ
There’s a lot of others and I don’t wanna name everything I’m aware of here, but feel free to DM me for more (Or if you have any other questions and stuff too).
And as for samples, you can get a bunch of free ones at:
Cymatics
Ghosthack
Having good headphones is nice and what I’d recommend you invest in first once it comes to it, but even your current ones will probably be fine, mainly if you slap AutoEQ onto them to flatten the frequency response. And ultimately, music isn’t all about the mixing, the most important part is conveying an emotion.
I know this goes against the spirit of the original post a little, but I want people to know that getting into music production also no longer costs thousands, you can just do it at home on your computer without no money.
Yeah, there is still quite the learning curve, I get that, though it’s also why it’s managed to hold me as a hobby for so long.
I do however have something of the exact opposite variety too, the most simple way to make music I know of, and a wonderful little semi-social experience, along the lines of the game Journey:
The New PLINK! is the long overdue update of #plink by @DinahmoeSTHLM. Jam with friends and strangers all over the world.
hi op i think you should know that i did indeed make a song for the first time because of this
I don't think there's ever been a funnier piece of lore in a video game then the etymology of the word "gun" in FFXIV
@wibbley-wobble So in XIV lore there was a queen named Gunhilder who ruled a country that was conquered by the big bad guy nation, galemald, and she had a royal guard called “gunhilder’s blades” who fought with swords that had triggers on them and were used for channeling magic, and these were called gunblades after the royal guard, When garlemald conquered bozja they copied the design of their swords but garleans can’t use magic so to adopt their fighting style they switched to a mechanical design that used black powder. Later on firearms were developed off of this concept and since they were “gunblades without the blade” people started calling them guns.
masterpiece world building actually
you know what's even better? that lore is a magicalized remix of the word's irl etymology and i think that's brilliant
Oh. it’s just real. It was really that silly.
Seeing this going around again for the umpteenth time I’d like to reiterate that I know about the real world gunhilder and about allagan siege weapons. To me the funny part is that in eorzea, gunblades were invented before muskets
Given how many weird things in FFXIV are based on real world crazyness, I imagine the Gunhildr thing was intentional. The lore team are big nerds and do that all the time.
Except for cellphones being thousands of years old technology that nobody uses anymore. I think they did that one on their own.
I think it's because the lion furries are kinda the most normal thing going on here. Like, most of the time a character's race won't ever be mentioned by other characters unless it's relevant, and it's very rarely relevant. The mysterious hypercapitalist that actually isn't that evil and funds a lot of important stuff is a lawn gnome and everyone respects him, at least to his face. The Aztec king has three kids, of which two are different species from him (and each other) and the only one anybody says anything about is the trueborn because the king was supposedly sterile. All three kids have equal claim to the throne and no one ever questions that. There are multiple times that literal aliens from outer space come down and everybody is just like Oh hi, nice to meet you.
whenever i look into a historical monarch who doesn’t get talked about much and is just kind of a blank spot in my understanding of the historical narrative, 95% of the time what i find is pure white hot blistering capability. a pencil pusher for the ages. a 39 year reign with no more than three hours of sleep a night. there aren’t any good stories from his reign because he systematically caught and stopped all catastrophic good stories before they could start. you shrimply must respect it
semi-related but it’s ironic that game of thrones famously neglects to worldbuild textiles when (for me at least) textile history has proven one of the best lenses for an “aragorn’s tax policy” grounded view of history, especially for a late medieval-early modern english setting. yes henry vii of england reinstated the court of the star chamber, but you’ll get a better sense for the character of his reign by looking at how and why and with what result he disrupted the trans-european alum trade. yes elizabeth i of england loved essex and killed him, but you’ll get a better sense for her reign by looking at her sumptuary laws, why she passed them and how they were obeyed. the history of european pin manufacturing sheds more light on spanish-english relationships than any anecdote of walter raleigh could

I love how the others Families of the Alliance treat Timoteo
He's a arrogant fool, think himself superior and controlling of even other families
Can you tell me more about their options? Don Leone and Don Alliata
The Vongola as perceived in the Mafia Land bit of the Daily Life Arc, are considered top dogs of the mafia. Being the oldest, strongest and richest mafia family.
Anyway, so they have reason to be arrogant, especially with their Special Hyper Intuition. Which uh.
