“Sounds like you might be getting your sheep fuzz trimmed then?” Come to think of it, it wasn’t like anyone could actually see… Sou’s ears or jawline even sometimes. As a campus policeman, it was nice to see one of the students get something that actually was a functional prize. As someone who personally knew Sou, well, that just gave him a chance to be another thorn in the student’s side for the time being.

“You sure it’s warm enough for you to do that? Wahaha, wouldn’t wanna see a repeat of that parka fiasco from the beginning of the year.”

“Sheep fuzz?!” What kind of way to describe his hair was that?! Man, he really was just a joke to that officer, wasn’t he? Maybe he didn’t make the best figure back in the gym the other day, but that still was kind of a belittling remark nonetheless! 

“Ahaha, you really are a friendly campus policeman... for you to worry about me being cold like that!” The way he said that thrived of sarcasm. “I’ll know what I’m doing though, I’m an adult, you know!” Keiji was right though, he wouldn’t cut it much shorter, because... well, it really would be cold. It was nice to have his hair and beanie to protect his ears like that... but it’s not like anyone else needed to know that!!

“Ah, I actually won something from the raffle. So it’s a $30 gift card to Luciole, huh?” That was that hair dresser place, wasn’t it. Honestly, it did surprise him that he did win anything at all, since he usually wasn’t really the lucky type. And getting his hair trimmed for free, sure was better than nothing at all! How unusual convenient things turned out for him for once!

“You didn’t do anything, huh?” Sou wasn’t really the type of person to make close friends in class. Or, anywhere, really. However, he had to communicate with his classmates here and there for group projects. And it seems like Tenko here, forgot the responsibility he was carrying with him here!

“M-miss Nico, please!” Maybe the comment about her short stature wasn’t really necessary. Sure, it was an easy thing to say, if a girl of her height asks him to get something from the library, that she couldn’t even reach with a ladder, but he should have known better! Still, he did climb up here to get the book she asked for after all, couldn’t she be a little more appreciate that fact? Never mind, she did seem like a rather brat kind of girl to him from the start…

“S-shut up!” Was all he got out in between his heavy breathing. He felt like no matter how hard he tried to calm down, he couldn’t get any air inside of his lungs. And that just because he tried… to lift some weights. Yes, who knows how any of this happened, but Sou somehow really ended up going to the gym with this one weird and suspicious looking campus officer. “I… I just am not feeling that well today. It was an exhausting week so far…!”

What was even the deal with Keiji’s muscles? Did he take steroids? It was hard to imagine, that he’d look like that, only from visiting this terrible place a few times a week. God, failing in front of a guy like him, really was one of the most embarrassed things he could imagine. Truly, his pride was hurt in this moment… And Keiji chuckling already only made all of this worse!

Why did he even end up here in the first place?! Being active never was anything he was skilled at. He was horrible at it, actually. Somehow though, he couldn’t help but feel envious of how manly other guys with… stronger bodies did look. Was he jealous? Did he try to impress someone? Why should he care about any of this again? 

He really should have thought more about it before coming here to his demise.

Shouko is still far too invested in the return of her wallet that she fails to realize that the kind stranger is attempting to initiate small talk with her. But as soon as she looks up at him and realizes that he’s seemingly waiting for an answer, she flinches in surprise and quickly pulls her phone out from her pocket. 

It doesn’t take her longer than a minute to type down exactly what she needs to say in every first encounter she finds herself walking into. She breathes in with a nervous rise of her shoulders before finally presenting the screen of her phone to him.

❝Thank you so much for returning my wallet and I will forever be grateful! I was born with hearing impairment which is why I’m using my phone to communicate. I would love to reward you for your act of kindness though!❞ 

“Ah... er...” At first Sou thought, that the girl tried to convey a private message when showing him her phone, but once he read what she wrote, it made sense why she used this kind of communication. Truth to be told, he never had met anyone with a hearing impairment before (probably because he barely left the house), so he wasn’t sure what the right way to react to this was.

For starters though, he tried to speak more slow and clearly: “Um... Can you understand me, or would you prefer if I’d use my phone as well?” Maybe it really would be easier to text in that case. He didn’t want to make her feel uncomfortable though. Man... he really was glad that he could return her the wallet now, it seemed like she has to deal already with more than enough in her daily life.

Before he decided to talk more, he grabbed for his own phone, and started to type a message  for her as well. Even if she could understand what he was saying, it must be hard to hear him clearly with all those people around them. Hopefully she wouldn’t mind. Once he was done typing, he showed his phone screen to her, as she did before. 

Why didn’t the other appear more excited when they were able to enter the library? It was a bit confusing, but Joe just assumed it was exhaustion. It was pretty early after all, maybe Joe had felt more energy due to the time pressure of printing. Still, whoever thought it was a good idea to delay opening the library must be out of their mind, it’s like they’re asking to put university students under an even more time crunch! 

