ik that the response to a lot of criticism of The Long Game comes down to. Well this is a romance novel, and certain things just don't fit into the expectations of that genre. And I do mostly understand and agree with that, but also it makes me think, what's the point of a sequel to a romance novel then? The first book has to have a happy ending, otherwise it's not Genre Romance either, but then what's next? You have to have plot and conflict, so if you're going to introduce new conflicts, I'd still like for it to be thoughtfully done. That's hard to accomplish, I'm sure; there's a reason that Game Changers was already a series with 5 different couples. Same with Bridgerton, with multiple other hockey romance series, I could name so many more.

Sequel or otherwise, I guess I just think it's interesting, and like. inevitable almost, to dissect a plot sort of regardless of genre conventions. I like romance novels, I want them to be interesting, and well written. I want the concept of telling love stories to be taken seriously, I don't like when authors churn out novel after novel with little editing. If all this means is we talk about plot and then come to the conclusion that alternatives don't make sense for Romance, then so be it I guess. At least we talked about it at all. Or maybe readers and publishers alike should be more open to tough topics being discussed within Romance

thinking about shane and ilya swimming at the cottage. they’re only out about waist deep. ilya goes under and when he comes up, shane is just standing there with his hands out in the shape of a cup. so of course he’s confused “what are you doing?” shane tips his hands a little so he can see there’s a ladybug on his palm “he needs to dry off.”

so now they’re just wading in the water and talking with shane’s left hand high above the lake surface with a ladybug crawling around on it. about five minutes past and suddenly the ladybug flies away and shane smiles like “there you go.” “finally.” ilya says before jumping on top of shane and tackling him into the water because five minutes is excruciatingly long when you are holding back a tidal wave of cuteness aggression.
