Cultural feminism is arguably the worst strand of feminism, but unfortunately it’s everywhere. In Whipping Girl, I describe it as being invested in oppositional sexism but flipping traditional sexism, such that women are now deemed inherently “good” and “pure,” and men inherently “oppressive” and “dangerous.” Cultural feminism forms the backbone of “gender critical”/TERF ideology, but it also informs mainstream feminism, for instance, in the idea that there would be no violence or other societal ills if female politicians ran the government, or if every company had a female CEO, and so on. It’s extremely anti-intersectional. And it’s obviously bullshit, as many women commit acts of violence and act oppressively toward other marginalize groups. But it’s popular because it’s simple and it paints cis women as victims who are entirely free of any culpability.
Because it’s everywhere, cultural feminism has seeped into trans politics. And if men are deemed an “oppressive” “corruptive” force, and women the “pure” yet “vulnerable” victims of male oppression, then trans people must be either one of the following three things:
1. Trans male/masculine people are the victims of male oppression because they are AFAB and experienced “female socialization.” Which, if true, implies that trans female/feminine people are “male oppressors.”
2. Trans female/feminine people are the victims of male oppression because we move through the world as women and femmes in the here and now. Which, if true, implies that trans male/masculine people are “male oppressors.”
3. All trans people have been corrupted/poisoned by maleness/masculinity in one way or another, which, if true, means that we should all be lumped into the “male oppressor” category.
I coined the term transmisogyny to refer to the intersection of oppositional and traditional sexism in our lives. I made it very clear—both in the book and in my subsequent writings—that trans male/masculine people also face oppositional sexism (e.g., transphobia) and traditional sexism (misogyny).
Unfortunately, due to the ever-present specter of cultural feminism, some people have misinterpreted “transmisogyny” as argument #2 from above—even though that wasn’t at all my intention, plus I explicitly critiqued cultural feminism in my book.
When I first saw the terms “transmisogyny affected” (TMA) and “transmisogyny exempt” (TME), I thought they were potentially useful nonbinary and non-identity-based ways of discussing the phenomenon. ... if you mistakenly presume that “transmisogyny” = “only trans female/feminine people experience misogyny,” then “transmisogyny exempt” will likely strike you as a doubling down on argument #2.
The only way out of this, as far as I can see, is for us as a trans community to explicitly (and loudly) reject cultural feminism—both its essentialism and its zero-sum conceptualization of gender-based oppression. If we did this, then we could all openly discuss our experiences with oppositional and traditional sexism (and the intersection thereof) without other trans people presuming that we’re implying that they have not been impacted by these forces—or worse, that they must be one of our “oppressors.”

If you think "transmisogyny" is something only trans feminine people experience, then you do not understand intersectionality. Transmisogyny is an intersection. It is a word designed to describe the way transphobia and misogyny affect trans people. It is not a cudgel to dismiss the experiences of trans masculine people. Trans masculine people experience trans misogyny.

Recommend the Write Me Dirty podcast to everyone but i think ESPECIALLY if you're struggling with writing smut. Like, yeah, it tends to skew hetero but the vibes are great. Katherine Ryan gives really gentle feedback and the balance of humor and legitimate writing joy is honestly inspiring.
For example, i would call Ally and Lou "bit enforcers." If they get ahold of a bit that they like, it's going to be everyone's life for the forseeable future. No one can rein them in. The bit is king and they are its enforcers. And I love that for them. I love that it brings them joy. For me, it can get boring real fast.
I'm more Brennan's speed. During an Adventuring Academy with Zac, Brennan talked about "edit while they're killing." Basically, let the bit end at its peak and move on instead of letting it go and go until there's nothing left. That style is way more satisfying to me.
I also really appreciate Emily's "bit gardening." I've seen Emily move along when the bit is no longer hitting and I love to see that balance because she can also go hard on a bit. Emily has such a unique comedic mind I feel like she often takes bits way off the beaten path, ignores the low hanging fruit for something really special. Bit gardener.
Anyway, not everyone's comedy style hits the same for everyone and I think as a fandom it would solve a lot of our problems if we can make our peace with that.
Hey @stonefemmesiren what the fuck? How about we don't encourage harassment against trans women just for writing poetry you don't personally connect with? How is expressing joy about queer sex worthy of dragging in front of the public square? This is such weak, cowardly, transmisogynist behavior. You should be embarrassed; saying nothing of defending any content of the poetry itself, to see someone expressing the "wrong" feelings about being queer and needing your followers to target them.
If a trans woman expressed a different opinion on a cartoon you like should we make sure they lose their job? If she enjoys sex differently to you should we make sure she can't have open her phone without a hundred losers telling her to kill herself? If she writes poems in a different meter than you'd prefer, should we make sure she becomes homeless? Think of the fucking strikes already against every single queer person, why is this callout needed? You cannot pretend in 2025 that a public callout against a trans woman, highlighting her a "degenerate pervert" is anything less than a call for continued harassment and violence towards her. What fucking harm has she done? Why does this trans woman need to be followed and marked for disposal for writing about how she fisted another butch dyke and felt the acceptance and love of God in a way that doesn't specifically appeal to you?
Critique her poem, if you're gonna. Comment on the allusions and metaphors if you think it needs improvement. Discuss the imagery and the contrast of blasphemy and religiosity. Fucking criticize using cowboy to sum up an aesthetic, don't just point and laugh like a confused child encountering something novel or challenging.
Have you not wanted to be held, despite your flaws, and accepted? Have you lost God's love for being a faggot and found it inside another? If you've had that, maybe you wouldn't be so eager to unperson someone for making art you couldn't understand. Do better or shut up but leave trans artists and poets alone.
