Whenever I start getting irritated about one of my otps (GiyuShino) receiving hate from some persistent trolls for being fanon, for a moment I do wholeheartedly wish for them to be canon. But then I remember the false and scandalous things said about my other otp (JinMao) which is canon. So, I remind myself the problem actually isn't the canonical status of the ship, it is something else.
People are genuinely, unwittingly, becoming miserable. They are not happy. They don't care if their ships are fanon or canon, they just want to seethe and roil in misery... It is worse on some apps than others but it is there on every platform now...
However, having faced unwarranted hate for shipping a canon and a fanon otp, there is one upside to this— I can be a bitch to haters without feeling guilt. I know now people just like to be miserable, so instead of giving them a benefit of doubt, I bite them back. It is exhilarating!!
