I have noticed a couple of people trying to use the word mansplaining to get trans men or trans masculine people to shut up about whatever topic it is they're discussing
and it made me realize that the word "mansplaining" has been bastardised into "a man that I dislike or disagree with talking about something"
I’m not defending the word “mansplaining” but this is critically (and ironically) missing the point of what it was clumsily coined to describe, which is that there is a pattern of men simply adopting the position of teachers when speaking to women. Even in the original essay—really a short anecdote—by Rebecca Solnit that inspired the term, the man she’s speaking to is chagrined when he realizes he’s explaining her own book to her.
“Does he know he’s dominating the conversation” “do you know more about the topic” “would he talk over you” this is irrelevant!!! Definitionally he does not realize what he’s doing; the whole point is that he has unconscious misogynist biases informing his worldview that lead him to instinctively assume comparative ignorance on the woman’s part. It’s the “I can’t operate, this is my son” joke writ large—a systemic bias that women’s ignorance and lack of authority can be safely assumed unless proven otherwise.

I'm pretty sure decenter men isn't about romance and is more about encouraging women to not center their lives on men's opinions, right? Like, I'm not crazy for thinking that?? That's exactly what it is. Decentering men is less about not dating them and more about for example getting mothers to stop feeding their sons and husbands first + MORE than they feed themselves and THEIR OWN DAUGHTERS. Decentering men is to encourage women not to prioritize a man's feelings, aspirations, hopes, dreams, and physical health over their own. Dating, work, friendships, how + why one exercises and adjusts their diet to their lifestyle, what they choose to major in, whether they even get an education in the first place, etc. Sometimes this has to do with dating, but not always. Mothers who will bend over backwards for their sons and leave their daughters to fend for themselves are male centered.
