#one of the counterparties I work with had abysmal ratings for work/life balance because the entire company was openly hostile about PTO #so now they have mandated 2 week vacations scheduled for each employee #this sounds nice like guaranteed vacation is nice except you don't get to pick when it happens - HR picks it for you #you get informed with less than a month to plan #got assigned a huge project that will completely change the trajectory of your job? doesn't matter. mandated 2 week vacation #and like the absolute most dystopian part is that they all talk about it as a banishment #none of them will admit to each other that sometimes you really do need a 2 week vacation #instead it's like a banishment #it's often talked about as an inconvenience to everyone around the person who has to take the leave #I think the idea was to get people used to the custom of not asking people to work dueing their PTO and to not second guess scheduled PTO #but I really feel like it's done the opposite - now no one takes additional PTO that they planned for themselves

When I visited Chicago, the very first thing to weird me out from the airport was… how almost everywhere had revolving doors.

I’m Australian. Sure, we do have those doors, but the vast majority of places in Sydney are automatic sliding doors or old-fashioned manual push/pulls because we don’t need to block out the cold and wind the same way here.

So every day I experienced a culture clash with something as basic as what doors were normal for me.

Americans who say they don’t have a culture are plagued with defaultism beyond belief. Culture isn’t just made up of costumes and language and the largest stuff, it’s constructed of a billion small things you do every day that you never even consider could be different because that’s just “normal” to your daily life. No one has no culture just because they’re not adhering to the biggest markers they can consciously recognise.
