Now that everyone has had had their dream vacation it is now time to return to that dream job.

It could be the job that you wish you had when you are stuck in a boring meeting at the job you ended up getting just because you had to.

There is the job that you take because it is something that you always wanted to do after a career doing what you had to do.

Meet Jamie Jason, D.V.M.

Doc JJ, as her friends call her, has been serving the SW Portland, Oregon exurbs for almost forty years. She believes, as all veterinarians do (because it’s in their professional oath), that she “speaks for those who have no voice.” Given her geographical location, her practice includes a wide variety of domesticated companions

as well as many less domesticated animals in need of medical care.

And sometimes she needs to assist our wilder animal friends.

Twice a week she drives to Corvallis, OR--home of the Oregon State University School of Veterinary Medicine--where she serves as an adjunct faculty member.

And she regularly shares her wisdom at regional and national AVMA meetings.

She truly loves all creatures, great and small.

Alyssa, a dream of the open sea

As a little girl, I was already climbing aboard my uncle's sailboat, clutching the railing, salty wind full in my face. I understood nothing about sails or knots, but I knew one thing:

someday,I would be a skipper and cross the oceans.

That dream never left me, and even today, I close my eyes and imagine it.

I picture myself at the helm, the wind picking up, the boat heeling beneath my feet. Hair streaming in the wind, I'd scan the horizon, trimming each line with precision. I believe it's in those moments of pure speed that I would finally feel like I belong.

I also dream of those graceful mornings, when the sea turns to glass. A pod of dolphins would cross our path near the rocky coastline, and I'd hold the wheel almost without thinking, simply in awe of a sight few people ever get to witness so closely.

But being a skipper, in my imagination, also means facing the ocean at its rawest. Under a sky split by lightning, rain lashing my face, I'd have to stay focused, clear-headed, never letting go of the helm. I often wonder if I'd have that kind of courage, when the day came.

And then there are those suspended moments I love to imagine before falling asleep: anchored in a quiet cove, a book resting beside me, dolphins playing near the hull. It's still only a dream, and it probably always will be.

Because my real sea is the family business I run with my sister Chacha. And in the end, it's not so different from that imaginary sailboat. There are days of flat calm, when everything moves forward without effort. There are storms, hard decisions to make while holding a steady course. There are breakdowns, the setbacks you never see coming and have to repair without ever drifting off track. And then there are those moments of pure satisfaction, when you look back at the distance covered and know, without a doubt, that you're exactly where you're meant to be.

My dream of being a skipper will stay a dream. But running this company — that might just be the finest voyage of all.
