Rise Headcanon: Draxum's ooze reacts weird with yokai DNA, probably due to some mystic reason, which causes the resulting mutation to be unstable if a yokai is involved in any way. This is why Draxum chose a human as a DNA source to create the turtles instead of using himself or any other yokai as a base to build off of, despite how much he despised humans.
So, usually with TMNT, we get the origin story of the turtles pretty early on. Rise is no different, except it is; because yes, we get a bit of backstory right at the first episode, but while usually we get to hear the story from Splinter, in Rise we get it from Draxum instead. And I bring this up because, as far as I remember at least, Splinter never actually tells the story himself in Rise - and it's not just the audience that doesn't get to hear it from his mouth, because the boys didn't know anything about the yokai, they had no idea who Draxum was at the start, they were surprised to hear he had created them and, this is important, they had no idea Splinter was Lou Jitsu or that they were created using his DNA.
So my question is; if Splinter never told the boys he was Lou Jitsu, never told them about Draxum and never told them about the Hidden City and the yokai, what the hell did he tell them when they asked him where they'd come from? Because they have to have asked at some point, that's a question kids always ask. Did he make something up? Did he find a way to avoid the question entirely? What kinda elaborate bullshit did you pull on your kids for 13 years old man?

Sorting different versions of Raph into mysterious categories using the criteria of whether or not they'd paint their nails.
Tales Raph and 07 Raph wouldn't do it, but Tales Raph might consider it if he can be convinced it would make him look cool. 03 Raph wouldn't do it himself, but he'd let Mikey do it if he asked. 12 Raph would paint his nails black with sharpie after seeing Casey do it. And Rise Raph would actively ask Mikey or April to paint his nails for him because his hands are too big to properly grisp the nail polish brush but he thinks it looks pretty. His favorite colors are red and pink.
Artemis is a self insert not in that she is me, but in that she is the means with which I interact with the TMNT universe, which means I have to be VERY careful not to turn 12 Artemis into a therapist because I want nothing more than to put those turtles in therapy.
12 TMNT shares a space in my brain with 07 TMNT as the two turtle families who need therapy the most. The duality of man is that I see the 12 turtles and the many ways in which they're hurting and I want to make it better for them in any way I can, and then I look at the 07 turtles who are arguably hurting way more and I want to sit at a safe distance with my binoculars and watch while they get worse. And this reflects in these different versions of Artemis as well; 12 Artemis sees her little brothers being dumb and decides she's going to be the shoulder they can lean on, 07 Artemis saw her little brothers being dumb and also tried to be their anchor for a bit but it eventually got to be too much and she dipped, only crawling out of her hole to knock Leo and Raph's thick skulls together so hard they were both seeing stars for weeks

I am curious what are your top three favorites for each turtles? Like you mentioned 12 Raph was your top three for Raph I am curious about the other two. For me I like 12 03 and tales Raph
Thank you so very much for asking, you have activated my trap card. This got long as hell because I started yapping and couldn't stop, so I'll put the lists under a cut :)
DISCLAIMER: The TMNT iterations I'm familiar with are 03, 12, Rise, Mutant Mayhem/Tales, the 07 movie and the Bayverse movies. I've recently started watching the 87 show but I haven't gotten very far into yet, and I don't know anything about the any of the comics other than a few superficial wikipedia readings on the IDW series.
That being said, RAF'S TOP 3 FAVORITES FOR EACH TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLE:
LEONARDO:
03 Leo. The 03 show is my favorite, so expect to see a lot of 03 turtles on first place. I just really like Leo's parsonality in this show, he's firm but he's not overbearing as a leader, which fits perfectly with the dynamic of the 03 turtles and makes his season 4 arc even more jarring when Trauma Strikes and he starts acting less like a leader and more like a drill sargeant. I just really like the characterization for all of the 03 turtles and Leo's is especially juicy.
Tales Leo. I love him your honor, he's just a little guy. All Leos have anxiety but in other versions, Leo tends to still come across as confident and self assured, so seeing a Leo who's just Very Nervous All The Time is very fun and very refreshing. This kid is a natural leader but he's the least assertive person in the world and it's really satisfying to see when he's able to overcome that and actually take charge of things.
07 Leo. I love him. I hate him. I understand him perfectly and it makes me wanna punch him in the face. He's a victim of circumstance but he's also guilty of being a hypocrite and an egotistical asshole. I want to fix him and I want to see him get worse. The dynamic between the 07 turtles is absolutely fascinating to me and he's to blame for a lot of it - it's not his fault things got as bad as they did, but he didn't make it any better by completely ghosting his family for two years and in fact only made things worse when he eventually showed back up. Guy of all time.
