Dude Like What

I don't know who needs to hear this but you've probably got vegetables in your fridge that are starting to go a little off so you should probably plan on making a frittata or a pot of soup in the next couple days.

I don't know who needs to hear this but almost every bit of fresh produce you've got that might be about to go off can likely be safely frozen for use later if you want to keep it, and that the amount of waste generated by consumers is a tiny portion of food waste generally and you're not a bad or wasteful person if you forgot your veggies or you weren't feeling well enough to cook.

This post is almost a year old and my favorite thing about it is that it is still circulating and periodically someone will tag it #MY PARSNIPS or some other forgotten vegetable and I get a tiny little snapshot of harried people living their lives and making dinner.

This is also an example of picking One Thing and putting most of your Better The World efforts there. We have so many different important issues to care about and act toward, and it’s tempting to try and do a Little for Many Things - and I’m not saying that little bits of effort don’t add up! They do. But often you’ll make a bigger impact (and possibly have less compassion/activist fatigue) if you direct the majority of your efforts toward one or two things.

y’all better hype this up because this is BIG and is evidence that the berlin patient wasn’t a fluke, and this could revolutionize medicine (there’s already cases of cancers where methods similar to these have worked), and while you’re at it, please join a bone marrow registry!! (especially poc bc these therapies usually only have been done on white patients due to genetic similarities, and the more poc we get in registries the more access poc patients can have to this for cancers, SSS, etc)

“i used to live there” is such a sad phrase. seeing places u used to live in is an odd thing. It’s like ‘i know where the best hiding place is in there. my bedroom was the one directly to the left as you walk in. i took my first steps on that flooring. i used to play in that yard with my grandma. she died two years ago. that was the only place i ever knew. those walls contain all of my childhood memories. i can no longer go there, but i know every corner like the back of my hand.’

This is what happens when you make a neat little victim box in your mental scaffolding and reject anyone who doesn't look like they belong in the box out of hand--you end up denying people who suffered centuries long oppression and genocide in a fit of smug, self-righteous, historically inaccurate pique and outing yourself as ignorant to the whole Internet.

I think these people would shit themselves if they learned how many ethnicities Russia/USSR has colonized

Or how many China has colonized

In a strange turn of events, it wasn’t skin color that made some people oppress others; it was access to power and a willingness to use it callously for their own good, with no regard for the suffering of anyone except their own.

It is always, ALWAYS about power and who can access it.

Let’s stop applying American race relations (read: white vs poc) to every historical conflict. The take “the Irish weren’t colonized or oppressed” only makes sense if you look at the history with an American lens where “white” = superior. Which is only a (literally) skin deep analysis of absolutely no substance.

Also let's stop thinking that American race relations boil down as simply to "white vs poc" because the concept of what counts as white is nowhere near as clear-cut through history as people think.
