the reason why american english speakers hear “r”s in australian english speech when there aren’t any is actually sooo interesting but no one wants to hear me talk at length about diphthongs and auditory illusions, they just wanna say naurrrrr
so (most) american accents are rhotic, meaning if there’s an r in a word it’ll be pronounced no matter what - australian english is a non rhotic accent, meaning r’s are not pronounced in some situations (there’s rules, you can look them up if you care). but basically this means rhotic speakers are very used to saying and hearing robust “r”/[ɹ] sounds in speech, and subconsciously expect to hear these sounds with other people. remember this.
anywayyy - people love to go “you’re saying an R but you don’t realise!” sorryyy, there is objectively no r sound in “no” when said australianly. what’s actually happening is australians are saying “nao” [nəʉ], the vowel is moving from a wideish neutral position [ə], into a closed position [ʉ]. for an [ɹ] to be made, the tongue has to move towards the top of the mouth, which just doesn’t happen, it goes to the bottom after [n] and stops moving.
so what’s really happening is an auditory hallucination. the movement of the lips in “ao”/ [əʉ] mimics some of the qualities of [ɹ], and if you speak a rhotic dialect of english your brain is very used to hearing [ɹ], and assumes that that’s what that sound is. don’t believe me? go up to an australian and ask to put your fingers in their mouth 👍
soooo you’re not crazy, they are actually saying “drawring” 😀. it happens in “law and order” too (which is slightly easier to explain the mechanics of so i’m doing that, but it’s the same thing)
so in aus english the phrase is phonetically [lo:ɹndo:də] but if you say “law” and “and order” seperatly, theres no [ɹ]. tldr the tongue is in a low anterior position with the tongue sort of bunched up at the back for [o:], and as it moves diagonally into position for [n] it naturally passes through the location of where [ɹ] is verbalised, while also retaining the tongue posture of [o:], which is similar to [ɹ]. and in normal speech your vocal chords won’t switch off for something so small unless it’s very important, so the phantom r gets verbalised
i got an american friend to say it for me and - at least in my sample size of 1 -the vowel in the american pronunciation of “law” is more centred in the mouth: so you get an up and down motion with the tongue as opposed to a diagonal one, meaning no phantom R. Linguistics Is Just So Fun

wish there was an easy and normal way to say “I’m not as sane as you probably assume i am, and when you can see it, will you still try to love me?”
just in case this spreads: i literally mean “not sane” here. I’m not joking about how goofy i am. I mean i have behaviors and symptoms and histories that most people don’t- and ones that have been considered insane. Will you still love me when i tell you I hear things sometimes? Will you still love me when you know I’ve attempted suicide multiple times? Will you still love me when I obsess over things and break down often and can’t promise you i can always be happy?
The thing about Rocky Horror is that it's very clearly about transmisogyny, but made by someone who clearly has a fair amount of internalized transphobia, and like, I think other transfems absolutely have a right to dislike it because you can feel that internalized transphobia in the art. It is part of it.
But I do also think it's kinda ridiculous to treat it like it's Psycho or Silence of the Lambs or something when it's very clearly about the ways in which society uses trans femmes for sexual exploration and then rejects their humanity and it's fundamentally a project of reclamation of the monstrous trans woman archetype.
And I honestly think part of it is that people don't see it in terms of the historical context, not just of ideas about gender and sexuality, but also the context of the genre that it's working in. Because it's very much using the intertwined history of queerness and horror and sci-fi b movies. I actually think the best modern analog today for RHPS is The People's Joker. Rocky Horror is using B movies the same way that TPJ uses Batman mythos to tell a story about the way that society villainizes trans women and the messy ways in which we have to deal with that.
Again, I'm not saying that anyone has to love the movie because, yeah, there is transmisogyny there. But I do think it's ahistorical and just plain bad media literacy to act like it's not also engaging with the experience of transmisogyny as art.