Honorable mention: Rise Leo. He used to be on the top 3 and I still really really like him, but the abrupt leadership change at the end of Rise left a REALLY sour taste in my mouth. It's not his fault, but alas, I cannot change my spiteful feelings :/
RAPHAEL:
Rise Raph. My blorbo. My boy son my son boy. I LOVE Rise Raph more than I can put into words. I LOVE the dynamic we get with Raph being leader and I love all of the context behind why that is the case, because it's not just about switching places with Leo: it's about how Raph is the oldest, it's about how he's the biggest, it's about how he feels responsible for his brothers. It's about how we can assume from Splinter's (lack of) parenting in the show that he probably dropped the ball at some point and Raph had to step in for his brothers and how they've come to expect him to always be there to help them get out of trouble as a result. It's about how much we see him worrying about his family and pushing himself to his limit for them. It all slots together neatly and this is why him being the leader felt so right to me despite it being a big change from the previous status quo. And this is why him losing the leader role at the end of the show pissed me off so much I demoted Rise Leo from my top 3.
03 Raph. Another W for the 03 show, I love the angle we get with Raph's temper in here, where instead of pushing his anger outward and blaming others for it, he knows that he has a short fuse and we see him work with it as the show progresses. I love how protective he is of his brothers, I lost count of how many times I've seen him jump head first into danger for one or all of them. 03 Raph is a Raph who cares, about his family yes but we also see him care for strangers and people who are vulnerable. He's a gooey marshmallow of a turtle and he doesn't even try that hard to pretend he's not honestly. He's a champ. I also love how much a dude he is, he's always on some dude stuff especially when Casey gets involved (03 also has my favorite dynamic between Casey and Raph, one of my favorite moments in the show is them parkouring off the roofs while shit-talking eachother for the love of the game).
12 Raph. I love him because of just how intense his anger issues are - it's not just having a temper, everytime I watch the 12 show I can only think about how there's something actually wrong here and how this kid actually needs help that he just can't get. In one episode, Leo pokes fun at him for complaining how "nobody understands him", but. He's right, they don't. And he doesn't really help in that case, but I don't think even Raph understands himself and it doesn't help that instead of working with his anger, he gets constantly told to just shove it down, push it away. His anger is framed as a problem he needs to fix, but he's never told how to do it so he explodes and he lashes out at the people around him, and then he gets told he needs to fix himself, and he doesn't know how, and the cycle repeats. This is a kid who just... needed more help than what his family was able to give him, because they love him, but they really don't understand him. But I do. The heart is a soft muscle and 12 Raph's heart might be the softest of them all.
Honorable mentions: Pretty much every other Raph because of how much I love Raph in general. Tales Raph is chaos incarnate and I love him for it, 07 Raph fascinates me because I can see how he's hurt and I know he's coping really badly but he's just as big of an asshole as 07 Leo and he doesn't even realize it which makes their conflict even more yummy. And from what little I've seen of 87 Raph I can confidently say he's the funniest motherfucker on this list. "Does the phrase go suck a lemon hold any meaning for you?" I love that guy.
DONATELLO:
03 Donnie. I love him so much. So much you don't understand. I love the soft spoken, kind, patient sweetheart Donnie. I love this Donnie who always tries to be hopeful and optimistic, who sees the best in people and who makes the impossible happen so he can help others, sometimes complete strangers, because it's the right thing to do. I can absolutely see why the family fell apart when he disappeared in the SAINW universe, he's just. He's such a good boy. He's such a sweeties. He's my other son boy. I love him. He's my favorite Donnie and one of my favorite turtles across iterations.
Bayverse Donnie. I don't hate the Bay movies, but I don't love them either. However, Bay Donnie gets the honor of being the only Bay turtle to reach any of my top 3s. He's just a silly guy, I love how awkward he is and how ready he is to roll with the punches and how he just. Does insane shit like jump off a plane with zero thought put into it. He's a silly goofy little (big) boy. I love all the random tech he has haphazardly hanging off him and he gets bonus points for being the least ugly of the Bay turtles in my humble opinion. I still think he's still ugly as sin but he doesn't hurt me to look at nearly as much as the other three do. The glasses are cute :)
Rise Donnie. My favorite Donnie of all time is the quiet sweeties polite Donnie but I would be lying if I said I don't love insane mad scientist Donnie too. He's a fan favorite for a reason, he's just a delight to watch in action. I love the chaos he brings to any situation, I love the while overly confident egotistical theater kid situation he's got going on, it makes me wanna punch him in ghe face (affectionate). I am FASCINATED by the Turtle Tank and I am desperate to know how the fuck it works and how Donnie managed to turn a movie prop into a functioning vehicle with at least two separate sets of wheels and pedals. Give him that uranium I wanna see what he does with it.