Look. Intuition is defined as, let me do a quick search, thank you Merriam Webster
the power or faculty of attaining to direct knowledge or cognition without evident rational thought and inference
immediate apprehension or cognition
knowledge or conviction gained by intuition
quick and ready insight
So you take this down, and super charge it and that's Hyper Intuition.
What this really boils down to is subconscious pattern recognition.
Do you pay attention to how someone walks? Not really, but you can still recognize who is coming towards you on how they walk right? Or how they knock or what they smell like and thousands of other little things. So know you know who's behind you or who's calling because they usually call you after making some posts on social media or whatever.
So therefore the wider the information and knowledge base and experiences, the better the system works.
But also as is said in fic, with it being subconscious and it is the brain processing this without cognitive oversight... you get garbage in and garbage comes out. Kinda like generative machine learning software. You can get something that's mostly right and with the inevitable cognitive bias of remembering you were mostly right again and again.. you still wanna trust it. Mostly right is still over 50% right.
In some ways, when seen in that light, Timoteo's everything and his influence on the Vongola and wider Underworld still falls in the 'still right enough to be successful as Don and Famiglia.'
His sons, on the other hand show that you really only have to be mostly wrong once.
But still the hmm wider faith in the hyper intuition is built on confirmation bias is not what I expected to be writing on this morning with this ask.
Anyway the reason that Umei and I usually break the Vongola power bloc into Vongola Alliance in fics is that various local families and so on would also like to maintain their power and authority. And at its founding, nobility still had legal power that the peasantry wouldn't. Dynastic thinking and so on gave them a leg up on Giotto, who grew up in a poverty stricken town.
-=-=-=-
So the Alliata are the Alliance Breadbasket and Giotto's initial founding family. Since he started doing his thing, as Sicily was just. On fire. Politically and in terms of public disorder.
The Vongola as The Vongola came later, with the special rings and likely a quick change in branding to avoid legal repercussions. Lying to authorities is a time honored human tradition. Clamshell piety and so on. Remember Knuckles is a priest.
This older founding gives the Alliata some historical prestige but doesn't change the fact that they have large tracts of land that needs to be worked and protected and ties up significant amounts of resources within the family from working the fields to managing the sale of crops etc.
It's not that the Alliata have no influence, but they stay in their lane and focus on defense.
They did have more influence when Nono's wife was alive as she was an Alliata...
But I don't think we've mentioned much about Don Alliata's personal opinions.
Mostly because I'm not sure which Don Alliata you're asking about.
-=-=-=-=-
And then we get to the Superbi.
Who are hmm. A lot more organized about their everything. By design. The Superbi who end up in charge of other Superbi are usually dynastic long-term thinkers and doers.
Because unlike the Alliata who's meant as a social safety net and local community help, the Vongola were due to special rings, charisma, charm and audacity, the shield and sword arm of the Alliata. (There's viable historical reasons on why the Varia is the House Closest to Founding Vongola and why the Alliata split off as their own thing instead of being subsumed entirely under the Vongola; Giotto's choice to demilitarize was not well accepted by the Alliata)
The Superbi were loosely related families, who were by the time of Secondo/Terzo, a lot more coherent because with the Vongola inspiring order by point of force, Sicily now was a lot more viable market and had ports. This is also when the Superbi really started organizing lineages under thematic names. And why you do kinda need the family trees, because with the addition of the animal theming, that does make knowing who's who to who a bit of a trial. Growing pains of a new system but well. It works and has long proven to have been worth it in terms of influence, curse-protection, immediate recognition etc
The Superbi famiglia as seen by Pantera's planning of the reunion market and so on, works more as a Union for those born as Superbi or those employed by Superbi.
Don Leone's vaguely respectful of what Nono Vongola's done over his tenure as Don Vongola, but that doesn't mean he can't find the man a fool. If his sons are unsuitable as an heir/Don Vongola, he can find another relative to train. Perfect be the enemy of good and so on. It's not like Don Vongola's getting younger.
Just wanted to let you know that, even if I'm not into everything you write, I still love how you write, and that you write, and I am so thankful for all the stories you have written - whether I was into them or not, whether you finished them or not.
Thanks! Writing can be fun, especially when I'm chasing an idea, even if I usually fail to finish things
Yeah, finishing things though. The ADHD dream™
