learning that constantly thinking about and analyzing and interpreting my traumas isn’t actually healing . and don’t get me wrong its made me a very effective communicator and emotionally intelligent person. but actually im supposed to be moving on and experiencing new things and happiness and stuff and not just compulsively reliving and recontextualizing the past. oops!
Best therapist I ever had helped me unpack my trauma and then, crucially, helped me pack it away again
Except this time it's all correctly labeled so when I start experiencing issues related to them I'm not just drowning in undefined pain.
I'm like: "ah shit the Childhood Neglect container is leaking all over everything! I better mop it up and put it in a new container"
And sometimes something comes up and I'm like: "ah. This belongs in the religious trauma box. Let me put it away and then I can do art until I feel better"
You unpack your trauma to organise it and correctly label it do you know how to handle it. But you still pack it away so you can live your actual life

if you feel Represented by the status quo of the story then obviously the status quo cannot be allowed to move so much as a single inch from that point. the purpose of characters in a story is actually for them to slide one by one - as if like the pins in a lock - into position as Representations of you and all of your close personal friends until everybody is represented and the story no longer needs continue. at which point the lock will click and the door will swing open to reveal something so so beautiful and comfortable and unchallenging that it won't bring tears to your eyes or even indeed illicit an emotional reaction from you at all

Any news from the other provinces?

Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”
Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.

1. I will always find it weird for an adult to think a child is being "manipulative" because a child quite literally doesn't have the brain development to understand what manipulation is or why they shouldn't be manipulative.
2. Yes, Disabled adults *can* be manipulative, as any adult can be. However, I think it's important to realize that Disabled people are somewhat set up to be strategic in order to get needs met. This can essentially train us to lean into manipulative behaviors. Direct and clear communication is often not only inconsistent, but we are also at high risk if it fails. This means that we can be placed in a similar state of vulnerability as children, where we simply have to be strategic to survive (or at least that is the instinct).
im realizing very fast that people do not in fact know that sometimes things in stories suck on purpose and it sucking is the point
"this story is misogynistic!!"
>looks inside
>about the pressures of societal misogyny and how its bad
maybe next year instead of amateur fireworks on every block for hours and hours we can try holding up a single beautiful flower
A tenured professor at UCI University, Dr Tiffany Willoughby-Herard speaking during her arrest for protesting the war on Gaza last night made stark observations about where tax payers money is going as she stood by her students as they protested against their university’s complicity in Israel’s genocide on Gaza, demanding divestment. They were confronted with law enforcement aggression and arrests.
On May 15, 2024, several hundred heavily armed police were called in to break up a peaceful encampment at UC Irvine in solidarity with the p
She showed up for her students now I’m asking you to show up for Dr. Willoughby Herard. This is the professor I researched under during postgrad, who guided me to precolonial African gender and family structures and an impactful researcher of Black and World history in her own right. There is no way to meet her and speak with her and not find yourself wanting to do more and to be more. Pls also understand that UCI loves to play hard but crumbles when the repression and censorship it attempts rises to an external level, the Orange Curtain (oc) loves its veil of supremacy. Pls sign and share with others who move for a truly and fully free Palestine and for the global liberation of all Black ppl

i don't really want to weight in on the "using big words in your writing is ableist" discourse happening on tiktok because i'm like 90% certain it's an anti-intellectual psyop to stir up drama in online circles to promote the use of ai to summarize literally everything and thus feeding the LLMs and lowering the populace's mistrust of such tools but i also have to say: dictionaries and thesauruses are the most accessible they've ever been. if you use an e-reader of any kind you can look up a word without leaving the page. there's a plethora of online dictionaries and if you just type a word + "meaning" into google it'll usually give you a definition. we used to have pocket dictionaries we used when reading in class. i have two on my shelf right now that i used in high school. stop letting the fascists purposefully misuse anti-ableism rhetoric to trick you into never thinking again.
