Now having saved the Polyhedron while becoming a time lord, the miracle seeker ending may be the best ending for Dankovsky. There’s something sinister about his warping of reality in the True Immortality ending and a nonzero number of hints that this wasn’t the way this was supposed to go (Clara all but admitting that Mark Karminsky isn’t supposed to be in this story, the Rat Prophet being the one to offer to eat Maria’s dream, and Capella losing her shit at the suggestion of interrupting a prophecy).

I do like telling Mark and Aglaya to their faces I am Simon Kain though. That’s funny

I will say I very much enjoyed the final bit of sparring between Dankovsky and the Inspector. Daniil now knows a lot but doesn’t know quite as much as he thinks he does.

Playing pathologic 1 has me thinking about this again and actually I do think the miracle seeker is an added ‘good’ ending for Dankovsky. Is it truly good for him? Not really. I stand by my assessment that to anyone looking at him from the outside, he’s thrown away everything he’s ever cared about for chasing nonsense, but at least he’s happy. He touched something he can’t completely comprehend and it changed him and now he’s chasing that high forever.

I suppose you could say his ‘good’ endings are the ones where he destroys the polyhedron without meeting Simon and saves Thanatica to maintain the status quo. I need to go back through the dialogues and think about them again.

True Immortality is very interesting and feels like an attempt to rework his original ending in a way someone would conceivably choose in character rather than the cartoonishly evil notion of shelling the town. Like it’s very easy to see how Dankovsky came to abandoning the town in favor of saving the Polyhedron especially after meeting Simon. In his mind, everyone is immortal now, but not because they’ve meaningfully changed in any way, but Dankovsky can endlessly rewrite time until they’re alive again. And because he (and the player can do that) everything and everyone stops meaning anything if you can just undo it. In that way, it doesn’t matter if the town is alive or dead, Dankovsky doesn’t care either way. He’s the kid playing in the sandbox.

I’ve stayed away from the Rat Prophet elements so I do need to go back and see how those play out but overall I’m happy with how these shake out.
