dont you just love capitalism.. Â
Black Mirror predicted this we are all goona die
my god but I get mad when someone flippantly dismisses important scientific progress because you can make it sound dumb by framing it the right way.
For a start, of course a lot of science sounds dumb. Â Science is all in the slogging through the minutiae, the failures, the tedious process of filling in the blank spaces on the map because it ainât ât glamorous, but if someone doesnât do it, no one gets to know for sure whatâs there.
Someoneâs gotta spend their career measuring fly genitalia under a microscope. Frankly, Iâm grateful to the person who is tackling that tedium, because if they didnât, I might have to, and I donât wanna.
But letâs talk about why we should care about this particular science and spend money on it. (And Iâll even answer without even glancing at the article.)
Off the top of my head?
-advances in robotics
-advances in miniature robotics
-advances in flight technology
-advantages in simulating and understanding the mechanics and programming of small intelligences
-ability to grow crops in places uninhabitable by insects (space? cold/hot? places where honeybees are non-native and detrimental to the ecosystem?)
-ability to improve productivity density of crops and feed more people
-less strain on bees, who do poorly when forced to pollinate monocultures of low nutrition plants
-ability to run tightly controlled experiments on pollination, on the effects of bees on plant physiology, on ecosystem dynamics, etc
-fucking robot bees, my friend
-hahaha think how confused those flowers must be
Also worth keeping in mind? People love, love, love framing science in condescending and silly sounding terms as an excuse to cut funding to vital programs. *Especially* if itâs also associated with something (gasp) âinappropriateâ, like sex or ladyparts. This is why research for a lot of womenâs issues, lgbtq+ issues, minoritiesâ issues, and vulnerable groups in generalâs issues tends to lag so far behind the times. This is why some groups are pushing so hard to cut funding for climate change research these days.
Anything thatâs acquired governmental funding has been through and intensely competitive, months-to-years long screening by EXPERTS IN THE FIELD who have a very good idea what research is likely to be most beneficial to that field and fill a needed gap.
Trust me. Â The paperwork haunts my nightmares.
So, we had a joke in my lab: âNice work, college boy.â It was the phrase for any project that you could spend years and years working on and end up with results that could be summed up on a single, pretty slide with an apparently obvious graph. The phrase was taken from something a grower said at a talk my advisor gave as a graduate student: âSo you proved that plants grow better when theyâre watered? Nice work, college boy.â
But like, the thing is? Thereâs always more details than that. And a lot of times itâs important that somebody questions our assumptions.Â
A labmate of mine doing very similar research demonstrated that our assumptions about the effect of water stress on plant fitness have been wrong for years because *nobody had thought to separate out the different WAYS a plant can be water stressed.* (Continuously, in bursts, etc.). And it turns out these ways have *drastically different effects* with drastically different measures required for response to them to keep from losing lots of money and resources in agriculture.
Nice work, college boy. :p
Point the second: surprise! Anna Haldewang is an industrial design student.  She developed this in her product design class.  And, as far as I can tell, she has had no particular funding at all for this project, much less billions of dollars.Â
âgrats, Anna, you FUCKING ROCK.
ps: On a lighter note, summarizing research to make it sound stupid is both easy AND fun. Check out @lolmythesisâ â I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. :33

Iâd also like to chime in that a chunk of my family are apple farmers, and one thing I learned visiting them is that you canât always let bees pollinate. With certain apple varieties, people have to go out with little paintbrushes to pollinate them by hand, because if they cross-pollinate with the wrong variety the apples wonât come out the same. Beebots could potentially be a huge time-saver at that task, because depending on how the algorithms work, you could just tell them âDonât go into the Gala field next doorâ and let them do the job more efficiently than you without having to worry about getting weird mutant apples.
Also holy shit all science is not interchangeable. Nobody got up one morning and said âinstead of saving the bees Iâm going to build a bee robot.â

My doctor has been telling me I should go vegan for ages to help with all my autoimmune issues and Iâve been like nah Iâm good but the minute my psychic suggests it, Iâm totally on board.
So I donât typically pimp my real life out here, thereâs a careful divide, BUT hereâs the exception. I believe everyone knows what I do, I am the executive director of a no kill animal shelter. We are a small private entity that does not get any local or federal government funding. When I joke that my job is to beg for money in creative ways, itâs actually not a joke, we exist solely on donations and fundraising so we can stay independent and therefore no kill.Â
SO, hereâs the pitchâŚYouâre holiday shopping anyway, so why not spend the money you were already going to spend on a gift and give one that helps some animals. Youâre buying a hoodie anyway letâs say, this particular hoodie will feed or medicate an animal in my shelter. Makes sense right? There are t shirts, long sleeve tâs, and hoodies. Hereâs the link, bonfire.com/pet-placement-center-holiday-sale, and if you so choose to get one my animals thank you.Â
A New Hampshire Republican State Representative anonymously created the âRed Pillâ subreddit.
Wow.
these arenât just bullshitter dweebs in their momâs basements trolling the internet, these are men who formulate the way we implement laws and who govern the way we live our lives.
^^^ Hello, yes, everyone needs to see this. Itâs not always a bunch of nobodies trolling around on 4chan. Itâs, doctors, lawyers, judges, businessmen, bankers, law enforcement, etc. People who have pulls on society. They literally donât see other groups besides themselves as human or equal
âŚholy shit like this is bad really really bad but so much clearly so if youâve ever read the scum that floats to the top of the Red Pill. Like basically he was just outed as the creator of a neo-nazi misogynist pro-rape forum explicitly to recruit online loners and groom them like itâs EVERYTHING weâve been saying these people do but this is like, the hive.
For the anon asking why not trust red pill guys
Fuck Conservatives
Fun fact: the Red Pill was 90% of the reason I left reddit. I think itâs important everyone understands why, without having to subject yourselves to actually looking at the subreddit.
The Red Pill is a confluence of gross misogyny, rape culture, and vile social darwinism, all tied up under the banner of it being the âtruthâ behind some grand lie that is PC culture; that is to say, taking the red pill to withdraw yourself from the Matrix, a metaphor nearly as dated as the ideals they espouse.
If you think Iâm exaggerating, Iâm not. I spent nearly two years on reddit before toxic bullshit like this drove me out. These people build an elaborate construct about treating women like property and sexualizing children because ~evolution~ programmed them to like it, and ~evolution~ canât possibly be wrong, as though club-wielding Neanderthal brutes are something to aspire to and not something we left behind millennia ago.
Theyâve created an incredibly detailed fantasy about how women are evolutionarily predisposed to react to certain behaviors of âalpha malesâ (another false equivalence; the theory of the alpha male comes from a since-disproved theory about wolf behavior), and how the trick to success in sex is about taking on these characteristics which, spoiler alert, explicitly encourage treating women like garbage.
I cannot overstate how incredibly toxic the Red Pill is and how disgustingly large the community became by the time I left reddit. I wish I could say I was surprised that a Republican senator founded it, but this is the kind of shit theyâve been legislating for years.
Why am I not surprised?
