going to start acting like i don't know anything about america. "people who aren't old enough to drink yet" ummmm we were talking about 19 year olds? they have been old enough to drink for a year now! you might be a little confused 😁
I definitely understand that it's annoying when people make assumptions, says the intersex AFAB person who has serious disability because of the assumption that forced gender surgery is a great idea.
However.
You walked on a website that's like 80% USAmericans, based in the US, and are complaining that USAmericans are discussing US norms without caveats.
There's 195 nations the UN recognizes; 205 on the Wiki list; Indigenous "tribes" in the US actually should be considered a nation each, so we're probably more like 300 just from the US; obviously indigenous people in other recognized nations add several hundred...
Yeah, you like the color of the caveat? Because I sure don't.
you tell americans "don't assume everyone is from the usa" and they will say "you want me to list every country and culture my statement DOESN'T apply to before i say anything??????? is that what you want??????" you know what yeah, that IS what i want now. start listing.
usamericans will let their internet companies grow into monopolistic megacorporations eliminating all the competing companies within their country while having a regime that expects competition to exist in order to ~innovate~, use the imperial spoils to outcompete local websites in other countries and drag them into bankruptcy, and then complain about non-usamericans daring to exist on their websites
every time I see people say "well you're on a website that is 80%-90% americans" I close my eyes and smile and furrow my brow and open my eyes and walk into the sunset with my hands clasped behind my back. pulling imaginary statistics out of nowhere to prove a point will make you look very silly!
the ACTUAL percentage of american users on this site isn't even 50%.
these stats are from two different statistic sites. the first one is from 2024, and the second is from 2026.
I've had people say to me "why wouldn't I assume everyone I talk to on tumblr is american? like 90% of tumblr users are" when in reality you're going to be wrong OVER HALF OF THE TIME if you assume someone here is from the USA.
it's like assuming every single person you talk to is a man just because men make up roughly 50% of earth's population. EVEN THEN you'd be right MORE OFTEN than if you assumed everyone on tumblr was american. don't make yourself look silly!
And nobody is asking you too consider every other country or every possible context our even any amount of extra reasearch before you make a post.
All we are asking is for you to vaguely remember the fact that there ARE other places out there and put some kind of indicator that your post is about the USA, when relevant, as people from other countries are already doing with theirs. This indicator does not have to be a disclaimer, it can be a context clue, but it needs to be more than something you assume everybody will know because you do.
