Follow-up
Gerda and the Robber girl from Snow Queen. Resurfacing again to post this. It was inspired by a dear, dear friend. This was my first femslash ship ever, when I was a smol child, I used to read Andersen’s tale and watch the ye olde Soviet cartoon and I just wanted Gerda to stay with the Robber girl and quit searching for Kai, he was a bit of a dick to her anyway.
I absolutely adore the way MDZS treats and talks about the concept of revenge. It says "Yes, getting payback on the things that hurt you is actually a stellar concept. In a vacuum. However, there is no true and quantifiable way to actually equate one evil deed to another, making the entire quest for revenge pointless because you will have no way of knowing when justice was actually met." Xue Yang killed dozens and tormented Xiao Xingchen for years, all for the sake of a lost finger, and still ended up unsatisfied, and all our hero has to say is why didn't you just take his arm and call it a day. Jin Guangyao taking the very neat, methodical approach to eliminating everyone who ever wronged him but by the time he gets there he gets taken out by another revenge seeker before he can even bask in it. Jin Ling wanting so so bad to hate everyone involved in his parents deaths but finding himself utterly unable to because they're all just messed up people and now he has to live with the fact that he's an orphan and that's just that. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian hiding their good deeds from each other because they know it will just complicate everything even more and further muddy who was the wronged party. That one cultivator who goes on a hate filled tirade talking about how he's going to avenge to death of his parents and Wei Wuxian just replying "My life already sucked so bad, what more do you want from me?"
You can never have revenge. The world is too big and messy and you'll never just get the pure, satisfying moment of feeling like all your problems are solved because you harmed someone else. Purely because by the time you get there some unseen factor will be added to the equation and it suddenly won't count.

just because someone can articulate their point better doesn’t make them right, it makes them articulated.
and you aren’t stupid for having trouble articulating yourself.
The problem with giving advice to angry and suffering people is that rather frequently the thing they need to know to improve their position is the last thing they want to hear and not something they have the capacity to internalize or accept
Unfortunate truths you can tell people that would help if they could hear what it means and not just what it sounds like
You were the victim, and it wasn’t fair, but it’s over now. Nobody came to save you, and I’m sorry, but it’s too late for anyone to go back and do it different.
You’re suffering over something that cannot be resolved. You’re allowed to feel angry, or outraged, or betrayed, but there will eventually come a time that you don’t feel that so violently anymore, and you’re going to want to have something good left to go back to.
You can’t make anyone love you the way you need to be loved. That’s how a lot of good things end. Not with a clear sign, something blocking the road that says “do not proceed”, just a splitting of the path that’s still moving somewhat in the same direction.
You can’t fix them. Nothing you can do will fix them. And if they fix themselves, they can’t do it for you- they have to do it for themselves as well, because otherwise a day may come when they’re alone, and as long as they live, they are their only true constant. So you can support, and you can encourage, but the hardest part is up to them. And sometimes they can’t do it even with your help.
Sometimes letting go of someone feels like mourning at their funeral before they’ve died, and every time you see them after it’s like talking to a ghost that doesn’t know it’s dead. Sometimes that happens. You’ll both still wake up tomorrow anyways.
I understand that you’re afraid, and that you’re afraid for good reasons. And I understand that being brave isn’t as easy as just turning that fear off, and you would if you could in a heartbeat. But the thing is, as long as that fear is able to dictate your choices, it will have power over you. If you don’t believe you can try to fight it, if you accept that it will always be in charge, you let the frightening thing stay present in your life. It will exist as long as you stay paralyzed. And that sounds cruel, but it isn’t something anyone can fix for you.
The person you may let yourself become after experiencing the terrible thing may very well grow into a much bigger, much more terrible thing, and someday it will swallow the first terrible thing whole. And all that will be left is something far worse for someone else. And you will not be able to shrink it down by explaining where it came from, because terrible things that are dead and gone are never as terrible as terrible things that are alive right now in front of you.
No matter how much or how little I love you, I still do not have the ability to help you the way you need to be helped. I might be the helper you want, but I am not a helper you can get. If you are to be helped at all, you will need to accept that it will come from someone else.
yknow its interesting how something can impact one demographic in a completely different way than everyone else. in the exorcist when the demon starts speaking in greek, to most people its creepy. but if youre greek and you suddenly start hearing the demon speak perfect fucking greek its genuinely the biggest scare of the movie. you just do not expect to ever hear your language in american movies so it catches you so badly off guard, it feels like the movie is talking directly to you
the first time my dad saw it, it was with his american friends. and when she started speaking greek he turned to one of them and was like "re malaka did you hear that in english?"
i hope we all understand how quintessentially them it is that when yuna asks if shane and ilya have been in love since their rookie season, they both immediately go “no. no no no no no” with disgusted faces on
imagining shane hanging out with his parents and while he's away from his phone doing something with his dad a call comes in. yuna sees this and goes, "shane, someone's calling you!"
and shane says, "who is it?"
"lily!"
"oh." shane immediately sets aside what he's doing and walks over, saying to his mom, "that's ilya."
yuna looks at him in confusion as he picks up his phone. "why is ilya saved as 'lily' in your phone?"
and shane looks at her, away, shrugs as if it's obvious and simply says, "I can't have ilya rozanov saved on my phone, mom" before answering the call with a, "hey, baby" and walking away.
leaving yuna (and david) standing shocked and, once again, shaken at how little they knew about their son and the layers of concealment he's had to operate under for years just to love who he loves.

