d20 zine jam 2026 is out and i had the pleasure to run stitchmension 20 for a Third time !!!!

like, even in the context of her being like “maybe i actually am just a vampire” and then getting the reveal, it seems like that thought comes from the people around her thinking (and thus treating her like) she’s just a vampire in denial rather than her actually believing it. especially given she’s described as late teens/early twenties (at least according to the wiki), it makes sense that other people’s doubts is enough to influence her fragile sense of self

To me, the thing is, it is both. Physiologically speaking, we know she IS a vampire. Her heart does not beat. She has to drink blood to recover. The hit from Jack of the Pines turned her "mortal" again. So at that point, it's more ironic and therefore funny if she IS in fact half (were) bat. That choice is SO on brand for Brennan. I'd be curious if this was always part of Vesper's backstory or if Brennan really did just throw it in there at the end because it's deeply funny and also weirdly touching. It feels more on brand for Emily to lean into the comedy of "a vampire in denial," especially with her and Murph as this duo who thinks of themselves as "superheroes" despite the fact that they, you know, have to murder people to survive.

But also, we contain multitudes! Sometimes we can know in our bones who we are AND still be in denial about things. We can have genetic connections to people who essentially abandoned us and that can be both important and also irrelevant. Like the drama of Vesper's dad returning after she's lived a life without him is so like "adopted child searching for their bio parent" vibes. Like, you've survived this long without them, but you still want to know them.
