ok i don’t talk much about this side of my upbringing but. i was raised by someone who, as a professional liar, was great at story telling. at figuring out how to use narrative to craft an image, to build an impression of a world. it comes naturally to me to tell stories that give impressions, that have narrative arcs and seem like they mean something and make sense.

but that’s not what life is. “life is a performance” and “everyone just wants a story so give them what they want” are wrong. life is just life, and you have to make meaning or story if you want any. and when the story’s over and life begins, well, that’s what people don’t want to see.

every time i talk, i have to try not to make it a performance. i have to try not to read narrative into things people say. i have to work to not view people (including myself) as characters. i have to remind myself that life is messy and complicated and can’t be simply fit into a piece of fiction.