Honorable mention: 07 Donnie. The 07 movie is well known for how it shafted both him and Mikey in favor of Leo and Raph, which is a tragedy because I LOVE 07 Donnie. We don't learn much about him but it's the implications that do it for me, really. How he must have known Raph was up to Some Bullshit but he never bothered trying to figure out what, how he didn't worry about babysitting Mikey and just let him do his thing his own way, how he just kept himself busy with his work until Leo came back and that might not sound like much of anything but trust me, I know the Internal Struggle when I see it. I see you wasting him time on a menial job so he won't think about how his family is falling apart around him. I can see him thinking he's partially responsible for the collapse, because it's implied that Leo put him in charge before he left and if the family is breaking now, then he must feel like it's because he failed to keep them together. I'm just REALLY fascinated by the dynamic in 07 and since neither Mike nor Don got the development and the catharsis Leo and Raph got, I'll be delusional and hyperanalyze everything about them myself :)
MICHELANGELO:
03 Mikey. My favorite Mikey of all time and also one of my favorite turtles across the turtleverse. He's got that classic scatterbrained Michelangelo bit going on for him, he's a silly dude who embraces being silly, but what elevates him for me is the fact that the show takes him seriously. He's the youngest brother who causes chaos and gets in trouble and drives his brothers up the wall, yes, but he's allowed to be serious when needs to be and his brothers still take him seriously. But what I love the most about him is that a lot of times when he goofs around, he very much does it on purpose. He makes it his job to break the tension when it gets too heavy, he intentionally tries to bring levity to dire situations and I think that's something to really appreciate about him because it shows he's observant. And I love that we see him use this skill and the image he's built of himself in his favor to get out of doing things he doesn't want to do. "Would you rather see Mikey happy, or Mikey bored?" Respect.
Rise Mikey. I love him, I love how he wears his heart on his sleeve, I love that he's an artist, I love how he's so... Mikey. Mikey is my favorite turtle alongside Raph and Rise Mikey is the embodiment of everything I love about Michelangelo as a character. He's kind, he's optimistic, he's silly, he's the hype man for the team, he's witty, he's stubborn as hell, he sees the best in people, he's just great. And he hit Shredder in the face with a whole cargo ship. And then he ripped an entire a fucking building off the ground and threw it at the Krang. And the whole Dr. Delicate Touch/Dr. Feelings bit. I am terrified of Rise Mikey and I love him deeply. I wish the show had given him more screentime because MAN I loved the little bits we got of him so much, I wanted more ;A;
12 Mikey. I love him less for what we're told about him and more for what we're shown. The little things that are never said aloud. This poor kid got done so dirty by the 12 writers and it shows in how he's treated by the other characters in the show. I don't think he's ever actually treated seriously once in the entire series. Everything that happens to him turns into a joke, even when he's the one who saves the day, which is REALLY frustrating because. I love him. He's adorable! He tries so hard and he keeps trying even when he comes up short! He actually has good ideas, they just need a little refinement but the problem is that nobody ever listens to him, and he knows it! He aknowledges it! "Mikey Gets Shellacne" is sort of a joke episode as is par for the course with everything involving 12 Mikey, but it's so heartbreaking to me. You're telling me this kid feels like such a burden to his team that he's willing to risk using mutagen to "fix" himself so he'll do better? And this is never really adressed? The episode centers around trying to find a cure for the shellacne and Mikey gets his moment of glory in the end, but the root of the problem is never really acknowledged. 12 Mikey I see you, I know you're doing the best you can and I'm proud of you.
Honorable mention: 07 Mikey. Much like Rise Mikey, he doesn't have a lot of screentime but what little bits of him we see in the movie are really charming to me. He has that same aspect from 03 Mike that I love of trying to break the tension and lighten the load for the family, but his family is already so jaded and we see it affect him, too. How he can't really keep up the act anymore but he still tries anyway. I loved seeing how happy he was to see Leo again despite everything and I think its so cute that he works with kids because yes!!! Yes that's the perfect job for Mikey!!! I just really like him, wish we'd seen more of him but alas. Once again the source material gave me naught but scraps, and yet I shall make a feast of the crumbs.
