i try, i really do try, to not be mean but. it’s so very obvious how most people don’t see nonbinary folk as People too. what i mean by this is pretty straightforward: to the average internet user, enbies exist solely on tumblr or twitter. they’re always ugly and fat and have badly dyed and styled hair. they say they're trans but do nothing to transition, and expect you to respect them no matter what, getting very pissed off if you don't. they’re either cringe 30 years old or cringe 15 years old. this extends to real life, of course. they’re that classmate that wears a bunny hat, or the messy roommate that never cleans, or the barista who makes your 6 am frappuccino (the only thing she- I MEAN- they're good for). they live in a Discord server where they tw food and grass, and an extensive vent channel. they always have many self-diagnoses and disabilities at once, and maybe even own a rainbow cane with trinkets. they always have a random gofundme for their partner, their cat, themselves, to "escape their abusive home", to pay their half of the rent, etc. if an adult, they're "kinky" but also asexual, and they might commit the sin of being polyamorous, which explains everything else. they call themselves punk but their "battle jacket" has a minecraft bee patch. they only listen to Will Wood and hyperpop. th elist goes on.
all of that surely painted a picture in your mind. well, that elusive enby or multiple enbies you're imagining right now are most likely real. there are real, tangible, existing people who fit most if not all of the aforementioned criteria. they don't exist solely as a contruct or a concept of The Cringe Nonbinary. by only seeing them as a collection of stereotypes, you forget they still exist and will continue to exist no matter how much it annoys you, bothers you, or even makes you laugh.
and the thing is, there are nonbinary people who are NOTHING like that. there are nonbinaries who are the complete opposite, who despise such stereotypes to the point of joining in the ridicule. who hate it so much they purposefully try their best to escape it or to avoid it, to not fit any ANY of the criteria. there are some who would be happier or truer to themselves if they were like that, but can't allow themselves to do so. out of fear, out of worry. and there are some who know they fit some or all the criteria and are terrified on the daily, who know they will never be taken seriously, who know this bleeds into real life. who know they only exist as The Cringe Nonbinary, and cannot do anything about it.
nonbinary people, cringe or not, stereotypical or not, are Real and are People. they need to eat, to sleep, to go to the doctor, to study, to live. they take the bus, they go to the grocery store, they sit in the park. they play on the same videogame lobbies as you, they use the same social media as you. they love animals like you, they enjoy movies like you. they cry like you, they love like you, they hate like you. they exist like you, they're people like you. they're beings like you. they're real like you. and maybe YOU are a walking stereotype, too.
