my post was trying to say that shipping as an activity should be about what brings joy to the person shipping and shouldn’t be too influenced by what would sound the most logical in a hypothetical literary analysis.
to give a broad example: i could see that Captain America and Iron Man being together romantically makes sense because their arcs are so intertwined and literarily, that would make for a great storyline and interpretation of the characters, but i like Captain America and the Winter Soldier more, because that makes me want to scream into my pillow and announce to the masses that they are soulmates.

Yeah maybe it’s toxic, maybe it’s codependent, maybe they were doomed from the start because of their trauma and they never realize it until after they break up. Maybe one of them is ignoring the reality of their partner’s lived experience regarding their race or gender. Maybe the other person is cheating on their partner, and when the truth comes out, things get uncomfortable.
If you don't like a ship, it's not for you, simple as that. Move on.
