Rewatching Altered Carbon S1 and MAAAAAN. Like. there's a definition of scifi which requires the media to engage with the sociological ramifications of the technology described, and Altered Carbon. DOES. THAT!!!! It asks and answers the questions, "Out of what culture would technology like this arise?" and "What kind of society results from and then perpetuates its existence?"
And you see it SO fast -- the way human bodies are treated, the intersection of government and technology and human rights. You see that literal child re-sleeved into a 60-year-old woman by the government ("restitution") like 10 minutes into EPISODE ONE. Then the characters go outside and you see the protest over the issue of religious coding, and you're like OKAY!!! We're fifteen minutes in and suddenly we're discussing the implication of transferable consciousness on the idea of the human soul, we're discussing whether the government should have the right to violate religious restrictions in the interest of justice and/or public safety, and don't even get me STARTED on the show's commentary on capitalism and ownership, and the evils therein exacerbated by immortality, like we are in the PILOT getting hit with ALL of this, CAN ANYBODY HEAR ME HELLO
