Seeing a lot of people talking about the whole Pyroscythe and Milkberry boundaries situation and felt like saying my opinion here. Bc a lot of those people need to, in my opinion, touch grass. Honestly this is just as much to verbalise my thoughts somewhere as anything else.
TLDR: No, Pyro and Milkberry aren't entirely in the right. They're also not oppressing people, there is no panopticon, and they, as content creators, are allowed to say they don't want certain things in their community. Read on for nuance please. Also, Pyro has a literal boundaries doc pinned on their tumblr, so go read that before getting angry.
First of all, there is valid criticism of how they said things and their decisions, as even if they actively don't want people to be harassed by their fans, some fans are just gonna be like that. Additionally, fully banning people immediately isn't a very good idea as a universal, basic consequence in my opinion. So, I don't wholeheartedly think that Pyro and Milkberry's response is 100% the right thing. I'm also not boycotting them over it.
Just saying 'don't like, don't read' doesn't fully work when it's about the person you're saying it to. Asking your fans to please not make something involving a character you made in an MCYT rp series isn't Orwellian levels of censorship, or a panopticon as some people are calling it. That metaphor is blowing things way out of proportion. Because characters in MCYT often have a name that the person playing them is also often addressed by, and also often include a lot more personal attributes than other, more neutral characters do. Not to mention people who just literally make porn about real people who did not consent, and actively ask for that not to be done about their real life selves even if characters they play are fine. That's not nice.
It's not unreasonable for someone to look at art that makes them uncomfortable for those reasons and ask for it not to be made, and it is a request of respect for that art to no longer be made. The simple fact is that content creators are people. And yes, they should not completely control fan spaces, but someone saying that they don't want you to make art of them being romantic or having sex isn't some evil thing. They're not saying that art is morally bad, they're not saying you can't make it about other characters who are either based on people who are fine with that or are purely fictional characters. They just don't want that to be made about them specifically, which is not unreasonable. Shubble does a similar thing, according to a recent tumblr post (look it up if you want I don't feel like cross posting it here), that they block people who make sexual of them or their characters and remove those people from their community. For all those saying that what Pyro is doing will destroy their fanbase, I direct you towards exhibit Shubble, who is, from what I can tell, doing fine.
To be clear, I am also not saying that ship fanart is evil. Not even fics where rape is involved, you're not evil for making that. I wouldn't read it, sure, but that's a matter of personal taste, not morality.
Also, 'shipping boundaries' are often used in the MCYT space as 'guidelines/rules for the art I can make about you'. When someone asks for a creator's shipping boundaries, they're not asking for the creator to tell them what tags they personally avoid. There is very little point in asking about that, and if anyone means that when they ask that question, then they are in the vast minority. They are asking what the rules are. Even if there's no punishment for breaking those rules, or any real way of enforcement. Because some people want to make sure that the art they make about a person they call themselves a fan of wouldn't be something that that person wouldn't want to exist about them specifically. As a person who has done a small amount of linguistic study, that's how language works. The use decides the meaning, not the other way around. So no, Pyro and Milkberry are not using manipulative language. They are using the term 'shipping boundaries' the way a lot of other people in the MCYT space do, which means it is a common meaning of that word in the MCYT space, even if it's not listed on Wikipedia.
It's not like creators setting other rules is seen as so sinful. When Legs says, point blank, 'if you're transphobic, then there's the door', that's pretty much the same thing. If you do x (in this case, x is transphobic behaviour), then you are not welcome here. It's not that far off for Pyro to say if you do x (x meaning shipping me or my characters), then I don't want you in my community. And it's fine not to like that. But them's the breaks, and please don't act like someone setting a rule you don't want to follow is a moral sin. And yes, those rules are stopping two very different things. I'm not saying that making fanart and being transphobic are the same. I'm saying that Legs and Pyro's actions are very similar, but only one of them is criticised, and it's the one that stops shippers from shipping.
There's freedom of expression, which I wholeheartedly support, but I do not support freedom from consequences. Especially not when those consequences have been very clearly explained, even if I can also think that those consequences are more harsh than I would personally set. I also support the idea of being kind to people, and doing something that someone has said hurts their feelings is not kind in the slightest.
Admittedly, as an AroAce person who doesn't have nearly as much of a horse in the whole shipping race, my opinion on this is probably a bit skewed. But, in my opinion, if you hear the words 'please stop shipping me' and think that you can't make any art about that person or their rp characters at all, then that's kind of sad. There is so much wonderful art that can be made without shipping, and if you can't see beyond that, then that is unfortunate for you. But even if you can't see beyond shipping, that's still no excuse. Because you have so many other options. Ship a different character, there are so many to choose from. I believe that we should all try to be kind, and in this instance, the kind thing is to be nice and to not do things that you know would make someone who has made something that you clearly enjoyed a lot very uncomfortable if they knew that you were doing it.
