The older I get the more I realize that actually a lot of the time in media the insistence that a relationship between two fictional characters is actually just a deep complicated friendship was NOT bullshit/cope in the face of shipper accusations. Because I keep finding myself in deep and beautiful but complex friendships and I realize now that once you meet your romantic life partner the world of these long term profound friendships sort of presents itself to you & there's way more there than I ever thought possible...Like it IS sort of the number one form of new relationship you face in your adult life. At a poetry reading the other day one of the readers was talking about this and about how much interprojection and like, keeping pace of life and seeing your friends as an extension of yourself happens in later life. And it had me like...wow

with age, the thing I value most in writers or commentators or critics or anyone with an opinion about anything is not so much novelty or even correctness but a quality I have trouble putting a name to. one way of putting it would be a sort of thoroughgoing conscientiousness: I am impatient now with anyone who I think isn't actually doing the reading in full, or isn't thinking fully about what they're saying. vibes-based stuff, cliché, being 'trope overdosed' - all of those just wind me up now and I get sick to death of them immediately.

the people I like don't really fall into a single category. some of them are very right-wing, some are very left-wing, some are sort of loosely centrist/neoliberal, but all of them share the same kind of feverish interest in doing the reading and not saying things just because other people say them. it's true in fiction writing as well. and it's not a litfic/genre fiction distinction. there's yawnorama clichéd literary fiction just as much as there is tropetastic by-the-numbers genre fiction.

perhaps the lesson is just that strait is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it
