Hanging out with people will make you remember you're the crazy woke friend for like. not wanting to shop at shien
by Danilo Faria
krystal, kai and taemin for w magazine 2015
Cosmic horror story about the protagonist being driven mad by having forbidden knowledge seared into their mind in which it gradually becomes clear that the protagonist is a housecat and the terrible gnosis that renders even their most familiar intimacies alien to them is the ability to do first grade math.
They have difficulty functioning in their daily life because they're constantly seeing maddening patterns beyond mundane perception, but those patterns are merely the product of being able to count higher than three. All forgetting to eat as they obsessively count the pieces of dry kibble in their bowl.

Pssst...hey... Alfred can't be "good" if Bruce is "bad"
If Bruce is written as abusive and obsessed with "the mission," then logistically, ya gotta write Alfred as an enabler/accessory to the abuse.
It is impossible for Alfred to be there throughout all Robins, be first witness for multiple years with multiple children "suffering" and still have the kids be like: "Oh well, Alfred is still an angel, though." They would've known he hadn't helped them.
Imagine a building is on fire, and someone just stands there and watches it. They didn't start it, but they also don't try to put it out. They don't help anyone get out. They don't even bother calling for help. Yet, they still get a medal for their bravery??
There would only be 2 ways that Alfred could be seen as a "loving grandfather" if he
1. Outright stops Bruce by confronting him directly or getting the kids out from the first sign of abuse.
2. If Bruce is at least a somewhat decent father. Sure, he can make mistakes, and he can fumble sometimes. But Bruce can not be actively harmful to the kids for years without Alfred being aware and choosing to leave the kids to fend for themselves.
Alfred would have to be written as a non questions asked, 100% dedicated to only a "True Wanye" kind of butler. He would have to see the kids as not real Wayne's to allow an abusive Bruce to continuously harm them. The kids would know this and hate BOTH of them.
This is something I've been thinking about a lot lately. I've always had complicated feelings about Alfred as a character and I like meta that explores that Alfred is complicit in the abuse but having the kids see him as a "loving grandfather" does not strike me as out of place. Especially since Alfred has been shown in the "caretaker" role a decent amount. Alfred patches their injuries, Alfred makes them food, etc.
Even if the kids identified Bruce and hated him for it, their feelings for Alfred would be a lot harder to unpack. Alfred was nice to them, Alfred took care of them. Maybe once Alfred even said something to Bruce about him being to harsh and Bruce stormed off, and the kids latched onto that idea that Alfred could be the savior. If they were good enough, Alfred would protect them.
I think in order for the kids to stick around Bruce for so long, part of them had to believe they deserved it. So of course Alfred didn't save them all the time, because often they deserved it. And that Alfred didn't punish them as harshly as Bruce did even when the "deserved" it, would contribute to their seeing Alfred as a benevolent figure.
They might have also seen Bruce lash out at Alfred. Bruce has done that in the comics before, and if the kids saw that, they might subconsciously think of Alfred as another victim. Of course Alfred couldn't protect them from Bruce. Alfred wasn't trained the way the kids were, he's not as strong as Bruce. Expecting Alfred to protect them would be unreasonable in their eyes.
Of course, it's not impossible for the kids to hate Alfred as much as Bruce and I love exploring that idea, but it takes a lot to unpack abuse and when you can't pick out a moment Alfred hit you or threatened you, it makes it a lot harder to identify what he did as abusive. They would probably see Alfred in comparison to Bruce and see that Alfred wasn't like that, so the logical explanation would say that he wasn't abusive (which is wrong, but a reasonable conclusion for them to come to)

She’s definitely spoiling her dinner.

This post has been sitting in my drafts for 4 years. Thank you @ihatebrainstorm for making this joke possible.
the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be apart of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.
interlocking fingers during the pin. holding hands during the pin. is driving me insane
I don’t even go here but this is bout to make me fill out an enrollment form and show up with my lisa frank trapper keeper and pencil case.
I just started Palia this week and I'm only 3 temples in and the protagonist is already making me so sad (/pos). It's been what, 10k years? That means that, depending on how you play and who you play with I suppose, they have nothing. Their family? Dust and ash with likely no tombstone. Childhood home? Belongings? Eaten away by time. No reminders. No history. They might as well have just been born, because there's no proof of their previous life. Imagine not being able to mourn your world because you somehow exist so long after it ended. Imagine never being able to say goodbye to anything you loved. Your family, your friends, even the people you would walk by on the street every day. Do they even know what happened to you? Do they know you still persist? Did they, by some miracle, make it out onto the other side somewhere else in the world? Should you even get your hopes up and risk suffering a second death of the soul? You have nothing and are from nowhere. You're an anomaly. You're an extinct species in a world that has long since moved on from your kind. You are human, and you are so very alone.
