in Melbourne, Australia they set up a system (the Urban Forest) where there was a unique email address associated with every single street & park tree in Melbourne & surrounding areas (which is 70K+ trees). they’re all mapped and you can access this data visually, with all the trees colour-coded by age and genus (which is cool as hell actually)

now the IDEA was that if you saw damage to that tree, or signs of disease or whatever, you could email that address and the city would know where to go check.

however IN PRACTICE people have been emailing the trees directly to compliment them on their beauty, thank them for their shade, and send well-wishes and personal news. like this isn’t something that happens on the side, this has ended up being probably the primary use for this system; people really act like the trees themselves are reading the emails, and I kind of love it.
