The tragedy of ATLA is that none of these kids got to be kids. Our main plot is a bunch of kids stop a 100 year war. You can’t have kids in war without considering the tragedy that forced them there.

Aang given moral responsibility over the whole world and again over his whole culture as the last air nomad and air bender. Katara mirroring this a little as the last water bender of her tribe and with the responsibility of living a life that was worth her mother’s sacrifice. Sokka being left behind as the “only protector” of his tribe by his dad’s own words and trying to fill every role needed as the eldest. Toph never feeling seen or trusted by her parents, raises herself and has almost too much self reliance, struggling to have anyone take any responsibility for her. Zuko having experienced the punishment he had for showing vulnerability(not fighting his dad) is also too self reliant and at the start dehumanizes himself constantly in an attempt to be more “mature” in his father’s eyes. He goes on to take the burden of the fire nation’s actions.