For the last goddamn time...
"Kill your darlings" means "if something is holding you back, get rid of it, even if it sounds pretty."
That's it! That's all it means! It means if you're stuck and stalled out on your story and you could fix the whole block by removing something but you're avoiding removing that thing because it's good, you remove that thing. That's the darling.
It does NOT mean
That you have to get rid of your self-indulgent writing
That you should delete something just because you like it (?wtf?)
That you need to kill off characters (??? what)
That you have to pare your story down to the absolute bare bones
That you have to delete anything whatsoever if you don't want to
The POINT is that you STOP FEELING GUILTY for throwing out good writing that isn't SERVING THE STORY.
The POINT is that you don't get so HUNG UP on the details that you lose sight of the BIG PICTURE.
Good grief....
Also, you don't have to like, delete it from existence. Keep a second document full of the Darlings. You never know when you'll need it later.
yes, your killed darlings are ripe for rebirth
compost your darlings
recycle your darlings
Darlings who don't fit this narrative go into the use later folder

literally the other day i saw a compilation of Black women in different styles of jeans. it was a photoset of women in jeans. so, as you might imagine, clothed, a fashion photoset, and it was marked "mature." this is consistent and I am by no means the first person to say so. Black users, especially women, on here have been saying for the last decade that this website repeatedly targets Black users and content. it's so blatant & consistent it boggles the fucking mind. it's crazy people now say "the white website" bc it didn't used to be. like so much of the internet, so much of the humor & trends & top content on this site was shaped by Black people but they got chased the fuck off by other users AND staff. and it just keeps going.

i hate how much people care about their ships being "canon" now. spirk fans didn't publish zines full of fanfics in the 70s only for modern fandom to grovel at the knees of corporations and beg for things to be canon. use your imaginations, don't allow billionaires to think for you.

Haven't seen any posts on it yet but Nepal just had some of the most devastating flash floods. The videos they showed on TV looked like a mini tsunami wiping away buildings and bridges. More than several hundred were declared missing, including Indian, American and European tourists and the Nepali, and almost 50 people are dead. I hope they find the missing people, and if anyone is aware of any specific news to spread or ways to help, please share. Bihar and UP received alerts, please be careful over there.
The Nepal Tourism Board has issued emergency contact numbers for assistance: 1234 (toll-free), 1144 (hotline) and Tourist Police at 9851289445.
You can read more about it here(source), here, and here.
The Red Cross, All Hands and Hearts, and Catholic Relief Services are accepting help for relief work.
The Nepali Prime Minister's Disaster Relief fund has also been set up to accept direct transfers but I can't find the details yet.
ETA: There is this Instagram post about the PM Relief Fund. Many thanks to @inexhaustible-sources-of-magic for finding it!
I was thinking about Dolly Parton and remembered something about her.
In 2020 I worked a job collecting medical record for insurance companies. It was Covid and there were many, many medical offices that were grieving and angry. It wasn't a fun job most of the time.
But one day I called a hospital in Tennessee. I was supposed to collect records for a NICU patient and their mama. I got to records and the woman in charge of records said there must be a mistake. They never worked with insurance with maternity or neonatal patients because of Dolly.
I asked what she meant and she told me, "Well, Miss Dolly has us send her the bills for any new mothers and their babies, especially if they spend time in the NICU. She never has anyone apply or anything, she just has us send her any bill for those families and she pays them, no matter how big."
I was stunned. I clarified, "Dolly? Dolly Parton?"
"Yes, ma'am! Dolly's been paying those bills since at least 1999 and so we just don't work with insurance here. It's why there's a mural of her in the maternity ward."
I cried harder that day than any other day during the height if the pandemic. For the first time that year it wasn't grief fueling my tears, it was a hope so deep that it hurt to contain it. When Dolly gave a million dollars for vaccine development I just nodded. Made sense to me. That's simply who she was. She saw a need and, if it was in her power, she met it. She loved humanity in a way that didn't require anything back. It was never a question of whether or not it was her responsibility, she just stepped forward and did what needed doing.
I loved Dolly Parton in the same way I loved Mr Rogers. Steve Irwin. Bob Ross. She shaped who I am with her kindness and she was a core part of my world for my entire life.
There has never been anyone like Dolly Parton before. It is my privilege to have lived in a world with her and I will do everything I can to make sure that there are plenty of people like her from here on.