Alice's adventures in Wonderland ! 🍄🫖🐛
Amina al-Sirafi character of all time. 6 foot tall woman pirate in her 50s who claims she is retired. Jumps at getting on her ship again at the very first chance she gets. Genuinely surprised that a woman she apparently spent 10 years on a boat with would consider her a friend. Married to a chaos god implied to be older than humanity, by accident. Also she introduced him to palm wine and gave him (literally there for the invention of beer) his first hangover. He's her fourth, most hot and also least favourite, husband and she divorced the first two by throwing them off her boat. Buried said chaos demon husband in a wooden chest bound in iron in the literal ocean after he accidentally stole the soul of a crewmate, and also hid his literal daughter from him, successfully, even though he can literally read her mind. Then pulled the literal same trick on him when he was getting annoying 10 years later. Just fucking hates white people (justified). Accidentally becomes a superhuman warrior and wins a favour from an ocean demon. Sets free the imprisoned spirit of the literal star Alderbaran who was imprisoned in a silver wash basin for being a peeping tom. Got fed on by a vampire once. Trans ally. WILL fight your grandmother for you and get you out of a marriage contract. WHO is doing it like her.
idk which one of you recommended that i read the adventures of amina al-sirafi but i am just tickled by every aspect of this story. we already had a lady pirate captain, a prison break, a "we're putting together a team" heist trope, blackmail and mystery, incredibly entertaining team dynamics, etc. etc., and NOW you're telling me i also get a vaguely evil and implied to be very powerful supernatural being who's forced by circumstance to work together with all these weird little humans while, of course, being a huge cunt about it the whole time? girl. i was already seated, but now i'm popping popcorn
Amina: "You are driving me mad."
Dalila: "To be fair, that is an easy task. You're a very temperamental woman."
I love these two.

The women of The adventures of Amina al-Sirafi' by Shannon Chakraborty
If you think Dunya is missing, please finish the book first :)
And If you think Payasam is missing: yes you are right and I am very sorry!
I listened to the audiobook at least 15 times by now!
I really want to draw the men next, but drawing men is not my strongsuit so bear with me!
I was listening to the audiobook again while drawing to remember exactly how these ladies are described and have been reminded that our imagination is often different from what is described. So I had to go over my mental image of some of them hehe:)) still took some artistic liberations of course
was in a painting mood
