the fact that shane loves and likes his family makes his relationship with ilya more complex imo. they miscommunicate about so much of ilya's family stuff because their communication styles do not mesh and they have to work towards that, certainly. but also because shane has never had to live with family he loves deeply but does not like, or family that he fears only love him conditionally (see: ilya's at-times-solely transactional relationship with alexei). this difference between them is vital as a point of contrast and as a motivation for very natural conflict.
