Fishlegs is so deep.
He grew up with nothing, right? and he gets horribly bullied. But instead of this being some throw away back story stuff it actually effects his behaviour (rare!)
for one, he goes hysteric. which is synonymous to an anger problem, ofcourse. Secondly, he's MISERABLY. How many times did he just lay down and give up when he and Hiccup were in a perilous situation? Straight up accepting that he'd die? I can remember atleast two times right off the bat. It's upsetting if anything... And thirdly, he is clearly a glass half empty kinda guy, always predicting the worst... AND THIS ALL MAKES SENSE CONSIDERING WHERE HE CAME FROM. OFCOURSE HE'D THINK (AND ACT) LIKE THAT
but what i think is most interesting is that he wants to be cool, you know? he isn't an edge lord. He ain't a nerd or a geek. He doesn't WANT to be an 'other'. He wants to fit in. This is evident in book 1 where he tries to get a cool looking dragon from the dragon nursery instead of settling for a smaller one.
I'll say it once I'll say it again, Fishlegs is just as self-important as Snotlout. It's just that the Fishlegs is scrawny and short-sighted. If Fishlegs had been born in Snotlout's position, with the same physique and stature, I reckon they'd be very very similar. minus the bullying.
Basically, i head cannon that Fishlegs has the same belief system as the other so called 'normal' vikings: only the strong can belong, hierarchy, value based on performance. The only difference being that he doesn't match up to these beliefs.
Comparatively, Hiccup is also a loser, but he reckons that's a problem with how the WORLD perceives him, instead of some lacking in himself. Anyway, I love Fishlegs. That twist where his father is Alvin?! INSANE. Love to hear your thoughts on him in any regards!!!! xxxxxxxxxx
My disagreement would be with that Hiccup is very much different. In the first book recall that Hiccup actually feels shame over not leaving Fishlegs to his fate, is disappointed in having landed with Toothless and desperately wants to do things the proper Viking way. It just doesn't work for him and he can't crush his compassion. It's not untill the scene where he's banished that he actually accepts the injustice of it all and calls it out. From then on it's a slow climb from "I would like to fit in as a Viking" to "This whole system is fucked and needs to be completely overhauld"
One of the aspects i really like about 'How to Ride a Dragon's Storm' is that no one is initially sympathetic to the Wanderers. Including Hiccup.
They're uncomfortable with slavery but they fully buy into the demonisation and dehumanisation of the Other. Hiccup wasn't thinking about their plight untill he's forced too and the Slavemark is forced on him. It's only by interacting with them as people and just generally being forced to carry the mark himself does he start feeling a greater duty to everyone.
I really appreciate that. Hiccup isn't born immune to his society's propaganda or some clear eyed free thinker. He learns because he's born vulnerable into a place of power, and said place means he's frequently faced between choosing power or choosing the people he's come to know through his vulnerability. Something something Love.
For contrasting reasons, I'll also say in Fishlegs's corner, that his tendency to keep his head lower and greater need to prove himself probably comes from being rock bottom of the Vikings in their hierarchy. Like his house is built apart from every one else's. In Steal A Sword there's an undercurrent to Stoick insisting that Hiccup stay away from him because everyone knows what Fishlegs is and he can't have people drawing connections to Hiccup.
If Hiccup or Camicazi go off on a quest to what they think need to be done and get into trouble, they'll get a whole fleet out looking for him. Hiccup has to sneak out to save Fishlegs. By Heartbreak Hiccup is savey enough to know he shouldn't bother asking. There's a reason the moment Hiccup thinks Fishlegs is dead dead that Hiccup decides he is going to become the King Of The Wilderwest for 'Fishlegs and everyone like him.'
Have to sleep now but I've remarked before that there's also something to how Camicazi is the most at home in Viking culture and the least concerned about the social aspect of their adventures, and how despite her physique she's skilled and privileged enough that she's accepted amongst her tribe and only questioned by those tribes who don't know her yet. I've argued that she could represent the 'model' marginalised person. Someone whose extreme skill in valued areas and alignment with her tribes valued allows her to maintain a higher social standing than she otherwise would, but is still vulnerable to judgement when removed from the safety of that bubble. The more she spends time with Hiccup, Fishlegs, the Dragons and other vulnerable people, the more she's exposed to that injustice.

