After the OGL drama with Wizards of the Coast, I became a bit hesitant about using Dungeons and Dragons by name in Zorlok (information on that here, if you weren't familiar with the drama). I toyed with the idea of parodying it (with something like Bastions and Beholders, etc.) but I've also been playing around with the idea of creating a unique system called Mythmaker based on DnD but with added elements inspired by Pathfinder, Monster of the Week, and other such TTRPGs.

Mythmaker would be familiar and easily understood for fans of DnD or these other systems and would allow for me to get somewhat creative with mechanics and in-game lore. I'd also release a full playbook for it eventually (and have already started composing some of it for Zorlok's codex, pictures under the cut).

But then again, the original OGL drama has subsided and I know DnD brings a level of nostalgia, familiarity, and comfort for players.

Everytime I see posts like this I get filled with such profound sadness

Cause you know who has the same brainrot as you? The same unhinged feelings as you after you've read the fic? The person who always wants to scream about the fic with you?

THE PERSON WHO WROTE IT

I never used to leave comments but since I got into the habit of commenting on everything i enjoy it's been incredible. Especially when the author gets back to me about it and we get to have a discussion of what other ideas they had. One writer replied to my comment with a 5 paragraph essay detailing the Floorplan of the building the characters lived in and it was incredible

It got to a point where this was a dire problem, that because of the fic being lesser known actively impeded how many people would know it. Allowing more people to discover it would be helpful, but I lacked any means or resources of doing so. I had no sort of platform, and singlehandedly recommending this fic one on one with other friends seemed futile, considering that the likelihood of someone developing a fixation and having it change their life as much as I is very slim. It seemed like the only safe haven was talking about this to another random ao3 obsessed fic reader on the whims of midnight, because at least that random stranger would have any idea of what I was talking about.

Then I finally got the first chance to meet the author for the first time. The first thing he said to me was "YOU" and then PMed me. He recognize my username and talked about how much he missed getting their emails spammed with comments from me at late midnight. This spanned into a long invested and very interesting conversation of multiple different AUs and spin off AUs that will likely never see the light of day but are entirely between me and him. Conversations that have now totaled more than 24 hours of talking. We both reached pin limit. One of my suggestions (supposedly) is going to be an actual plot point in future chapters. Sidestory upon sidestory of a make believe character that only exists in a fic that both of us are obsessed with. He is one of my dear friends now, and I am included in the will with updating the fic upon his (unlikely) demise.

Supposedly the real point of this story is to not be scared of taking risks. Fanfiction authors are just the same as other people around you. At the end of the day they are just humans who have such a love for a single work that they are willing to dedicate time and passion into it. If you do not scream then the world will never know. Silence is conformity-- it is accepting failure before you even try; and as soon as you get your words out there to the world, the more you become used to doing it in other parts of your life.

If you're struggling to keep up with the massive workload of college classes, you can request a modified schedule as an accommodation.

Basically, you can request to be treated as a full-time student while doing classes part-time. I.e. if your school only allows you to live on campus if you're a full-time student, you can live on campus while only taking two or three classes per semester with this accommodation.

Upsides:

More time to complete assignments

Less time in class

Less stress/anxiety about making deadlines

Less to keep track of

Downsides

Profs will likely expect better work out of you

It will take longer to finish your degree

I have chronic fatigue syndrome and ADHD and this has been a game-changer for me. I don't need to be on meds for my ADHD since I can complete work pretty much at my own pace. I'm only required to leave my dorm once per day for class so even if I'm having a bad fatigue day I can usually manage it. If I can't, I'm only missing one class's worth of information.

I used to always get told I was "capable of better work" by teachers and professors all throughout my school career, and it's true, I am capable of better work. I just needed a lighter workload in order to do work I'm proud of. I currently have A's in both my classes, one of my classes I haven't gotten below an A- on anything I've turned in. I used to get B-'s and C's pretty consistently.

aka possessions which are just possessions, but which have noticeably improved my quality of life: for when people ask you “what do you want for your birthday/Christmas/graduation” and you instantly transform into St Francis and pledge fealty to Lady Poverty because your mind went blank

nice. new. sheets. I cannot emphasize this one enough. if you’re still using the same sheets you had in college, you should probably get new ones. get yourself some 100% bamboo rayon sheets—they’re silky and perfect for summer and great for sensitive skin! or, if you’re cold all the time, flannel sheets!

