(Before anyone comes after me, not that I care, I know shipping is personal and shipping is hardly about canon! I know and understand everything, it is just that some people pretend canon can be applied to criticize only selected fanon ships! Esp when those fanon ships aren't even problematic and involve characters with no explicit romance mentioned in canon, and this tends to happen a lot with GS on certain platforms including Tumblr and X... However, what amuses me is the other FANON shippers doing this selective criticism, esp when their ships are standing on even weaker grounds in canon...It is about those people and an attempt from my end to understand what Giyushino is even competing against in canon to be so frequently reminded of what is canonically given about their dynamic? It is about understanding the hypocrisy!)
I am highly amused by some GiyuShino antis when they use canon selectively to ask shippers to not ship them. Fair enough GiyuShino ain't technically canon, and usually one would respect canon wrt shipping if they already had love interests (not that shippers usually care about canon), but no other major character is their love interest, so I want to ask GiyuShino ain't making sense in canon against whom???
Mind you this post ain't about people pointing out misinformation around GS (or KnY in general) from canon pov in a genuine way, it is about loudmouths who complain how Giyushino, as a dynamic, doesn't make sense according to canon—
"why can't a man and woman be friends?"
"Giyuu didn't care about Shinobu/Shinobu hated Giyuu"
"Only manga matters! gaiden/anime/novels etc doesn't matter"
"Giyuu has a wife/they are not canon so why ship them??"
It is about people who use canon (and other official source material) selectively! Since GS not being canon should make us think about not shipping them, and apparently acc to these loudmouths their dynamic in canon is not great, I want to ask whichever other ships of theirs make the cut according to canon dynamics??? The short answer is NONE, the long answer —
I think it is time that GiyuShino shippers start reminding the other shippers especially Giyuu x some other character(s) ones why their ships are not canon also!
If GiyuShino is at the bottom of barrel in terms of being canon, my friend, your ships don't even enter the barrel (except for SbGy)!
SnGy (BkDk rip-off in KnY): Needed war's destruction and death for it to become functional, most probably married off to npc women. Sanemi literally needed everyone else's death to pass Tomioka a smile or share lunch with him! (Also Sanemi canonically has a crush on Kanae, and like Giyuu he most probably ended up with a wife which invalidates him being strictly gay in canon)...
GiyuTan: probably the most canon-heavy dynamic but the catch is Tanjiro is a minor and has a canon love interest!
RenGiyuu: "Giyuu didn't care about Shinobu's death" crowd goes awfully quiet when someone talks about Giyuu's reaction to Rengoku's death (my man didn't even blink)
ObaGiyuu: How romantic it is to be called ratface by your colleague!! (Also, Obanai has a canon love interest)
UzuGiyuu: Lmaoo all their interactions are off-screen (Also, Uzui is canonically married)
AkaGiyuu: Yeah the romance of having a demon chase you to death and make you meet another colleague's fate (Rengoku)! (Akaza/Hakuji is canonically married/engaged)
KokuGiyuu: Need I say more?? All it has going on is 'Karl and Gary' nonsense. (Kokushibo never even interacted with him and is canonically married)
GiyuMitsu: Awww how romantic when a colleague questions your dress choice! (Also Mitsuri has a canon love interest)
GiyuKana: We don't even know if they interacted!!
GyoGiyuu: no onscreen interactions!
Giyuu x his wife: nearest to canon, the only catch being we don't know who she is or how she looks as Gtg hasn't given us a name or face for seven years now (since manga ended)!! Don't know about you but I would rather stick with a ship where a woman has a name or a face (also him most probably ending up with a wife invalidates the chatter that Giyuu is gay, like Sanemi)
Note: these are the popular/noteworthy Giyuu ships I can think of, there are obviously more!
The only ship that fulfills all criteria of being the most canon-compliant ship more than GiyuShino is SabiGiyuu! Because Sabito's loss literally made Tomioka the way he is, and in Reincarnation AU, they meet again as friends!
Yet somehow the SabiGiyu shippers hardly make unnecessary noise! Perhaps it is the security of canon having actual fodder for their dynamic, unlike most of these ships!
In fact, forget about other Giyu/Shinobu ships, most ships involving Hashira x Hashira hardly make sense because they hardly interact! Except for ObaMitsu being canon, Hashira interactions barely stretch beyond a couple of panels in manga...Even as a non-ship dynamic, Shinobu and Giyuu are kinda exceptions in terms of Hashira interacting with each other in different official source material! The fact that in terms of female characters, Giyuu has shared most screentime with Shinobu??! Or the fact that we never see Giyuu interacting with Gyomei or Uzui or Rengoku or Mitsuri one-on-one in manga??? Lmaoo imagine trying to act smug about calling Giyushino interactions bare minimum and then liking ships where interactions between Hashira are even bare minimum by bare minimum's standards!!!
The reason I don't mention Shinobu ships is because non-GS Shinobu shippers don't usually use canon so selectively, although some ShinoMitsu shippers do act toxic on X about GiyuShino not making sense according to canon (as if the ship ain't built on non-manga/anime interactions in novels, in manga/anime they barely interact), and ships like DuoShino are just straight up r*pe fetish that I have already addressed, rest of non-GS Shinobu shippers are chill! In fact, I kinda enjoy the fact that Shinobu gets shipped with men like Rengoku, who are technically more communicative (curse the artistically rich and talented Giyushino fandom that brings out the dynamic's magnetism so beautifully that I remain hooked with this ship, otherwise Shinobu definitely has options!)
The point is these people say GS doesn't make sense as per canon, so I want to ask against whom are they not making sense?? Except for their one or two ships, every other ship of theirs stands on even weaker grounds from canon pov, in fact almost all Hashira x Hashira ships hardly make the cut wrt canon! So, against whom is this ship competing??? The other ones are grasping at straws even more desperately than GiyuShino!
My friend, there is a reason why 2 out of 3 most popular Giyuu ships involve dead characters (Shinobu and Sabito), the bar is in hell when it comes to shipping Giyuu with other characters!!
