OP went on to say, notwithstanding the hyperbole in the second sentence, "most of the elder queers died" and "a generation was nearly wiped out", so please read past the first two sentences and stop trying to do refutation by counterexample.

Yes, the AIDS epidemic was somewhat region-bound, and Reagan's policies certainly were. That does not take anything away from the validity of the post.
I would also add that "elder" in the context of "queer elder" is not completely synonymous with "older". Yes, there's a strong association, but not a complete correlation.
For example, I have a trans friend in her 50s who firmly views me (40) as her queer elder.
Why? Because I've been loudly out and in up the ears in queer stuff for more than 25 years, while she's been out and thusly involved for 2 years. That's quite a difference.
Back to chronological age, though...
I will also note that the AIDS epidemic is not the only reason for the average age of queer people being quite young. It's a strong contributing factor, of course, but:
Queer people disproportionately die younger than cishet people, due to institutional and systemic disadvantages increasing all-cause mortality, which will move the average age downwards.
Birth rates are exponential while death rates are linear, which means that even in a country with an "aging population" (more older people than previously) or a slightly declining birth rate, the average age of the general population will usually (outside of crises and/or major advancements in paediatric or geriatric care) still steadily move downwards, even as average life expectancy increases. There are some outliers; Japan comes to mind. But for most places, this general rule holds.
There is more easily accessible information nowadays which means people can come out earlier, which will move the average age of out queer people downwards.
I am very accustomed to being considered a queer elder. I've been out and active in the queer world for longer than many of my queer friends have been alive. It is, contextually, reasonable that I am considered such when people take that into account.
However, it is just as sad as OP described it being, that I can count my queer elder personal friends on one hand. And that's not for a lack of friendliness or lack of community involvement or anything like that on my part; it's because yes, our queer population demographics really do have a young average age, and a disproportionately low survivorship rate.
Over on Chess.com, I run LGBT Club, with just under 1500 members at time of writing. Our 7-person admin team spans four generations (Boomer, Gen-X, Millennial, Gen-Z). Our oldest admin is 75; she has kids older than me, and views me affectionately in a similar frame. One of the Gen-X admins is a cis gay New Yorker who's been involved in everything you might expect him to have been involved in, including the countless funerals, ACT UP, and so forth. Nor is he idle in the current situation, either, and is busy fighting for trans rights.
I look up to these people as my queer elders.
But to most of those 1500ish members? I am impossibly experienced, unfathomably knowledgeable, and old enough to be the mother of most of them.