kitchen knives. or even just one really good kitchen knife.

new curtains—blackout if you are a creature of the night like I am

fleece lined anything, but especially sweatpants and hoodies. wool lined socks are also good. if you don’t have the option of coming home after work and putting on an entire outfit that is loose and fuzzy, you should change that, because you deserve that option.

cookie sheets with a layer of air between the top and the bottom. the bottoms of your cookies will never burn again.

kitchen scale!!! no more leveling off flour with a knife and getting it all over the table!! now all your measuring is just shoveling stuff in and out of bowls like you’re at the beach. baking is both more accurate and also way more fun.

coffee bean grinder. if you want to upgrade your coffee experience, this is a great one-time purchase. just-ground beans have a much better flavor than pre-ground.

hate exercising and realizing i've let go of a lot of anxiety and anger because i've overturned my fight-or-flight response.

hate eating right and eating enough and eating 3 times a day and realizing i'm less anxious and i have more energy

hate journaling in my stupid notebook with my stupid bic ballpoint and realizing that i've actually started healing about something once i'm able to externalize it

hate forgiving myself hate complimenting myself more often hate treating myself with kindness hate taking a gratitude inventory hate having patience hate talking to myself gently

hate turning my little face up to the sun and taking deep breaths and looking at nature and grounding myself and realizing that i feel less burdened and more hopeful, more actually-here, that i am able to see the good sides of myself more clearly, that i am able to see not only how far i have to grow - but also how much growth i have already done & how much of my life i truly fill with light and laughter and love

Here's a list of important notes for tumblr usage:

Don't censor words, particularly trigger warnings. Tumblr has a very functional blacklist (found in your settings) that can filter by post content and/or tags. But the word needs to actually be present for the filter to work. Censoring words like r*pe is actively harmful to people attempting to avoid those topics.

Use tags liberally, you have as many as you want, but don't tag unrelated shit. You'll get reported for spam really fast if you do.

Set an avatar and reblog things, otherwise you look like a bot.

You are not obligated to have your real name anywhere in your blog/bio/etc. Most people here use handles.

You can turn your ask box & anons on or off if you are experiencing any kind of harassment. You can also turn off replies on your posts, and turn off reblogs if you need to.

Tumblr has keyboard shortcuts on desktop. You can find them listed under the blog/account menu. Go learn them, they make life so much easier.

Reblog things. Seriously. Also set your dash in chronological order. You can maintain several blogs if need be, but reblogging things is normal, expected, and how you pass along stuff you enjoy.

The majority of people aren't reading your card/dni/blog bio before they reblog stuff. Posts get passed around and the OP often isn't the focal point of the post. Learn to live with it.

Fic writers: you have unlimited words, do not post fics as images.

Reblogs with comments/tags are encouraged. It's not like twitter's QRTs. The OP will see everything there. Know that before you comment.

You have a queue. This means you can set posts up ahead of time to run while you're busy. You can also completely ignore this and just spam your follows whenever you're online. Both are very commonplace

It's not weird to go through someone's blog and reblog old posts. That's actually very normal. If you add /chrono to the end of a tumblr tab then you can view an

"Spam" liking and reblogging isn't a thing that is a problem. This is invented by people I do not understand. If someone claims this is a problem, they can learn how to turn off or manage their notifications.

The only form of promotional posts that tumblr has is "blaze". There is no ad targeting or any kind of invasions of privacy with blaze. You just get subjected to w/e someone wants to show you. If you want to give tumblr some money to help the company keep going and provided an alternative to twitter, it's not a bad way to do it. You can make people look at cat photos.

Also, we have fun colors here. Plus actual formatting ability. Use it!

People lie on here for fun. Don't accept everything you see at face value, check the reblogs/replies or google something if you're skeptical! Critical thinking is good!

I didn’t get the job.

However, a few weeks later, I was called in to interview with another editor in the same company, and I did get that job. I found out later from the initial editor (the one who didn’t hire me) that he had planned to offer me the job, but since I didn’t follow up with a thank you letter, he assumed I didn’t really want it. He offered the job to another contender–but when he got my letter in the mail shortly after the offer had already been made, he went to HR and gave me a glowing recommendation. It was based on that recommendation that I got called in for the second interview.

So: send an email thank you immediately (same day!) after the interview. If you’re feeling extra, go ahead and send a written one too. OR go immediately to a coffee shop, write the letter, and return to the office and give it to the secretary.
