I talked about this in the tags of a different post the other day but the order got all fucked up somehow (i was using quotation marks but i thought they fixed that? whatever. tumblr.) and I need to get my thoughts out properly because that line is haunting me. the desperation with which he says it!!! the way luis physically grabbed at taliesin's arm!!!

I really love Hal's outburst this episode because really, I think he's upset about a lot of things, from the reality of Thjazi's death, to his normal stress about an upcoming show, to his anxiety about the political situation in Dol-Makjar and his family's safety in general, to what he specifically pins this on: his frustration with Thjazi's secrets and protection (which is of course tied up with Thjazi's death). And it's interesting that Bolaire comes at it precisely the wrong way, to say Thjazi was in the right. The thing is, I think Hal is less mad at Thjazi for keeping secrets. He was a revolutionary, after all, and you have to, and that's a pretty big theme of this entire episode. It's that he was, to Thjazi, a person to be protected from these machinations. It's not that the burden has cruelly fallen on his shoulders; it's that even Bolaire, who did not like Thjazi and whom Thjazi similarly didn't care for, was at least somewhat in on these schemes. Murray was only an acquaintance! But she was in on the smuggling and the underworld contacts.

I think Hal is again struggling most with the fact that his choice to be safe and respectable bought him about eighteen years before he had to descend into the sewers and kill people with swords again. And it's not that those years were in vain; some of what he is able to do now is because he spent that time becoming an established theater owner, and his relationships with Shadia, Hero, presumably Alogar, and honestly Azune are as strong as they are because he was the person who could take people in and make a safe place for them. But it's hard to focus on that when all he has have left of his brother is mysterious paint that Thjazi had meant to give him before being killed on flimsy political charges. So when Bolaire says that Thjazi was right for this, Hal is furious (and, imo, rightfully so) because that's what he regrets most: being someone Thjazi didn't involve earlier in the process. He does not want to have been protected, and now that he's finally joining the fight, Thjazi isn't here, so being told something about his late brother's wishes, even more so by someone who didn't love him or even like him, is just making it worse.

Anyway shoutout to John Williams, amazing composer and probably the one who made the other 50% of "holy shit amazing" soundtracks (Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Superman, and incidentally the original Harry Potter theme and score) who famously worked closely with the first openly transgender woman to be nominated for an Academy Award, Angela Morley. He respected her, and so far as I can see, has never made transphobic remarks.

Hans Zimmer also, iirc, makes extensive use of underlings who may in fact do most of the composing--but he gets the credit and they don't.

Klaus Badelt composed the original music for the first PotC film. Zimmer simply came in and built off that to do the sequels.

Also another project Hans Zimmer was involved in was the original Modern Warfare 2, though he was only involved in the title theme. Lorne Balfe did ALL the other osts and EVERYONE everywhere it seems only credits Zimmer for the entire ost. Basically he's not all that he's cracked up to be.