Finally, you are not oppressed. You are not in a police state. You are not in a panopticon, which is not only a place where observation is incredibly easy and done to restrict behaviour, but a literal prison design. You are not in prison. Please remember you are not in prison before you say that Pyro is turning their fandom into a panopticon. Pyro is not trying to turn their community into the gestapo, some of their fans are just assholes who will harass people for doing something they see as deserving it. Most of their fans aren't going to become dogged hunters in the course of a single discord message, and the ones who would would probably be doing it even if Pyro had only said 'please stop shipping me, good night'. Should Pyro have been more mindful about that before setting those rules? Yes. Does it mean that Pyro and Milkberry are the second coming of Avid and Marm, or whatever other MCYT horror story you want to compare them to? Fucking no it doesn't.
I REALLY try to not get âpoliticalâ on my main accounts, but this is REALLY important.
why can rockstar games institutionalise you for life like nikita kruschev for being autistic
He didn't steal 10 million dollars. They made that number up as a loss, they never fucking had it. Rockstar has spent more than a billion fucking dollars on GTA VI and will likely make billions more when it gets released.
Uber is a fucking shell game of a company designed to leech investor capital and output bootleg cabs.
Nvidia posted a profit in 2023 of $4.37 billion. This is like someone stealing less than a penny from me.
And they lock this kid in a prison hospital for LIFE?
Capitalism is disgusting.
Nobody should buy GTA til they free Arion Kurtaj
What with GTA VI going up for pre-order i'd just like to remind everyone that rockstar conspired with the UK government to lock an 18-year-old away for life for hacking them.
The Fanfic Authorâs Guide to Metatext
(As Used on Ao3) by Eiiri
Also available as a PDF here. This thing is 13,000 words. Â The PDF is recommended.
Intro: What is Metatext?
Metatext is everything we fanfic authors post along with our story that is not the story itself: title, tags, summary, authorâs notes, even the rating.
It is how we communicate to potential readers what theyâre signing themselves up for if they choose to read our story, how we let them make informed decisions regarding which fics they want to read, how we get their interest and, frequently, how they find our story in the first place. A lot of metatext acts as a consent mechanism for readers, itâs the informed part of informed consent.
Since most of us who write fanfic also read it, we understand how important this is! But, for the most part, no one ever teaches us how to use metatext; we have to pick it up by osmosis. That makes it hard to learn how to use it well, we all suck at it when we first start out, and some of us may go years without learning particular conventions that seem obvious to others in our community. This creates frustration for everybody.
Enter this guide!
This is meant to be a sort of handbook for fic writers, particularly those of us who post on Archive of Our Own, laying out and explaining the established metatext conventions already in use in our community so we (and our readers!) are all on the same page. It will also provide some best-practices tips.
The point is to give all of us the tools to communicate with our audience as clearly and effectively as possible, so the people who want to read a story like ours can find it and recognize it as what theyâre looking for, those who donât want to read a story like ours can easily tell itâs not their cup of tea and avoid it, nobody gets hurt, and everybody has funâincluding us!
Now that we know what weâre talking about, letâs get on with the guide! The following content sections appear in the order one is expected to provide each kind of metatext when posting a fic on Ao3, but firstâŚ.

Human relationships are not transactional but they are reciprocal, which I think many of you with your âi donât owe anyone anythingâ shtick are too happy to forget
Transactional: everything has to be exactly 50/50 all the time, pay me back for the ÂŁ5 sandwich or buy me something worth exactly ÂŁ5, I refuse to make an effort for you if thereâs nothing in it for me
Reciprocal: you were there for me when I needed help, and Iâm going to do the same for you, it doesnât matter if one of us needs more or is capable of less, because the point is not equivalent exchange but mutual care
Hey so if I decided to say, "I'm homophobia affected because I'm a lesbian. These bisexual people are homophobia exempt." And then started saying stuff about "we should murder all homophobia exempt people!" While very clearly talking about bisexuals, that would be bad and detestable, right?
Then when bisexuals spoke up and were like "hey we actually do experience homophobia because we are often perceived as queer. Also I'm really uncomfortable with how I'm being treated in my own community" but I responded by spouting statistics about corrective rape and violence against lesbians (despite the fact they never denied the suffering of lesbians), while ignoring their actual objection, we could agree that would be a horrible and biphobic thing to do?
Cool, then can we stop doing it to trans men?
⌠Okay. Leaving aside the ritual for a second. Just looking at the play. At the intention of the play, before all the magic and Thjaziâs manipulations were added on top. Looking at Halâs intentions for the play.
Brennan: You see that Lash, as Vokjan, calls out: âYou will see! All of you will see! One day you will look to the top of the hill, and no longer will Azgra be there. No more will his visage tower over us! You cannot see it, but I can!â He calls, with his eyes cut out of his head. âLook, and tell me. Do your eyes not see a free world, breaking, just beyond the horizon? Look! Look!â
And he points out, and everyone seems to turn to look to see where heâs pointing, knowing that, at the top of the city of Dol Makjar, is where Azgra used to sit, and thereâs a moment where this is going to be kind of like an enjoyable moment of being, like, âoh yeah, Azgra doesnât sit there anymoreâ. And they turn and look up into the city, and see the lights of the Villa Aurora, so bright, and the Grey Tower, its lights dimmed, and bright lights celebrating the Photarchâs resurrection, meaning that, at the very top of Dol Makjar, the brightest thing they see are the flags of the Sundered Houses.
