i know im just preaching to the choir by posting this on my tumblr blog but bluesky is obsessed with celebrating the music industry taking suno and its ilk to court. this article has been going around there with commentary like this:

but it's just fundamentally incorrect. "the point" of lawsuits like this is not to "destroy the perpetrators", it's to bring them to the bargaining table. the linked article is less than 600 words long but i can guarantee you almost nobody sharing it is reading it, because they wouldn't be able to make claims like this otherwise. here's a pretty important bit of text

wuh oh!!!! doesn't look like they're very destroyed here!!!!! you'll notice how these contracts are about compensating rightsholders, not artists. as will be the case for all of these trojan horse copyright victories you have the temporarily embarrassed vivziepops of the world rooting for.

copyright law is not your friend. copyright law will not save you or anyone else from the continued gutting of the creative sector. copyright law will make sure that the profits that come from this gutting will go to the same titans of industry that the profits from creative labor have already been going to. im begging everyone to stop falling for it over and over again.

at the very least if you're going to share celebratory articles about supposed wins for the anti AI crusade, please actually read to see if the thing you're celebrating has actually, like. happened! come on! this is embarrassing!

When I was a freshman in a red-state college, I had a professor who taught Newtonian physics with a super thick Russian accent. The student body was unusually conservative for a state college, so there was a sort of general bemusement about learning physics from a Russian, but even back then the Cold War was far enough in the past that not even the red tribe was inclined to stir up trouble about it.

He was aware enough of this to get off on trolling the class, though. Whenever some force diagram in a homework assignment needed to be weightless, instead of being some generic spacecraft it would be “Mir” specifically. And he’d always use ‘cosmonaut’ instead of ‘astronaut’, that kind of thing.

One day about halfway through the semester, he’s doing this with in-class examples on the board, and one of the students finally gets up the guts to troll back a little. So this kid shouts from the back of the auditorium, “Hey professor, what’s the difference between a cosmonaut and an astronaut?”

And this beautiful man spins around on one heel to face the class, whiteboard marker triumphantly over his head, clearly having been waiting for this moment the entire semester: “Cosmonaut go to space first! Ha!”

#i like the idea of being like well its because the one we did is cool and the others are lame #as if thats not an opinion exclusively formed out of like... growing up in the culture that did that one thing #and naturally then elevates it beyond everything else as if its the most meaningful touchstone #if all the USA did was the first spacewalk instead you know that would be the most romanticised thing in the world
