cystic fibrosis is considered a chronic illness which impairs an individual’s respiratory function. this can have drastic effects on quality of life. mere decades ago, it was considered a “childhood illness.” that’s because only recently have we figured out how to get patients to live to adulthood. this is achieved through medication and surgery. in a post industrial world, cystic fibrosis is a childhood disease again.

i am not disabled. i am, however, slightly more prone than the average person to getting cuticle infections. this means that every once in a while, i notice that one of my fingers or toes is slightly red and swollen on one side. when this happens, i go into my bathroom, clean the area, and get a small squeeze bottle from my medicine cabinet. this bottle says “mupirocin” on the side. i apply it to the area, put a bandaid on, and repeat every morning and evening until it goes away—usually not more than a week.

Modern medicine and specialized medicine is so incredibly important!!! My mother was the first woman on her side of the family to make it to 50. Why? Because asthma medication was invented. Every other woman had died before 50 because of asthma. And, the asthma has still continued to pass on genetically, so my sister and I have it, both pretty severely. Some special herbs are not going to replace inhalant medication for asthma. We already know that doesn’t work!

Never mind even more specialized medical fields, like endocrinology, for example! Even with what we have now we can’t figure out why my entire adrenal system shut down, but we’ve been able to treat it enough that I’m alive. I’d be so dead without specialized medicine and pharmaceuticals, dead a million times over.

And yeah, the “but you’re dying now under this system!” isn’t the rebuttal they think it is. Yeah, we are, but that doesn’t mean I want to have my chances of death increased and be seen as a reasonable expense to get a new system! These people act like the only options are to not do anything at all about today’s issue (which I’ve been accused of saying through this post, even though I never did), or anarchy and revolution. There are more than 2 options here! Social reform doesn’t have to be a full, violent uprising where us disabled people are continued to be seen as worthless.

I am not an expendable sacrifice. No one else is either. Disabled people are people deserving of respect, and yet we’re always silenced and told to shut up about our issues. We can’t even discuss our issues without people telling us to be quiet and that it’s not a big deal.

“Oh, it’s okay because we’re helping you!” What? So do you have the mindset of “mercy killing”? A lot of us are lost to mercy killing, and this idea of us being okay to kill and sacrifice seems to stem from the same ideology.

You’re not helping people if you’re willing to commit genocide, and right now it doesn’t matter that this probably won’t happen. What matters is that you have deep-rooted ideas of disabled people as expendable and worthless. You’re still falling for the capitalistic rhetoric of disabled people being useless, and thus having no value. Changing how you think of disabled people and your behavior towards them is what’s important here, but so many of you are so bloodthirsty you can’t even see it, and so bulldoze over us seeking a future that probably won’t happen.

We want action towards social reform, not a lethal injection labeled as a favor. But apparently not wanting to die (horribly, I might add, because deaths from disease and med withdrawals are just suffering) is unreasonable and we should shut up and be grateful.

Okay, was waiting on answering this one because I wanted to pick something interesting.

And I have decided on Phineas and Ferb, which comes down to three choices for me: Ferb, Lawrence Fletcher, and Perry.

Ferb because he’s unpredictable like that, but also ready for anything at a moment’s notice.

Lawrence because he’s just that gotdamn weird. He did raise Phineas, Ferb, and Candace, after all!

And then, well, Perry’s a secret agent, so that one was obvious.

I keep telling myself I’m going to stop responding on this post, but these tags are so good and correct. Exactly. Exactly that. If people can’t do community support now, then what the hell makes them think it’s going to happen then?

And what about incredibly specialized medicine fields??? The community herb garden is not going to make my endocrine system work! Or my asthma meds! The advances we’ve made in medicine are so vitally important! What these people want would demolish those.

Yes, the systems we currently live under are hurting us minority communities, but there has to be a better way to have change than burning it all to the ground. Minority communities are going to be hurt and affected so badly by those tactics and ideals.
