there are so many ways that i am already certain that nolan has absolutely failed in the odyssey. but i KNOWWWWW he is not going to make the bow contest sexy enough. what's the fucking point if the bow contest isn't sexy. return (2024) did it! odysseus was fucking that goddamn palintonos in front of and for his wife. that was a threesome AND IT SHOULD BE. i bet nolan won't even let penelope come up with it. i bet nolan won't even let the slaughter be weird odypen foreplay that they plan together. why is there a human spine on a helmet.

modern adaptations of the odyssey keep shying away from the slaughter of the suitors and quite frankly it's a little pathetic. the WHOLE POINT is that it's a revenge narrative. you aren't saying anything cool or enlightened by having penelope plead for the suitors' lives or by having odysseus spontaneously decide that he doesn't want to kill anyone else, actually. you're actively undermining what i would consider to be the most important parallel between odysseus and penelope, and that's the fact that they are the Sexually Harassed Couple. the slaughter of the suitors is revenge on the increasingly violent men that have been threatening penelope, and it's revenge by proxy on calypso who did carry through on the threat of raping odysseus. yes it's a parallel to the siege of troy. yes it's a device for odysseus to prove his masculinity through combat. but it is mostly about defending his wife from sexual harassment. adaptations that decide to spare instead of slaughter the suitors aren't "ending the cycle of violence" or some shit, they're just reinforcing the cultural narrative that sexual harassment is fine actually and doesn't need consequences.

from what i'm hearing, nolan didn't quite stick the landing for his ending, but at least made a good honest try for it. at least there IS a slaughter of the suitors. so i will give credit where it is due and say thank you christopher nolan for the homicides
