Genuinely curious: How does one tell the difference between blaccent as paying homage with a stylistic choice vs. Black appropriation? Thanks in advance for any clarification!
Well first, saying "blaccent" is derogatory. I was not being kind when I said they were performing the song in blaccent. Using a blaccent- pretending to speak AAVE or in a "Black" way in a way you usually don't in order to gain popularity and spice in your delivery- is always going to be appropriation.
If you can turn that accent off when it's time to "be respectable" or talk to "normal people", you're just putting on my literal voice as a costume. If you think hearing a Black person speak AAVE is classless, stupid, less intelligent, or somehow tougher, but enjoy it when it's coming out of the mouth of someone nonblack, it will always be appropriation and disrespectful.
The only way you're going to show you're "paying homage" is by the REST of your behavior being respectful. Antiracism is constant behavior, not just one act on a checklist. Are there Black musicians you've openly cited inspiration from? Are there Black people credited in your music or videos? Are there even any Black people of importance in your life or in your circle? Do you even know any Black people? Have you ever featured a Black artist and supported them openly, not just for diversity clicks?
Or are you just benefitting from putting on my voice and my art while distancing yourself from Black people as a whole? Are you benefitting from using the way I speak to make money and fame, while I have to code switch in certain environments because using my dialect is seen as unprofessional?
