I love every exploration of why Maglor ultimately submits to Maedhros' will after briefly considering doing the right thing for a whole two hot minutes; whether it's Maglor still acting as Maedhros' vassal, or more personal reflections on their relationship (affection that borders on codependency; Maglor's guilt, sometimes coupled with manipulation on Maedhros' part) I find all of it compelling. But also I feel like the simplest answer lies with Maglor himself aka confronting the implications of giving up the Silmaril for good and what that would mean for him/them. It would entail returning to Valinor and facing the consequences - not merely as a vague, self-centered horror he has been part of but in relation to the people he has wronged. Which grants Maglor more autonomy in that moment as his choice is not simply one of submission to Maedhros but a *conscious*, *personal* refusal to confront what repentance would truly require. BUT. If the blame cannot be shifted onto external pressure or another's will, those 2 fleeting minutes of repentance lose some of their weight.

the saeros episode is an all-time hit because on the surface túrin has not yet suffered enough to be acting this unhinged. like it’s a level of escalation that is really shocking so early in his character arc and seems to exist to demonstrate how destructive this guy can be. like battle to the death or not túrin’s behaviour is far too drawn out to be dismissed as a momentary flare of temper - what he does to saeros is an extended exercise in cruelty and humiliation

‘While bats can only sense the outer shapes and textures of their targets, dolphins can peer inside theirs. If a dolphin echolocates on you, it will perceive your lungs and your skeleton. It can likely sense shrapnel in war veterans and fetuses in pregnant women. It can pick out the air-filled swim bladders that allow fish, their main prey, to control their buoyancy.

Cetacean echolocation is one of those things that boggles your mind once you really start to think about the implications. They can see each others' hearts beating fast with fear or excitement. They can see if another dolphin is healthy, or pregnant; how the fetus is doing; if they have ingested debris. Their echolocation is also incredibly precise: a bottlenose dolphin could discriminate between cilinders differing in wall thickness by just 0.23 mm (0.009 inch) from 8 meters away!! And they certainly notice when something is off.
