Just finished heartbreak high s3 here are my little thoughts:
- i actually enjoyed the season about as much as the other two, the characters feel so real I don't even care about the plot just let me see my babies hang out
- someone called spider domesticated and i will be thinking about that for a week
- i love cash. he was the best this season. love me some ace rep, i thought his and darren's relationship was well done and loved that in the previous seasons his asexuality was talked about more but here he gets to also just be a person with other things going on for them too
- as much as it hurt i think missy and spider breaking up made sense, though they could have developed it a bit more
- i love noah. if amerie doesn't want him i'm good with being a trophy wife to an understanding and communicating rich boy
- on that note amerie and malakai had ZERO chemistry this season like wtf was that. after s2 i could see them get back together but this season it was just so bland like why do they even like each other
- i was soooo nervous the whole time that amerie will break up with noah cause i just hate the "here is a perfect man that you will break up with for no reason other than you can't get over your first love" trope like give me a rest
- i could see the reason they broke up though, a wage gap in a relationship can be difficult but be forrealll they could have figured it out but nooo we gotta get back with malakai
- i could never forgive sasha, i understand she's also young and was bullied, but she's been insufferable this whole time and ALMOST KILLED SOMEONE. she could also have killed harper and malakai, i understand wanting to get back at them but it was just too extreme
- i just wanted to see her face some consequences, wdym she only got community service
- on that note i had a really hard time watching this season because wdym they left an injured person behind. like no matter what trouble you get how could you not at least call an ambulance after you ran? to me that is just inexcusable no matter how young and dumb they are
- i liked taz's character but they did go overboard with what she did. the sensory room is already diabolical but if it's just that i couuuld see quinny forgiving her, but costing her scholarship?? even if your mom died how could you mess with someone's life like that. i think her character is realistic but she should not be with quinny wtf
- dusty appearing at the party just to be caught by police was the funniest shit this season, i don't even remember what happened in s1 anymore but i just know the dude deserved it, even seeing his face made me go eww
- honestly i just want people to face some realistic consequences. i think it's fine to show people mess up, even royally, but cmoon let's not then pretend they're good people or deserve to be forgiven, i want them to see some shit and grow before we can talk

the most disorienting thing thats ever happened to me was when a linguistics major stopped in the middle of our conversation, looked me in the eye, and said, "you have a very interesting vernacular. were you on tumblr in 2014?" and i had to just stand there and process that one for a good ten seconds
#i was in a car with a linguist i had never met before the car trip and like half an hour in he looked at me#after i finished describing a geology thing that was happening out the window and asked if i'd ever spent much time on tumblr#the fuckor of it all#and then we spent six more hours driving#it sure does leave linguistic markers! i'm not sure i'm good with it (tags via @thoughtsformtheuniverse)
it is one thing to be a linguist and another to be a linguist who knows enough of 2010s Tumblr to spot one of its enjoyers
Oh! @meret118 see above comment! The use of the word "enjoyers" instead of "users" or "bloggers" -> You left a comment a while back asking, "Does this just mean vocabulary words? Other than blorbo and sweet cinnamon roll etc, I can't think of what a Tumblr accent would be." I almost never see anyone use the word "enjoyer" anywhere outside of tumblr, but I see it on tumblr fairly frequently.
Another one is the verb "perceive" i.e. "don't perceive me" "I am perceiving" "I am being percieved." That's something that feels very specific to tumblr parlance.
There's the thing where people on tumblr have an emotional reaction to something and instead of, or in addition to telling you how they feel about it using emotion words, they will narrate a fictional action in the present progressive tense. "I am gnawing at the bars of my enclosure "I am kissing you on the mouth" "you are going into the soup" "you are getting all of the awards"
I once saw someone use that response format in ... I think it was a restaurant review, or a doordash review, or something like that. It was very unexpected seeing it outside of a tumblr post.
There are a lot of other tumblr linguistic quirks I can't currently remember off the top of my head, but I'll instantly recognize them if I see/hear them outside of tumblr. It's always a bit startling to see them out of context.
when I was in university one of my modules was about internet slang and for our grades project we had to compile and analyse a small database of 100 words used by a specific community of our choice. I chose tumblr and that's how I stumbled across Gretchen McCulloch's research and discovered that yes not only did tumblr have its own vernacular and syntax (as @lierdumoa demonstrates), it was at the time a crucible of slang and memes probably unrivalled by any other part of the internet. and it's stayed that way! even the very title is McCulloch's book because internet is an example of this specific phraseology.
sadly my project is lost due to the website being wiped from the university database after graduation and my then laptop having a major hardware failure. backup your backups people! but the crux of the entire module was that the internet is full of communities using language not only as jargon for specific purpose but also to signal membership in said community. I even wrote a bit about non capitalisation and punctuation useage as a visual cue on tumblr and how including information in the reblog body or the tags indicated different levels of importance or intimacy of thought
I am holding the side of your face and looking deep in your eyes and telling you that love is stored in the syntax, and that we are rotating words together all at once as we all nod at their new and baffling meanings. if the devils sacrament be tumblr then the devils gospel is our collective voice. thanks for coming to my tedtalk

Everybody talks about Anastasia, which is a shame, because itās a far less interesting example of Russian fake heir drama than that whole business with the False Dmitries.
Okay, so Ivan the Terribleās youngest son, Dmitry, was assassinated in 1591 at the age of 8. Fast-forward nine years, and thereās a guy going about Eastern Europe claiming that he is Dmitry, having secretly escaped the assassination attempt and lived in hiding under a false identity ever since. This sort of business isnāt too unusual, but this guy actually pulls it off, managing to gain the Russian throne and rule for nearly eleven months before being dragged from the palace and publicly executed in early 1606. Heād subsequently go down in history as False Dmitry I.
Hereās where it gets interesting. In mid 1607, a second impostor declares himself. Bizarrely, this one doesnāt dispute the first impostorās legitimacy; instead, he claims to be the same guy, having miraculously survived his apparent execution the year before. He somehow wins the political support of False Dmitry Iās widow, and with her vouching for his identity, he gains the allegiance of the Cossacks, rallies an army over 100 000 strong, and tries to ātake backā the throne. Though his march on Moscow ultimately failed, he successfully conquered most of Southeastern Russia, which he would rule until his untimely death in December of 1610, when he was beheaded in a drunken altercation with a Tartar prince. The history books know him as False Dmitry II.
Now jump ahead three months to March of 1611, when a third fucking impostor pops up. Dude apparently just magically appeared from behind a waterfall in goddamn Ivangorod and declared himself Tsar. Following the lead of False Dmitry II, he doesnāt dispute either of the two previous impostors, instead claiming some sort of spiritual reincarnation and/or magical resurrection ā itās not entirely clear which ā to establish himself as the same guy. He must have talked a good game, because he managed to win the support of the same fucking Cossacks who supported False Dmitry IIās claim. Unfortunately, he was a far less able commander, being forced to flee his stronghold only a year later, whereupon he was spirited away to Moscow and secretly executed. Though he never managed to actually rule anything, historians decided to stick to the theme and dubbed him False Dmitry III.
At this point the historical record becomes confused, with some sources asserting there was a fourth False Dmitry, though others insist that the third False Dmitry was simply counted twice due to poor record-keeping. Still, whether weāre talking about three False Dmitries or four, imagine the whole mess from the Tsarās perspective. Dude just wouldnāt stay dead!