The feeling that settles over the crowd in this moment is a deep, stomach-turning confusion, that settles into something more like rage. What is sitting at the top of this city?
As they turn, Lashâs last line. âYouâll see. One day.â
So, uh? So that was a bit âŚ
Iâm now shocked that Yanessa didnât try to get this play shut down a lot sooner. Even before Hal decides fuck subtlety at the end and openly puts not only the Falconâs Cry over the end, but also a direct verbal attack on the Creed. But. Even before that. Like, theyâve been monitoring the progress of this play. The only reason itâs not openly seditious is because the Sundered Houses do not technically rule the city, and thus itâs not technically sedition.
But. But I guess âŚ
See, the thing is? Without the specific context of the Hallowed Round, itâs physical position and symbolism within the city âŚ
The play on its own, while dangerous, can still be glossed as a historical work. The choice of what history to present is still dangerous, and still rather specifically pro-rungjani and anti-religious, but that also ⌠This is the birthing place of the Shapers War, barely 70 years out. The Candescent Creed canât really say not to do it. Itâs Rungjani history, and religion has been dramatically out of vogue for seven decades now. Owing to, you know. The global decision to kill the gods.
It's the Hallowed Round itself that makes the difference. That visual symbolism, set up by Azgra, that finally frames the Sundered Houses within Azgraâs seat for its audience. Itâs a very specific location and cultural context that allows that visual correlation. Itâs a very Rungjani context.
And Iâm wondering if Yanessa, Halovar, the Sundered Houses, just didnât have that context in time to realise the true danger?
Because they are, after all, a foreign power. A colonial invader. They went to the top of the city, because of course they went to the top. Theyâre nobles. Power rises. To an extent, thatâs the image they genuinely wanted to portray.
Itâs just. Viewed from the Hallowed Round. The Dithyramb of Azgra itself. That image takes on a different meaning in context. One that Iâm not sure the Sundered Houses actually understood.
Also, just. Sidenote. Look at Liamâs face during Lashâs speech as Vokjan:
Thereâs a man full of wild, giddy emotion at his work coming to life, and at the same time an underlying dead seriousness. This is a work that was done on purpose.
Look at his face.

I want to boost everything this person has said and add on.
The reason I call myself a tomboy now, despite it being seen as a childish word and having had someone swear at me over it because âtHeReâS nO suCh thInG as BoY thInGs anD giRL thIngS sHut uPâ is because I couldnât call myself that or be like that when I was a kid. It was seen as a negative thing and I was already bullied enough. âLooking like a boyâ was the worst thing that could happen to a girl.
And Iâm not even 26 yet. We arenât talking 30+ years ago, we are talking 2000s and even 2010s. Itâs only since trans people have become more accepted in the past few years that gender nonconformity has too.
And the people who helped me accept my gender nonconformity more than anyone else? Were trans people. They taught me, âthereâs nothing wrong with how you feel. Youâre still a valid woman no matter what you wear, how you have your hair or what youâre into â¤ď¸â
And donât even get me started on how people treat gender nonconforming men. JK Rowling has a lot of nerve to be like âuwu boys can wear dresses and only us gendercrits accept that!â when she has, even in recent works, made femininity in men a negative trait, as well as making masculinity in women a negative trait also.
A lot of people still donât accept gnc people even now. Just last year I had someone tell me theyâd never let their daughter âdress like a boyâ, and Iâm always terrified to walk into a bathroom in case the next JK Rowling is in there, sees my gender expression and pepper sprays me or worse.
âThereâs no such thing as boy things and girl things.â I donât need to be told that and Iâm sure 99% of trans people also donât need to be told that. Tell that to the society that hates us both instead of actively encouraging that hate.
Gonna point out the og tweet thread is now full of terfs saying that life was better for gay people in the fucking 80s, that it was super easy for them to be a tomboy in the 70s and 80s and therefore it must have been that way for everyone, and that it was totally acceptable to be a gnc gay person in the 80s! đ¤Ş
Theyâre rewriting history as we speak to try to argue trans acceptance is making it harder to be gay and gnc for youth than it was to be gay in the 80s. This is a blatant lie.
The fucking 80s??? As in, âaids crisisâ 80s?? As in, âthe government actively avoided funding research to help gay peopleâ 80s????
Man I knew terfism was brain rot but I didnât think it was this bad.

This is an excellent read.
I just went looking for the post on X and got a message that it didn't exist
I searched for Guri Singh and got search results showing his account existed, but when I clicked on it I got a message his account did not exist Does anyone know if he made his account private or if he got nuked by Elon? Or do I just suck at X (because I never go there)?
Yup, the tweet is unavailable because the account has been suspended.
It doesn't look like Wayback Machine has a copy, either.