I am begging the UK trans community and its allies to attend the Mass Lobby at Parliament on June 25th, 11am-4pm, organised by Trans Solidarity Alliance.

The new EHRC Code of Practice pushes trans people out of toilets, hospital wards, and community spaces. It normalises gender policing based on appearance and stereotypes. It becomes statutory guidance in the UK by the end of June.
Trans people are now legally their assigned gender at birth and must join gendered spaces accordingly, but if they are perceived as their lived gender, they can also be ejected from those spaces. The guidance says: either break the law, or donât pass too well.
A mass lobby is where you invite your MP to discuss your concerns with you in-person. Ask your MP to:
Demand full parliamentary scrutiny, debate, and use their free vote on the EHRC Code of Practice.
Support any motions rejecting the EHRC guidance. As of June 4th, Labour MP Nadia Whittome has submitted a prayer motion - Early Day Motion 240.
Write to Bridget Phillipson, the Minister for Women and Equalities about our concerns
Your MP does not have to be an ally, they do not have to respond to your email for you to show up and greencard them (details below the cut.) What matters is that as many people as possible show up.
I cannot stress this enough: Showing up in person matters. It is much more effective than petitions, emails, and letters.
It is a horrible, stressful time, and I am so sorry if you're trans and live in the UK. But I was at last year's mass lobby and the line for greencarding alone stretched around the back gates. It was a record breaking mass lobby and made us impossible to ignore. Let's do even better this time. Details under the cut:

Bring your personal worries about transphobia being signed into law, and trans friends being excluded from public spaces. You are a living person who deserves dignity. Remind your MP of that. You will also get guidance and brochures from Trans Solidarity Alliance that outlines our demands. This is mine from last year.

Got a refusal or no response from your MP?Â
Come anyway! You can request a same-day appointment with your MP through a process called greencarding. They will come and see you if theyâre already in Parliament. Even if they donât, theyâre made acutely aware of your cause because you showed up in person. This is my greencard from last year.
Here is the EHRC Code of Practice in full. It's a tough read, but some highlights are:
Organisations canât provide trans-inclusive, single-sex services, or they risk being sued for discrimination.
e.g. domestic violence support for women including trans women, menâs rugby group including trans men (12.68).
Trans people will have nowhere safe to pee.
If youâre a trans man, businesses can't allow you to pee in the men's, and you can also be ejected from womenâs bathrooms if youâre perceived as a man. Vice versa for trans women. EHRC suggests a âthird spaceâ bathroom, which is discriminatory and unworkable for most businesses. (13.130-133)
Sports organisations must exclude trans people from single-sex competitions (13.73).Â
A womenâs only sports competition must exclude trans women because of their biological advantage or face potential lawsuits (13.74), but a trans man who has undergone testosterone treatment can also be excluded based on fairness rules (13.81).
Trans women are stripped of the legal definition of âlesbianâ, and therefore no longer have legal protections if theyâre discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation. (2.50, 2.92).

i think the key difference between george lucasâs star wars and disneyâs star wars is that lucas is a man with an ideology. someone with a point of view, and all that entails. which comes with ideas of revolution, anti-imperialism, challenging the status quo, cultural appropriation and racist stereotypes. complex and contradictory ideas because thatâs how artists are: complex and complicated people. disney is not. disney is a corporation. a corporation canât have ideology, because ideology defeats the purpose of profit. and when the only thing you do is to turn on the movie manufacturing machine before you sit down and plan what ideas are you trying to convey to the audience, then your results are going to be washed out corporate garbage. and because when youâre a giant corporation who only cares about selling to the widest audience possible, you canât take sides. you canât decide on an idea. because you want to sell your product to people who are on the entire political spectrum. which results in movies without ideology, without purpose, without soul.