As they both entered the library, Joe quickly ran through his mind if he had everything on the assignment so it could be printed and get a decent grade. Cover page? Yep, Bibliography? Yeah, not entirely sure about the formatting though. Page numbers? They should be one there. That seemed like it should be all! 

“You’re right! I’m Joe Tazuna, an education major!” Computer science? Whoa, he must be pretty smart then. They surely would’ve been able to sneak in another route then if that girl hadn’t walked out. “Hey, you think you could help me print this before you go? It’s better than me running around the library searching for you, I know it’s going to have some issue. I can grab your book as a thanks!” Knowing that printers can smell fear, Joe thought that this would work better. 

“An education major? Interesting...” He could see that! Besides his gaudy looks, Joe seemed like a pretty nice guy. At least from what he could tell from now. Of course, Sou wasn’t a person that thinks you could trust any nice seeming person that he met, but something about him did seem really... friendly. 

Just when the teal haired guy was ready to part ways for good (especially before Joe would understand his failure with the door from before), the other stopped him and asked him to accompany him some longer time. Hah, he gets it, printer could be scary if you were in a hurry. Honestly speaking though, he’d rather mind his own business and get the book he needed right away, but somehow...

“Ahaha, that’s a surprisingly expensive brand for ‘obligation chocolate’, don’t you think so, miss Lili?” Actually, his smug grin about this was more for show than anything else. This was a first, for someone giving him anything on this kind of holiday. Valentine’s day wasn’t anything he’d usually give any attention to until now. (Or he desperately tried to ignore it, because he never had anything to do with it…)

The other confusing part, next to actually getting chocolate from a girl this year, was how Lili got to those expensive things all the time. Were her parents rich and spoiled her or something?! He maybe should ask her more about her background, then he somehow had a feeling as if she didn’t even realize how pricey the stuff was, that she has given to him until now… Man, she really seemed sheltered, huh? Probably even more than him. That made him kind of curious, but… now was not the time to break his head over this. 

“Actually though… I can’t eat that much chocolate all by myself at once. If you don’t have any other plans, do you want to come inside to get some tea and…share it? It should be fine, since it’s just chocolate between neighbors anyway, right?” 

“Kiwis? Ah, not that I know of. Though, it’s been a while since I’ve had any.” Weren’t they kind of bitter? Ugh, he wasn’t used to eating that healthy. But if Lili already invited him like that, it would be rude to refuse, right? Eating fruits together with her, didn’t sound that bad. Not that he’s gonna tell her that though.

“Ah, uh… it’s no big deal, but some other student I helped out the other day with a computer virus, actually bought me lunch the day after. That was pretty considerate of them, even if it was just a quick fix on my side.”

It was really hard to answer some questions, without always saying that he spends time on his computer. Damn it, what else does he do in his free time? He has to think… “I er… Like to read… drinking tea and taking naps is pretty relaxing too and helps to come down after an eventful day.”

“Please don’t tell me you’re asking me that, because you want to try to cook something again? If so, please, just don’t.” He didn’t want for anything to go up in flames, and really… He was even more concerned about her own safety if she enters any kitchen, but it’s not like he’d tell her that. “Ah, but to answer your question more seriously. I’m not sure if it’s an allergy, but my stomach doesn’t work too well with fish… And I also tend to get some hay fever in spring… Ah, if it gets warmer there’s insect bites too… I’m not good with any of these kind of things, if that answers your question.”

“Let me guess, you’re asking this because of my scarf and beanie, yeah? Ahaha, er…” Well she was right, he does get cold pretty easily. “I usually sleep with one blanket, but if it’s really cold, it’s normal to use two, isn’t it?” He’d probably use even more, if there wouldn’t be the heat of his laptop warming him up too. “I have a twin sized bed, but it’s more than enough for one person. And if I’m really tired… I guess I can nap in pretty uncommon places. But that’s not that unusual, is it?”

12. Name something that you like that you’re embarrassed about

Only two things come to mind. One was his huge interest in computers in general. Coding, scripting… hacking… All of that was super interesting to him. There was a reason why he picked his major. But that was better a thing that he wouldn’t mention in front of Keiji. Guess he has to admit the other embarrassing thing… 

“I… er… guess I like to spend my time pretty much just indoors. There’s always a lot to do. Be it chores, or papers or…” A pause and a troubled expression on his face, because he already didn’t know what else to say. “Ngh, alright, I admit… I spend most of my time on my computer… pretty much.”

7. Talk about the last argument you’ve had with someone. What was it about?

“Ah, that was with a fine arts major here. He got mad at me because I closed a… um, let’s say suggestive ad on his laptop. Apparently he wanted to sketch the lady before I did that, but those ads were loud and… really, who wants to keep an ad up on their display?!  I just couldn’t understand!”

“Ahaha! What an amusing question. You really think I have some annoying habits like that, mister campus officer?” He sure did have them. He was pretty stubborn about things, maybe sometimes even a little arrogant. He didn’t have too much contact to others, but if he did, he does admit that it mostly ends up in an argument.
