write it out in spanish if that's the filmmaker's vision! some lines should be translated and some should be transcribed. 0 should be waved away.
for real though, if you don't translate it, you should transcribe the original language. if a bilingual viewer can understand what they're saying just from listening, then a bilingual viewer who relies on subtitles should also be able to understand those lines.

we need fewer songs about falling in love and breaking up and MORE songs about famous disasters of the sea
Come to think of it, it really is insane that my entire country is burning alive and literally no one in the rest of the world cares. Thousands of Indians are dying every day from the heat, it's 45+ degrees in multiple areas, the government couldn't give two fucks, we're getting severe warnings and red alerts, and not a soul outside of South Asia is speaking about it because why would you ever care about brown people
please keep talking about how Becky from Maryland doesn't like the rising gas prices. It's clearly the more pressing issue.
USA folks, that is a consistent temperature range hitting 113°. Death Valley temperatures. In Banda, it hovered between 116°-118° (47°-48° C) for a week straight.
This has been happening all month with little to no international media attention. Here are a few organizations you can check out for resources or to support:
ActionAid India
SEEDS India
GlobalGiving
Raise India (Project Tapan)
Not to be a bitch but sometimes people engage with fiction in the most boring way possible, and nowhere is this clearer than in videogames. Like what you mean you hate a character just because they were kind of abrasive when speaking to the player character? "They were mean to me" and it didn't occur to you to wonder why? Like, what might their attitude toward you reveal about the world? About the social dynamics within it? About their own perspectives and backgrounds and personalities? Does it even occur you to ask? Would you only have liked them if they bowed to your presence and talked about how great you are? Like I'm sorry but you're so boring. How boring fiction would be if it cathered to you
"How often have you heard the argument that we have to slowly implement gender and racial equality in order to not "shock" society? Who is the "society" that people are talking about? I can guarantee that women would be able to handle equal pay or a harassment-free work environment right now, with no ramp-up. I'm certain that people of color would be able to deal with equal political representation and economic opportunity if they were made available today.
So for whose benefit do we need to go slowly? How can white men be our born leaders and at the same time so fragile that they cannot handle social progress?"

people suggesting earthsea as an alternative series about wizard school are really stretching it lmao
The thing that also gets me about this suggestion is it betrays an ignorance of the fact that after the success of the Elephant In The Room, there was an explosion of magic school books, many of them also by variously marginalized authors
If for some reason you encounter a child who has been offered That Book and you’re trying to replace SPECIFICALLY MAGIC SCHOOL as a setting with a lot of pull, two series I like are Adia Kelbara by Isi Hendrix and The Last-Hope School for Magical Delinquents by Nicki Pau Preto. And Rick Riordan Presents is an imprint with more examples of kids discovering they are magic, all by marginalized authors, than even the most voracious middle-schooler could probably consume in a year.
I know those lists of “instead of Her, read My Favorite Author” are like not even actually aimed at people providing books to children but idk. If an adult is still entrenched in Those Books I’m not sure offering them a different book is even gonna help at this point
As Americans stew over the looming risk of job-stealing AI and data centers in their back yards, the feds are raising the alarm about a new
Well just call me a violent anti-tech extremist then.
Its odd to me that this article frames anxieties about job loss as a leading cause of anti-tech protests even tho the text itself references ecodefense and anti-war groups and movements. Im no expert and maybe its just sample bias, but these sentiments (which have been perennial in usamerican history) seem to be a much larger driving force behind anti-tech actions.
I think the NYPD is right, in a way, that tech-sector actors are an increasing target of ire; and/but/also this spin is a propaganda tactic attempting to paint growing movements as unprecedented and backwards "neoluddites" rather than people who are pissed off about the same unresolved and worsening problems of climate collapse, socioeconomic oppression, colonialism, and imperialism that have inspired social movements throughout the entirety of living memory & before.
It also sets up cover for poisonous and abusive tech giant facilities who market themselves to municipalities and citizens as job-creators and specifically high-quality jobs. Sure, automation and reduction of labor costs are a big part of the discourse, but when these companies make their press releases about moving to podunk nowhere and hold their company-sponsored town halls, theyre pitching economic development and jobs jobs jobs. Regardless of how true those pitches are (and they rarely are), if you walk in thinking that the big issue is job loss and the nice man in the nice suit shows you numbers about how that wont be true, wouldnt you feel reassured?
The reason why this is so important to understand is the concept of economic hostages. The article im linking below describes this concept re: uranium mining on Navajo lands in the 2nd half of the 20th century (which is becoming as big an issue today as it was then and is closely tied into issues with data centers, which are increasingly invested in small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) which are like, even less safe, portable nuclear power plants). Toxic heavy industry gets local defendants by promising economic development (often but not always to impoverished communities) and thats just as true in the 2020s as it has been in any other decade, inter-bourgeoieoiseie promises of eliminating reliance on the working class be damned. Taking up the mantle of pro or anti tech is a bad rhetorical move that obfuscates the much older dynamics at play.
The goblin shark had only previously been seen when caught by fishermen and they died shortly afterward.
So this is what a Goblin Shark actually looks like…
I love it
I love brown nipples, I love happy trails, I love hairy forearms, I love hairy armpits, I love hairy bush, I love big areolas, I love stretch marks, I love big noses, I love thick eyebrows, I could go on and on. Free yourself from overly curated (and often times white cis heteronormative) erotica

With the 250th anniversary it's likely to be especially bad this year!

Live-action comedy short film about a wildlife researcher's repeated, increasingly cartoonish failed attempts to tag members of a particular rare species for study, and their burgeoning paranoia that it's the same specific bird every time. There is no explicit textual confirmation whether they're correct.
You can really tell which people in the notes have worked with birds.
